Chapter 4: The Dead Woman's Signature
For several seconds, Tristan Vale couldn't speak.
He stood in the private conference room, holding his phone against his ear while the nurse repeated the same impossible statement.
Eleanor Vale.
His dead wife.
Her signature appeared on a document claiming that another man had parental rights over their daughter.
"Read it again," Tristan ordered.
The nurse sounded frightened.
"Mr. Vale, the document identifies Daniel Shaw as an authorized guardian of Maisie. It carries your wife's signature, along with a hospital certification dated three years ago.""
"Three years ago, Eleanor was dead.""
There was silence.
"Sir?""
"My wife died three years ago. I buried her. I watched them lower her coffin into the ground.""
The nurse swallowed audibly.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Vale. I'm only telling you what was presented to us.""
"Has Daniel taken my daughter?""
"No. We haven't released her records or allowed him access to the ward. But he demanded to speak with the hospital director.""
"Keep him there.""
"Mr. Vale, he left approximately ten minutes ago.""
Tristan closed his eyes.
"Where did he go?""
"We don't know.""
"Listen carefully. Nobody releases any information about my daughter. Nobody changes her medical records. If someone comes asking for her, you call me directly.""
"Understood.""
He ended the call.
Across the room, Audrey stood beside Marcus. Peter Collins was still sitting in the chair, his hands trembling.
Tristan slowly placed his phone on the table.
"Daniel Shaw has been using my dead wife's signature.""
Marcus frowned.
"That means the documents were prepared before tonight.""
"Or someone has been preparing them for years.""
Audrey stepped forward.
"Mr. Vale, can I see the document?""
Tristan looked at her.
"Why?""
"Because you said it was signed by Eleanor.""
He nodded to Marcus.
Marcus opened the hospital's secure email attachment on his tablet and placed it on the table.
Audrey leaned closer.
The document contained several paragraphs of legal language, two signatures, and a hospital seal.
She stared at the signature at the bottom.
Then she noticed something.
"That's not right.""
Tristan turned.
"What?""
Audrey pointed at the page.
"Mrs. Vale signed her name differently.""
Tristan frowned.
"How would you know?""
"I used to help organize the family correspondence before the wedding preparations. I handled some of her old stationery when the house was being renovated.""
She touched the screen.
"Look at the letter E. This signature has a loop at the bottom. The signatures on her Christmas cards didn't.""
Tristan stared at the document.
He remembered Eleanor's handwriting.
He remembered the way she signed birthday cards for Maisie, always adding a tiny heart above the final letter.
This signature had no heart.
No familiar flourish.
Nothing.
"Forgery," Marcus said.
"Probably," Tristan replied.
"But I want it proven.""
He turned toward Peter.
"Who gave Daniel access to Eleanor's records?""
Peter looked terrified.
"I don't know.""
Tristan leaned forward.
"Think carefully.""
"Veronica had a box of old documents. She said they belonged to her family.""
"What box?""
"Brown leather. It had a silver clasp.""
Tristan exchanged a glance with Marcus.
He knew exactly what Peter was describing.
Eleanor's private document case had disappeared six months after her funeral.
At the time, Tristan had assumed it had been packed away with her personal belongings.
"Where did Veronica keep it?""
"In her dressing room.""
Tristan stood.
"Marcus, search that room.""
Marcus immediately moved toward the door.
"And Peter?""
"Keep him here. Get a full statement. Nobody speaks to him without my authorization.""
Veronica's dressing room looked like a jewelry advertisement after a storm.
Broken glass covered the carpet. Perfume had spilled across the vanity, and one of the drawers had been pulled completely out.
Marcus entered with two security officers.
"Photograph everything.""
One officer began documenting the room.
Marcus opened the wardrobe.
Designer dresses hung in perfect rows. Beneath them sat three large storage boxes.
The first contained shoes.
The second contained old magazines and fashion accessories.
The third was locked.
Marcus examined it.
A silver clasp.
He called Tristan.
"Boss, I found something.""
"Open it.""
"We'll need a locksmith.""
"Break it.""
A minute later, the lid came off.
Inside were dozens of documents, old photographs, bank statements, and a small velvet pouch.
At the bottom lay a leather folder.
Marcus opened it.
The first page was Eleanor's last will.
The second was Maisie's birth certificate.
The third was a document titled:
*TEMPORARY CUSTODIAL AUTHORIZATION.*
Marcus read the first paragraph.
Then he stopped.
"Boss?""
"What?""
"You need to see this.""
Tristan arrived within minutes.
He took the document from Marcus.
The authorization was dated two weeks before Eleanor's death.
It supposedly granted Daniel Shaw temporary authority over Maisie's medical and financial affairs if Tristan became incapacitated.
