Chapter 9: The Son Who Stood Beside Him

Nobody moved.

The silence was so complete that Tristan could hear the clock ticking on the wall.

Marcus Reed.

His head of security.

The man who had protected him for twenty years.

The man who had stood beside him at his wedding.

The man who had carried Maisie through the garden when she was a baby.

His son.

Tristan stared at him.

"Say that again.""

Marcus slowly removed his security badge.

"Hello, Father.""

Audrey stepped backward.

"No.""

Marcus looked at her.

"Yes.""

Tristan's voice dropped.

"How long have you known?""

Marcus shrugged.

"Since I was old enough to understand what the records meant.""

"How old are you?""

"Twenty-eight.""

Tristan shook his head.

"You're lying.""

Marcus reached into his jacket.

He removed a folded document and placed it on the desk.

The paper showed a birth record.

A boy born to Eleanor Vale and Tristan Vale on December eighteenth.

The child had been transferred to a private facility under the name Marcus Reed.

Tristan stared at the signature.

His father's.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Marcus laughed quietly.

"Would you have believed me?""

"You're my son.""

"Am I?""

Tristan stepped closer.

"Of course you are.""

Marcus shook his head.

"You never looked for me.""

"I didn't know you existed.""

"Exactly.""

The words cut deeper than Marcus probably intended.

Tristan looked at the document again.

"Did Eleanor know?""

Marcus nodded.

"She visited me twice.""

"When?""

"When I was six. And again when I was nine.""

Tristan's jaw tightened.

"Why didn't she bring you home?""

"Because your father threatened her. He told her that if she tried to take me away, he would have me declared medically unfit and permanently institutionalized.""

Tristan looked toward the door.

"Where is Margaret?""

"Safe.""

"What did you do to her?""

"Nothing.""

"Then why did she sound terrified?""

Marcus smiled faintly.

"Because she knows what I am.""

Tristan's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?""

Marcus walked toward the window.

"Your father built the system. Daniel managed it. Margaret protected it. Eleanor tried to stop it.""

He turned.

"And I inherited it.""

Audrey stared at him.

"You knew Noah was alive.""

Marcus nodded.

"You knew my mother was looking for him.""

"Yes.""

"And you let her die believing he was dead.""

Marcus's expression didn't change.

"Your mother was a witness. She knew too much.""

Audrey's face turned white.

"You could have helped her.""

"I could have.""

"Why didn't you?""

"Because she was not part of my family.""

Audrey slapped him.

The sound echoed through the office.

Marcus slowly turned his head back.

He touched his cheek.

Then he looked at her.

"That was unnecessary.""

Audrey's eyes filled.

"You stole twelve years from us.""

Marcus said nothing.

"You watched me work in this house. You watched me take care of Maisie. You knew who I was.""

"Yes.""

"You knew I was Noah's sister.""

"Yes.""

"And you let me believe he was dead.""

Marcus's voice remained calm.

"Because it was convenient.""

Tristan moved.

He grabbed Marcus by the collar and slammed him against the wall.

"You used me.""

Marcus didn't resist.

"I was following the arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

Marcus looked directly at him.

"The one your father created.""

Tristan tightened his grip.

"Tell me everything.""

Marcus smiled.

"Then you'll need to sit down.""

Twenty minutes later, the conference room was filled with documents.

Marcus sat at one end of the table.

Tristan stood opposite him.

Audrey remained near the door.

Noah had been brought back from the safe location and was standing beside her.

He looked at Marcus with undisguised hatred.

"You were there," Noah said.

Marcus nodded.

"At Northbridge?""

"Yes.""

"You knew what they did to me.""

"Yes.""

Noah clenched his fists.

"Then why did you help them?""

Marcus leaned back.

"Because they told me I was the legitimate heir.""

Tristan frowned.

"You're my son.""

"According to the original records, yes. But the system required more than biology. It required a legal identity.""

He tapped the papers.

"Your father wanted one child to inherit the family name and another to control the financial structure. Noah was supposed to become the legal heir of the foundation. I was supposed to become the heir of the Vale estate.""

Noah shook his head.

"So you let them take me.""

Marcus looked at him.

"I was a child.""

"So was I!""

For the first time, Marcus looked uncomfortable.

He lowered his eyes.

Noah continued.

"You had a family. I had a locked room.""

Marcus didn't respond.

Tristan picked up another document.

"What does Daniel want?""

Marcus smiled.

"Everything.""

