Chapter 7: The Raid
The first black SUV stopped so hard that gravel sprayed across the trees.
Two doors opened at once.
Three men stepped out wearing dark jackets marked with federal insignia.
A woman followed them, holding a file folder in one hand and a weapon in the other.
“Federal agents!”” she shouted.
“Everyone stay where you are!””
Richard Whitmore didn't move.
He simply held my wedding ring between two fingers.
Grant swore under his breath.
Marcus grabbed my shoulder.
“Don't say anything.””
The female agent looked toward him.
“Marcus Hale?””
He nodded.
“You're under protection.””
Marcus blinked.
“What?””
She approached quickly.
“My name is Agent Naomi Brooks. We've been investigating Whitmore Holdings for eight months.””
Richard laughed.
“Eight months?””
Agent Brooks turned toward him.
“Long enough.””
Richard's smile disappeared.
Two agents moved around him.
One took the gun from the man who had been standing beside him.
The other placed Richard's hands behind his back.
“Richard Whitmore,” Agent Brooks said, “you're being detained pending a federal investigation involving fraud, money laundering, bribery, and obstruction.””
Richard looked at me.
Not at the agents.
At me.
“You called them.””
I shook my head.
“I didn't.””
He looked at Grant.
“You did.””
Grant didn't answer.
Richard's expression darkened.
“You betrayed your family.””
Grant stared at him.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I stopped betraying her.””
Agent Brooks stepped between them.
“Mr. Whitmore, turn around.””
Richard obeyed.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not powerless.
But old.
He turned his head toward me.
“This isn't over.””
I said nothing.
One of the agents approached Marcus.
“Mr. Hale, we need to move you to a secure location.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not without Caroline and Elena.””
Agent Brooks looked at my mother.
Her expression changed.
“Caroline Vale?””
My mother nodded.
Agent Brooks stared at her for several seconds.
“You're alive.””
My mother gave a tired smile.
“Apparently.””
The agent lowered her weapon.
“We've been trying to find you for six years.””
“I know.””
“You should have contacted us.””
“I couldn't.””
Agent Brooks glanced at the house.
“Then we need to talk.””
“No.””
My mother looked at me.
“First, Elena needs to know everything.””
Agent Brooks hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“Fair.””
The agents escorted Richard toward the vehicles.
He passed Grant without looking at him.
For a moment, Grant seemed frozen.
Then Richard stopped.
“You'll regret this.””
Grant's voice was quiet.
“I already regret enough.””
Richard was taken away.
The moment the SUV disappeared down the road, I turned toward Grant.
He looked at me.
“What?””
I held out my hand.
“The key.””
He gave it to me.
I stared at it.
Small.
Brass.
Ordinary.
It didn't look like something capable of destroying an empire.
“Did you know the agents were coming?””
“No.””
“Did you call them?””
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Grant glanced at Marcus.
Marcus shook his head.
“Not me.””
Agent Brooks stepped closer.
“I did.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
She opened the file in her hand.
“Your father's attorney contacted us six weeks ago.””
“My father doesn't have an attorney.””
“He did.””
She pulled out a document.
A name was printed across the top.
*Jonathan Pierce.*
My heart tightened.
I knew that name.
My father had mentioned him once.
A private attorney.
A man who had supposedly retired after Dad's death.
“He's alive too?””
Agent Brooks nodded.
“He disappeared six years ago.””
My mother stared at the paper.
“Jonathan was supposed to protect the trust.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew about the trust?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Richard was watching every person connected to your father.””
“You could have warned me.””
“I tried.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone tried after the damage was done.””
My mother flinched.
I regretted it immediately.
But I was too tired to apologize.
Agent Brooks closed the file.
“We can continue this inside.””
I looked at the abandoned house.
“No.””
She frowned.
“I need to go back to the Whitmore estate.””
Grant immediately said, “Absolutely not.””
I turned to him.
“You don't get to decide where I go anymore.””
“I know.””
“Then stop acting like you do.””
He nodded.
“Fine.””
I looked at Agent Brooks.
“I need what's in that safe.””
Her expression sharpened.
“What safe?””
Grant answered.
“The library.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“We shouldn't involve federal agents until we know what's inside.””
Agent Brooks looked at him.
“You realize that's exactly why we are here.””
She opened her file.
“We've been building a case against Whitmore Holdings based on fragmented evidence. Your father left financial records we couldn't obtain legally.””
“Why not?””
“Because the original trust was sealed.””
My pulse quickened.
“And the beneficiary?””
She looked at me.
“You.””
I stared at her.
“Then why didn't anyone tell me?””
“Because if you had known sooner, Richard would have known.””
My mother whispered, “She was never safe.””
Agent Brooks nodded.
“No.””