Tristan read the page twice.
Then he looked at the signature.
It was convincing.
Too convincing.
"Who witnessed this?""
Marcus pointed to the bottom.
"Dr. Samuel Hayes.""
Tristan's eyes narrowed.
"Dr. Hayes?""
"The same doctor who examined Maisie tonight.""
For a moment, neither man spoke.
Then Tristan picked up the next document.
It was a bank transfer authorization.
The beneficiary was a company called Shaw Family Holdings.
The amount was thirty-eight million dollars.
Maisie's entire inheritance.
A handwritten note had been attached.
*Release upon verification of guardianship.*
Tristan placed the papers down.
"Get Dr. Hayes on the phone.""
Marcus dialed.
The call went to voicemail.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Tristan looked at the security officers.
"Find him.""
One of them nodded.
As they turned to leave, Marcus noticed a small envelope tucked beneath the velvet pouch.
It contained a photograph.
Eleanor was standing outside a hospital entrance, holding a newborn baby.
On the back was written:
*OCTOBER 14 — THE SECOND CHILD.*
Tristan stared at the date.
Maisie had been born in December.
He turned the photograph over again.
"Who is this baby?""
Marcus shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Tristan looked toward Audrey, who had followed him into the room.
She had been examining the documents silently.
Then she stepped closer.
"Can I see the photograph?""
Tristan handed it to her.
Audrey's fingers trembled.
She looked at Eleanor.
Then at the baby.
Then at the date.
"That's impossible.""
"What?"" Tristan asked.
Audrey swallowed.
"My brother was born on October fourteenth.""
Tristan looked at her.
"Your brother?""
"Yes.""
She pointed to the photograph.
"That's the same date on Noah's original birth record.""
The room fell silent.
Audrey looked at the baby again.
"Could this be him?""
Tristan studied her face.
"Your brother died at seven.""
"I know.""
"Are you saying he was connected to Eleanor?""
Audrey shook her head.
"I don't know what I'm saying.""
Her voice cracked.
"But I know one thing. The hospital told my mother Noah died before midnight. They gave her a death certificate. We buried a small coffin.""
She looked at the photograph.
"And now I find out Eleanor had a baby photographed on his birthday.""
Tristan picked up his phone.
"Marcus, I want the hospital records from twelve years ago. Every file connected to Audrey Lane and Noah Lane.""
Marcus nodded.
Then his phone vibrated.
He checked the message.
His expression changed.
"Boss.""
"What?""
"We found Dr. Hayes.""
"Where?""
"His apartment.""
"And?""
Marcus hesitated.
"He's dead.""
The silence in the room became unbearable.
Tristan looked at the documents.
The forged signature.
The stolen trust.
The photograph.
The dead doctor.
Everything was connected.
But the biggest question remained.
Why had someone gone to such lengths to make Daniel Shaw Maisie's legal guardian?
And why was Audrey's dead brother involved?
Tristan turned toward her.
"Audrey, I need you to tell me everything you remember about Noah's death.""
She looked down.
"I was thirteen. My mother was working two jobs. Noah had been admitted to St. Catherine's Children's Hospital after an accident.""
"What kind of accident?""
"He fell down the stairs at our apartment building. He hit his head.""
"Was he conscious?""
"Yes. He was talking when they took him away.""
Her voice grew quieter.
"He asked me to bring his blue dinosaur. I promised I would.""
Tristan listened without interrupting.
Audrey continued.
"When I arrived the next morning, my mother was crying. The hospital said he had suffered complications during surgery.""
"Did you see his body?""
Audrey's eyes filled.
"Yes.""
"Did you identify him?""
"No. My mother did.""
Tristan nodded slowly.
"Do you remember the doctor?""
"Dr. Hayes.""
The name seemed to strike the room like a gunshot.
Marcus looked up.
"Dr. Samuel Hayes?""
Audrey nodded.
"He was the doctor who told my mother Noah couldn't be saved.""
Tristan looked at Marcus.
The same doctor who had signed Eleanor's suspicious authorization.
The same doctor who had examined Maisie that night.
And now he was dead.
Audrey took a step backward.
"Mr. Vale, I think somebody has been lying about my brother for twelve years.""
Before Tristan could answer, a security officer rushed into the room.
"Boss! We've got a problem.""
"What now?""
The officer held up a tablet.
"Someone accessed the estate's private archive.""
Tristan's eyes narrowed.
"What did they take?""
The officer swallowed.
"All the recordings from the night Eleanor died.""
Tristan went completely still.
May you like
Because he had never told anyone that the final hours of his wife's life had been recorded.
And whoever had stolen those files knew exactly what they were looking for.
