Chapter 8: The Name He Buried
“I've been using a different name my entire life.””
Grant's words hung in the library.
Nobody moved.
My mother was the first to speak.
“What name?””
Grant looked at her.
“Ethan.””
I stared at him.
“Ethan what?””
“Ethan Mercer.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Marcus's expression changed.
“No.””
Grant looked at him.
“You know the name.””
Marcus shook his head slowly.
“That's impossible.””
Agent Brooks stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Grant rubbed a hand over his face.
“My birth certificate says Grant Richard Whitmore. That isn't the name I was given at birth.””
“Who gave it to you?”” I asked.
“My mother.””
“Why?””
He looked toward Meredith's empty chair, as though she were still sitting there.
“Because Richard wasn't supposed to know about me.””
My mother went pale.
“What are you talking about?””
Grant met her eyes.
“My mother wasn't Meredith.””
Silence.
The words landed harder than everything else.
I stared at him.
“Then who was she?””
“A woman named Laura Mercer.””
Agent Brooks frowned.
“The same Laura Mercer connected to Northstar Meridian?””
Grant nodded.
My stomach tightened.
The shell company.
One of the names from my father's records.
“She was one of the original directors,” Grant said.
Marcus's face had gone gray.
“Your mother was the financial architect.””
Grant nodded.
“She helped build the network.””
My mother whispered, “And Richard?””
“He used her.””
Grant's voice had become flat.
“When she tried to leave, he threatened her.””
“What happened to her?”” I asked.
“She's dead.””
The room went quiet again.
“How?””
“Officially? Overdose.””
“And unofficially?””
Grant looked at my mother.
“She was killed.””
My mother closed her eyes.
I couldn't stop staring at him.
“So Grant Whitmore doesn't exist.””
“He does now.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard created that identity for me.””
Agent Brooks crossed her arms.
“Why would he create a false identity for his own son?””
“Because I wasn't his son.””
Every face in the room changed.
Grant continued.
“My biological father was Daniel Vale.””
I stopped breathing.
My father.
My mother looked like she had been struck.
“No.””
Grant nodded.
“Daniel was my father.””
I looked between them.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
My mind refused to process it.
“You're telling me…”
“I'm your half-brother.””
The words tore through the room.
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Grant's eyes filled with tears.
“I didn't know at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Two years ago.””
I shook my head.
“Two years?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
His face crumpled.
“I didn't know how to tell you.””
“You didn't know how to tell me?””
My voice rose.
“You knew we were siblings.””
“No.””
He stepped toward me.
“Not exactly.””
“Then explain it.””
“My mother told me Daniel was my father when she was dying. She gave me documents. DNA results. Letters.””
He swallowed.
“She told me Richard had hidden me because Daniel had tried to expose him.””
I felt sick.
“You knew we shared a father.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me love you.””
He looked down.
“I was ordered to stay close to you before I knew.””
“That doesn't answer the question.””
“No.””
He met my eyes.
“It doesn't.””
My mother sat down heavily.
“My God.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew Daniel had another child?””
She covered her face.
“I knew there was someone.””
“Someone?””
“I didn't know it was Grant.””
“You knew my father had another family.””
She began to cry.
“I knew he had a son.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because your father made me promise.””
“Why?””
“Because Richard was looking for him.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My entire family has been keeping secrets from me.””
Agent Brooks interrupted.
“Then we have a bigger problem.””
Everyone looked at her.
She held up the black ledger.
“If Daniel was involved in the original operation and Laura Mercer designed the financial network, then Grant wasn't just planted near Elena.””
She looked at Grant.
“He was the last surviving connection to the original operation.””
Grant nodded.
“Yes.””
“And Richard knew.””
“Yes.””
“Which means Richard didn't marry Elena to gain control of the trust.””
Grant looked at me.
“He married you because he needed both of us.””
I frowned.
“Both of us?””
“Your shares gave him the legal authority to access Daniel's assets.””
Grant's face tightened.
“My identity gave him access to Laura's encrypted accounts.””
Marcus stepped toward the safe.
“Then the ledger isn't the real prize.””
Grant shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed toward one of the flash drives.
“That is.””
Agent Brooks picked it up.
“What is it?””
“The master decryption key.””
“For what?””
Grant looked at me.
“For every account my father stole.””
The words were barely spoken when the library door slammed shut.
Everyone turned.
One of the agents reached for his weapon.
“Who's there?””
No answer.
Agent Brooks moved toward the door.
She opened it.
The hallway was empty.
Then every light in the house went off.
Again.
A computer screen on the desk flickered to life.
A single line appeared.