"Explain.""

"The trust is worth thirty-eight million. The family estate is worth considerably more. But the real value is in the foundation.""

"What foundation?""

"Northbridge.""

Tristan stared at him.

Marcus continued.

"Your father used it to move money, identities, and assets through legitimate institutions. The children were not the business. They were the legal mechanism.""

Audrey felt sick.

"You're talking about children as if they're paperwork.""

Marcus looked at her.

"That's how my father taught us to see them.""

Tristan slammed his hand against the table.

"Enough.""

Marcus fell silent.

Tristan leaned forward.

"Where is Maisie?""

Marcus looked at him.

"Daniel has her.""

"Where?""

"The Winter House.""

Audrey stepped forward.

"Then take us there.""

Marcus shook his head.

"There's no point.""

"Why?""

"Because Daniel has already arranged the final transfer.""

Tristan's eyes narrowed.

"What transfer?""

Marcus opened another folder.

Inside was a new birth certificate.

The child's name was listed as Maisie Shaw.

Her mother was Veronica Shaw.

Her father was Daniel Shaw.

Audrey stared.

"They're trying to erase her.""

Marcus nodded.

"Once the documents are authenticated, Maisie will legally become Daniel's daughter under the new identity. The trust will be transferred to Veronica as her guardian.""

Tristan looked at the document.

"That will never happen.""

Marcus smiled.

"It already has.""

He slid another paper across the table.

A digital registration confirmation.

Time: 2:14 a.m.

Status: Approved.

Tristan's face went cold.

"How?""

Marcus looked at him.

"Your mother's credentials.""

Tristan picked up the document.

"Margaret?""

"She gave Daniel access before she realized what he intended.""

Noah stepped forward.

"You're lying. She wouldn't.""

Marcus looked at him.

"She already did.""

Audrey turned toward Tristan.

"Then we have to find Maisie now.""

Tristan nodded.

He looked at Marcus.

"You're coming with us.""

Marcus smiled.

"Of course.""

The Winter House stood behind an iron gate on a wooded property forty miles outside the city.

The building was larger than Audrey expected.

Its white stone exterior had been designed to resemble a private country residence.

But the windows were reinforced.

The doors were steel.

And the surrounding trees concealed several security cameras.

Tristan's convoy stopped at the gate.

Marcus stepped out.

"There's a service entrance on the eastern side.""

Tristan looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"I was raised here.""

Noah stared at the building.

"I remember the blue room.""

Audrey took his hand.

"Stay with me.""

They entered through the side door.

The hallway was silent.

Old photographs lined the walls.

Children standing in gardens.

Children holding toys.

Children smiling at birthday parties.

Every photograph had a number beneath it.

No names.

Audrey stopped in front of one.

A little boy stood beside a fountain.

He wore a blue sweater and held a stuffed dinosaur.

It was Noah.

The photograph was dated twelve years earlier.

Beneath it was a number.

*N-014.*

Noah touched the glass.

"I remember this day.""

Audrey looked at him.

"What happened?""

"I asked the man taking the picture when I could go home.""

His voice trembled.

"He told me I would go home when I stopped remembering my old family.""

Audrey squeezed his hand.

They continued down the corridor.

A child's voice came from behind a closed door.

"Daddy?""

Tristan froze.

Maisie.

He rushed forward.

"Maisie!""

The door opened.

Maisie stood inside.

Her little face was pale, but she was unharmed.

"Daddy!""

Tristan dropped to his knees and gathered her into his arms.

"Oh, sweetheart.""

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

"I knew you'd come.""

He pressed his face against her hair.

"I'll always come.""

Veronica stood beside the window.

She was holding a folder.

Daniel stood behind her.

"How touching," Daniel said.

Tristan rose slowly.

"Let her go.""

Veronica laughed.

"She's not yours anymore.""

Tristan looked at the documents.

"Those papers are forged.""

"Not anymore.""

Daniel held up his phone.

"The registration is complete.""

Tristan's jaw tightened.

"You're going to prison.""

Daniel smiled.

"That's unlikely.""

He looked toward Marcus.

"Well done.""

Audrey turned.

Marcus stood near the doorway.

He hadn't moved.

Daniel smiled wider.

"Your son has been very helpful.""

Tristan looked at Marcus.

"Is that true?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Daniel placed a hand on Veronica's shoulder.

"Marcus arranged the security shutdown. He gave us the access codes. He brought us here.""