She looked at Grant.
“Especially after she married him.””
Grant lowered his eyes.
I turned away.
My chest hurt.
I wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
But every time I looked at him, I remembered the way he had stepped in front of the gun.
I hated that I still cared.
Agent Brooks turned to her team.
“Secure the Whitmore estate.””
One of the agents spoke into his radio.
I looked at the trees.
Then at the house.
Then at the key in my palm.
“We're going back.””
Agent Brooks frowned.
“That's not necessary.””
“It is.””
“You don't know what's waiting there.””
“I do.””
I looked toward Grant.
“Someone who believes my wedding ring gives him control over me.””
Grant's expression tightened.
Richard had taken it.
That had been deliberate.
A message.
A threat.
Or maybe something worse.
I closed my hand around the key.
“My father left something behind.””
Agent Brooks nodded.
“Then we're coming with you.””
The Whitmore estate looked different when I returned.
It had only been a few hours.
But the place no longer felt enormous.
It felt hollow.
Federal vehicles lined the driveway.
Agents moved through the house carrying boxes.
Meredith was nowhere in sight.
Neither was Paige.
The front door stood open.
As I entered, I saw the breakfast table.
The plates were still there.
My chair.
Meredith's plate.
The place where I had left my wedding ring.
For a moment, I could see the morning again.
The slap.
The silence.
My decision.
I walked past it.
Marcus followed.
Agent Brooks stayed close.
Grant entered last.
He stopped near the dining room.
His eyes landed on the empty space beside Meredith's plate.
I kept walking.
The library was on the second floor.
We entered.
Everything looked untouched.
The massive fireplace occupied one wall.
Above it hung Richard Whitmore's portrait.
I stared at the painting.
“Take it down.””
An agent removed the portrait.
Behind it was a small metal panel.
Grant pointed.
“There.””
Marcus stepped toward it.
I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
The panel swung open.
Inside was a safe.
Agent Brooks crouched beside it.
“You have the combination?””
Grant nodded.
“Your father taught me.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“He wanted someone to know it.””
“And he chose you?””
“He thought I might still have a conscience.””
I looked away.
Grant entered the combination.
The safe door opened.
Inside were stacks of documents.
A black ledger.
Several flash drives.
Photographs.
And one sealed envelope.
My name was written across it.
Again.
I picked it up.
My father's handwriting.
My hands began to shake.
“Elena,” Marcus whispered.
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a single page.
I read it silently.
Then I stopped.
Agent Brooks noticed.
“What does it say?””
I couldn't speak.
Grant stepped closer.
I looked up at him.
“My father knew I would marry you.””
Grant's face went white.
“What?””
I held out the page.
He read it.
His eyes moved across the first paragraph.
Then the second.
He whispered, “No.””
Marcus took the letter.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“My father didn't just know Grant would marry me.””
I looked at Agent Brooks.
“He planned for it.””
Everyone went silent.
I turned the page over.
There was another message.
A final line.
*Elena, when the Whitmores come for you, let them. They will lead you to the truth.*
Beneath it was a date.
*October 7.*
Today's date.
My blood ran cold.
My father had written that date six years ago.
He had known this morning would happen.
He had known about my wedding.
He had known about Grant.
He had known I would find the safe.
Agent Brooks stared at the page.
“That's impossible.””
“No,” Marcus whispered.
“It means your father planned everything.””
My mother appeared in the doorway.
She looked at the letter.
Then at me.
Her face changed.
“What?””
She stepped into the library.
I handed her the page.
She read it.
Her hands started trembling.
Then she looked at the date.
“He knew.””
“Knew what?”” I asked.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Where the money came from.””
“What?””
She looked toward the ledger.
“Your father didn't build Whitmore Holdings with Richard.””
She swallowed.
“He built it with someone else.””
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
“The government.””
The room went silent.
Agent Brooks stared at her.
“What did you just say?””
My mother pointed toward the black ledger.
“That company was originally created as part of an undercover operation.””
I looked at Grant.
He looked as shocked as I felt.
My mother whispered,
“And Richard stole it.””
Before anyone could respond, one of the agents rushed into the room.
“Agent Brooks!””
She turned.
“What?””
“We found something in the basement.””
He held up a sealed plastic evidence bag.
Inside was my wedding ring.
The same ring Richard had taken.
My stomach dropped.
The agent continued.
“There was a note underneath it.””
Agent Brooks took the bag.
“What does it say?””
The agent looked at me.
“It says…”
He hesitated.
Then read:
“*Tell Elena the man she married is not the man she thinks he is.*”
I looked at Grant.
He didn't move.
Then he whispered something that made every person in the room turn toward him.
“He's right.””
May you like
He raised his eyes to mine.
“I've been using a different name my entire life.””