*HELLO, ELENA.*
My stomach tightened.
Another line appeared.
*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES.*
Agent Brooks stepped toward the computer.
“Shut it down.””
“It isn't connected to the network,” Marcus said.
“Then how is it running?””
Grant stared at the screen.
“He doesn't need the network.””
“Who?””
Grant's face had gone white.
“My father.””
The screen changed.
A video began playing.
Richard appeared.
Not the man we had seen that morning.
This was a younger Richard.
Thirty years younger.
He sat in an office beside my father.
Laura Mercer stood behind them.
My father looked straight into the camera.
“If you're watching this, then I'm dead.””
My chest tightened.
His recorded voice filled the room.
“I need you to understand one thing. Richard will tell you I betrayed him.””
The video paused for a second.
Then continued.
“I did.””
Richard laughed in the recording.
“That isn't the whole truth, Danny.””
My father ignored him.
“The company was never built to make us rich.””
A file appeared on the screen.
Whitmore Holdings.
A government seal.
Agent Brooks whispered, “Oh my God.””
My father continued.
“It was created to trace illicit money moving through private corporations.””
Grant stared at the screen.
“Dad…”
My father kept speaking.
“Richard wanted control. Laura wanted protection. I wanted the truth.””
The video shifted.
A younger version of Richard leaned toward the camera.
“You're forgetting the girl.””
My father looked at him.
“What girl?””
Richard smiled.
“Your daughter.””
My blood turned cold.
My father went silent.
Richard continued.
“She's the leverage.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then another file opened automatically.
A scanned document appeared.
My name.
Grant's name.
A marriage agreement.
Not ours.
A corporate agreement.
Between Richard Whitmore and Grant.
The date was eighteen years old.
Agent Brooks stared at it.
“What the hell?””
Marcus moved closer.
Grant didn't move.
His eyes were fixed on the screen.
I read the final paragraph.
*Upon marriage to Elena Vale, Grant Whitmore will secure legal access to the Vale trust and assume full operational authority over all affiliated assets.*
My hands began to shake.
Grant whispered, “I never signed that.””
Richard's voice came from somewhere unseen.
“You didn't have to.””
We all turned.
The library door opened.
No one was standing there.
But a phone on the floor began ringing.
Agent Brooks picked it up.
The screen showed one word.
*DAD.*
Grant stared at it.
“Don't answer.””
Agent Brooks handed it to me.
“It's your decision.””
I looked at Grant.
He shook his head.
“Don't.””
I answered.
“Hello?””
Richard's voice came through.
Calm.
Almost amused.
“Congratulations, Elena.””
I said nothing.
“You finally found the truth.””
“You're under arrest.””
He laughed.
“Am I?””
Agent Brooks looked at the phone sharply.
Richard continued.
“You should ask your husband what happened to the last person who discovered everything.””
I looked at Grant.
He had gone pale.
“What happened?””
Grant didn't answer.
Richard laughed softly.
“Ask him about Laura.””
Grant's eyes closed.
I whispered, “What did you do?””
“I didn't kill her,” Grant said.
Richard interrupted.
“He watched.””
My stomach dropped.
Grant stared at the floor.
“He watched his mother die.””
Richard's voice continued.
“And now he gets to watch you lose everything.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Then my mother stood.
“Grant.””
He looked at her.
“Tell her.””
He shook his head.
“Tell me what?””
My mother walked toward him.
“Tell her what you saw in the hospital.””
Grant's eyes filled with tears.
“I couldn't save her.””
“That isn't what she asked.””
He looked at me.
“The night your father died, I saw Richard leave his room.””
My pulse raced.
“I followed him.””
“What happened?””
Grant swallowed.
“He went downstairs.””
“Where?””
“To the basement.””
I stared at him.
“What was he carrying?””
Grant's face went white.
“A bloodstained coat.””
The room fell silent.
“And he wasn't alone.””
“Who was with him?””
Grant looked directly into my eyes.
“Your mother.””
My mother gasped.
“I wasn't there.””
Grant shook his head.
“Not Caroline.””
He pointed toward the portrait of my father.
“Someone else.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
Grant whispered a name.
One I had never heard in my life.
Then Agent Brooks looked at the document on the screen and suddenly froze.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
She pointed at the bottom of the marriage agreement.
There was a signature.
Not Grant's.
Not Richard's.
Not my father's.
A woman's signature.
And beneath it was a date from the week before my father died.
My mother stepped closer.
The color drained from her face.
“That signature…”
“What?”” I asked.
She stared at it.
May you like
Then whispered,
“It's Laura Mercer's.””