Tristan's expression hardened.

"You betrayed your own family.""

Marcus looked at him.

"I never had one.""

Noah stepped forward.

"You had a sister and a brother.""

Marcus turned.

"I didn't know you.""

"You could have.""

Marcus's expression became cold.

"Enough.""

Daniel opened the folder.

"Now, Tristan, I need three signatures.""

He placed three documents on a table.

"Your resignation from the family business. Your consent to the guardianship transfer. And your acknowledgment that Maisie is no longer entitled to the Vale inheritance.""

Tristan stared at the papers.

"And if I refuse?""

Daniel glanced at Veronica.

She raised the pistol.

Maisie began crying.

Tristan looked at his daughter.

Then he looked at Audrey.

She was standing very still.

But something in her expression had changed.

She wasn't frightened anymore.

She was watching Marcus.

Watching his hands.

Watching the way he avoided looking at Maisie.

Audrey suddenly understood something.

Marcus had betrayed Tristan.

But he had also brought them here.

He had shown them the documents.

He had allowed them to reach Maisie.

Why?

Audrey took one step forward.

"Marcus.""

He looked at her.

"Don't.""

"You're not Daniel's son.""

Marcus's expression changed.

"Be quiet.""

Audrey continued.

"You're Eleanor's son. She came to see you when you were little. She kept your photograph. She wanted you home.""

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Stop.""

"You spent your whole life trying to become the heir your father wanted. But your mother loved you.""

For the first time, Marcus looked genuinely angry.

"You know nothing about her!""

Audrey nodded.

"You're right. I don't.""

She glanced at the documents.

"But I know what it feels like to lose your mother without being able to say goodbye.""

Marcus looked away.

Audrey continued.

"And I know what it's like to spend years believing someone you love is dead.""

Noah stepped beside her.

"We were all children, Marcus.""

Marcus's hands began to tremble.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"What is this?""

Marcus looked at him.

"Nothing.""

Daniel raised his voice.

"Get them under control.""

Marcus didn't move.

Veronica lifted her pistol.

"Marcus!""

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot rang through the building.

Maisie screamed.

Tristan threw himself over his daughter.

When the emergency lights came on, Daniel was standing near the table.

Veronica's gun lay on the floor.

And Marcus was holding a small black device.

He looked at Tristan.

"Take the girl.""

Tristan didn't hesitate.

He grabbed Maisie and ran toward Audrey.

Noah followed.

Daniel shouted.

"Marcus! What have you done?""

Marcus looked at him.

Then he answered quietly.

"Something my mother should have done twelve years ago.""

He pressed the device.

A heavy steel door slammed shut between them.

Daniel was trapped inside the main hall.

Tristan, Audrey, Noah, and Maisie escaped through the service corridor.

But as they reached the outside, Audrey noticed something in Tristan's hand.

A folded document.

He had taken it from the table.

She looked at it.

Then she stopped.

"Mr. Vale.""

Tristan turned.

"What?""

Audrey pointed to the bottom of the page.

The guardianship transfer had been approved.

But the signature wasn't Margaret's.

It wasn't Daniel's.

It was Tristan's.

A perfect copy.

Tristan stared at it.

Then he remembered something.

His private biometric authorization had been used earlier that evening.

Someone had access to his fingerprint and signature records.

He looked toward the burning lights of the Winter House.

Marcus had not merely helped Daniel.

He had stolen Tristan's identity.

And now, according to the official documents, Tristan Vale had voluntarily surrendered his daughter.

At 4:36 a.m., the convoy reached the estate.

Maisie was taken directly to her bedroom.

Dr. Morgan examined her and confirmed that she was physically safe.

Audrey stayed beside her.

Noah sat in the hallway, staring at his hands.

Tristan stood in his office, reading the forged documents.

Then Marcus's phone rang.

Tristan picked it up.

An unknown number appeared.

He answered.

"Marcus?""

A familiar voice replied.

"Not exactly.""

Tristan froze.

It was his father.

Richard Vale.

The man who had been dead for eleven years.

"Hello, son.""

Tristan slowly lowered himself into his chair.

"Who is this?""

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

"Someone who has been watching you make mistakes for a very long time.""

Tristan stared at the screen.

Then the voice spoke again.

"Now that you have found my children, it's time we discussed which one deserves to inherit my empire.""

The call ended.

May you like

And on Tristan's desk, a new message appeared.

*RICHARD VALE — ACTIVE.*
