Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Signature
My mother stared at Laura Mercer's signature as though it were a ghost.
“That isn't possible,” she whispered.
Agent Brooks leaned closer to the screen.
“Why?””
“Because Laura died before this document was signed.””
Grant shook his head.
“She didn't.””
My mother looked at him.
“You knew?””
“I knew she disappeared.””
“That isn't the same thing.””
Grant pointed at the date.
“Look.””
I did.
The signature had been dated six days before my father's death.
My mother covered her mouth.
“She was alive.””
Marcus stepped toward the computer.
“Then why did everyone believe she was dead?””
Grant answered quietly.
“Because Richard wanted everyone to.””
I looked at him.
“You said she died.””
“I said that's what I was told.””
“By whom?””
“Richard.””
The room went silent.
Agent Brooks turned toward me.
“Elena, we need to consider the possibility that Laura Mercer is alive.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I saw her body.””
Everyone looked at her.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“You saw Laura's body?””
My mother nodded slowly.
“The night before I disappeared.””
She looked at Grant.
“Richard showed me what he claimed was her body.””
Grant's expression hardened.
“Did you see her face?””
“No.””
“Then you didn't know.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was terrified.””
I looked at Marcus.
“You knew about this too?””
He hesitated.
“I knew there had been questions about Laura's death.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course you did.””
Marcus flinched.
“I'm sorry.””
I didn't answer.
My attention returned to the computer.
There was one more file on the screen.
A folder labeled:
*LM-07*
I clicked it.
A video opened.
The picture was grainy.
Black-and-white.
A warehouse.
A woman sat in a metal chair with her hands tied.
Her hair was dark.
Her face was bruised.
But even through the terrible quality, I knew her.
Laura Mercer.
Grant stepped forward.
“Mom.””
The woman lifted her head.
She looked directly at the camera.
“My name is Laura Mercer.””
Her voice shook.
“If you're seeing this, Daniel is probably dead.””
My father appeared in the corner of the frame.
“Laura, they can trace this.””
“I know.””
“This was a mistake.””
“No,” she said.
“The mistake was trusting Richard.””
Grant stared at the screen.
Laura continued.
“Richard believes the money is the important part.””
She gave a tired smile.
“It isn't.””
My mother whispered, “Then what is?””
The video cut.
A second recording began.
Laura was in a different room.
This time, someone stood behind her.
Richard.
He placed a document on the table.
“Sign it.””
Laura laughed.
“No.””
“You'll sign.””
“You killed Daniel.””
Richard didn't deny it.
“I gave him a choice.””
“He chose his daughter.””
Richard leaned closer.
“He always did.””
The video froze.
I stared at the screen.
My mother was shaking.
“What choice?””
Agent Brooks looked at Grant.
Grant looked sick.
“I don't know.””
My mother suddenly whispered, “I do.””
Everyone turned.
She walked toward the desk.
“Daniel told me.””
“Told you what?””
“That Richard threatened Elena.””
My chest tightened.
“What kind of threat?””
My mother looked at me.
“He said that if Daniel went to the police, you would disappear.””
I felt cold.
“Me?””
“You were sixteen.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“He had people following her even then.””
My mother nodded.
“Daniel chose you.””
I stared at the screen.
The words from my father's letter echoed in my head.
*When the Whitmores come for you, let them. They will lead you to the truth.*
Suddenly, something clicked.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned toward me.
“Why did my father know October 7?””
Marcus frowned.
“I don't know.””
I opened the letter again.
The date was written at the bottom.
Six years ago.
Exactly six years ago.
I looked at Agent Brooks.
“Whoever created this evidence knew today would happen.””
“Or your father predicted it.””
“No.””
I pointed toward the documents.
“He didn't know I would marry Grant.””
Grant stared at me.
“I think he did.””
I looked at him.
“How?””
“Because the marriage agreement wasn't created after we met.””
He pointed toward the screen.
“It was created eighteen years ago.””
I looked at the date.
Eighteen years.
I was a child.
Grant was a child.
Our parents had already been planning something.
My stomach turned.
“They knew.””
Marcus whispered, “They were preparing for a merger.””
“Not a merger,” Agent Brooks said.
She zoomed in on the document.
“Look at the clause.””
I read it.
*Upon the lawful union of the designated heirs, all restricted assets will become accessible.*
Designated heirs.
I felt sick.
“They planned for us to marry before we even met.””
Grant nodded.
“And our fathers weren't the only ones.””
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?””
He pointed toward Laura's signature.
“She signed this agreement.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Grant looked at her.
“She did.””
“She hated Richard.””
“She did.””
“Then why would she agree?””
Grant's expression changed.
“Because she thought marrying us would save us.””
Silence.
I looked from him to my mother.
“What are you saying?””
“Laura knew Richard would eventually come after you,” Grant said.
“She believed that if the trust was transferred through us, the government could seize it.””
Agent Brooks narrowed her eyes.
“That would only work if the beneficiaries were legally connected.””
Grant nodded.
“Exactly.””
I stared at the marriage agreement.
It suddenly looked less like a weapon and more like a desperate plan.
My father and Laura had created a trap.
One that Richard thought he controlled.
But then something happened.
Something they hadn't predicted.
Grant and I actually fell in love.
I looked at him.
“Did your mother know?””
“Yes.””
“And she approved?””
Grant looked away.
“She begged me not to marry you.””
The answer surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because she knew what Richard would do.””
“Then why did you?””
“Because Richard threatened you.””
My breath caught.
“What did he threaten?””
Grant looked directly at me.
“He said if I refused, he would make sure you died the way your father did.””
The room went silent.
Grant swallowed.
“I thought marrying you was the only way I could keep you alive.””
I looked away.
That should have made me forgive him.
It didn't.
But it changed the shape of my anger.
“You still lied.””
“I know.””
“You still hit me.””
His face fell.
“I know.””
“You could have told me.””
“I was afraid.””
“For yourself?””
“For you.””
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I said, “You don't get credit for protecting me from a fire you helped build.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
Agent Brooks closed the laptop.
“We're not staying here.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard's arrest was too easy.””
Marcus nodded.
“I thought the same thing.””
Agent Brooks looked toward the windows.
“We've been tracking Whitmore accounts for months. Richard knows how to disappear.””
My mother suddenly turned.
“Where is Paige?””
Nobody answered.
She looked at me.
“Paige knows.””
“What?””
“Your father's files.””
“How?””
“She worked with Richard.””
My stomach tightened.
Agent Brooks pulled out her phone.
“I'll have someone locate her.””
Too late.
A phone rang from downstairs.
Everyone froze.
The sound echoed through the mansion.
One ring.
Then another.
Grant looked toward the door.
“Don't answer it.””
Agent Brooks motioned to one of the agents.
He ran downstairs.
A few seconds later, we heard him shout.
“Agent Brooks!””
She moved.
We followed.
The agent was standing in the foyer.
He was holding a phone.
“What happened?””
“It was left on the front table.””
He handed it to her.
A video was already playing.
Paige appeared on the screen.
Her face was pale.
Her makeup was smeared.
“Please,” she whispered.
She looked behind her.
“They know about the ledger.””
Agent Brooks stepped closer.
“Paige, where are you?””
Paige shook her head.
“I don't know.””
A man's voice came from somewhere behind her.
“Tell them.””
Paige cried.
“I don't know where she is.””
I stepped toward the phone.
“Who?””
Paige looked directly at me.
“Your mother.””
My mother's face went white.
The voice behind Paige spoke again.
“Come to the old Whitmore factory.””
Agent Brooks immediately said, “We're not doing that.””
Paige's eyes widened.
“He said if you don't come, she dies.””
The video cut.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then my mother whispered,
“I'm the bait.””
“No,” I said.
“You have to stay here.””
“I won't.””
“Elena.””
“My whole life, everyone has decided what happens to me.””
I looked at Agent Brooks.
“This time, I decide.””
Grant stepped forward.
“I'm coming.””
I looked at him.
“I didn't ask you to.””
“I know.””
He reached into his pocket.
Then he placed something in my hand.
My wedding ring.
I stared at it.
“You took this?””
“No.””
“Then how?””
“Richard dropped it.””
I looked at the ring.
There was something beneath the setting.
A tiny metal compartment.
Grant pressed the edge.
The diamond lifted.
Inside was a microchip.
My father's voice came through a tiny speaker.
“Elena, if you are hearing this, the plan worked.””
I froze.
My father's voice continued.
“Do not trust Richard.””
A pause.
“Do not trust Marcus.””
Marcus went completely still.
My mother gasped.
Then my father's voice said the words that shattered everything.
“And above all, do not trust the woman who raised Grant.””
I looked at my mother.
Then at Grant.
Then at Marcus.
May you like
Someone had lied again.
But this time, I didn't know who.
