Chapter 8: The Truth Buried Beneath Twelve Years

"MAISIE!""

Tristan's scream echoed through the chapel.

He scrambled toward the front pew.

The small chair was overturned.

The stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

Veronica was gone.

So was Daniel.

Audrey rushed toward the side entrance.

"Where is she?""

Noah grabbed her arm.

"Don't!""

"That's my niece!""

"They planned this!""

Tristan stood, his face pale with fury.

"Marcus!""

A security team flooded through the chapel doors.

Marcus rushed toward him.

"Boss!""

"Find my daughter!""

"Which direction?""

"Every direction!""

Marcus immediately began issuing orders.

Tristan picked up Maisie's stuffed rabbit.

One of its ears had torn loose.

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Then he looked toward Margaret.

She was sitting on the floor, one hand pressed against her chest.

"Mother.""

She looked up.

"Tristan—"

"Where is Veronica?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't know.""

"Where is Daniel?""

"I don't know.""

"Stop lying to me!""

His voice shook the windows.

Margaret flinched.

"I swear I don't know.""

Tristan crouched in front of her.

"Did you know what they planned to do to Maisie?""

Margaret began crying.

"I knew they wanted her inheritance.""

"That's not what I asked.""

She looked away.

"Yes.""

Tristan's expression became empty.

"You knew they were going to take my daughter?""

"I thought they would send her somewhere safe.""

"Safe?""

He held up the stuffed rabbit.

"She was locked in a basement. She was drugged. She was kidnapped from her bedroom. And you thought she would be safe?""

Margaret covered her mouth.

"I was trying to prevent something worse.""

"What could possibly be worse?""

She looked at him.

Then she whispered:

"Your father.""

Tristan went still.

"My father is dead.""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes. But his instructions were never destroyed.""

The security team searched the chapel.

Marcus found a small electronic device beneath the altar.

It was connected to the building's old surveillance system.

He handed it to Tristan.

"Boss, there's a recording.""

Tristan pressed play.

Static filled the device.

Then a familiar male voice emerged.

His father's voice.

"Margaret, if you're hearing this, it means Eleanor has discovered the arrangement.""

Tristan stared at the device.

The recording continued.

"Do not let her take the children. The Vale family cannot survive another scandal.""

A pause.

Then another voice.

Eleanor.

"Richard, they're children. You cannot keep doing this.""

His father replied.

"Everything I have done has been for this family.""

"Then you have destroyed it.""

The recording crackled.

Then Richard spoke again.

"If the girl becomes a problem, the guardianship must be transferred. Noah is the key. He was always supposed to be the legal heir.""

The recording ended.

Tristan lowered the device.

He looked at Margaret.

"Explain.""

She wiped her tears.

"Your father believed that the family fortune needed a direct heir. He was obsessed with the old bloodline. When Eleanor discovered that Noah was her biological son, she wanted to change the inheritance structure.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"Because she was afraid.""

"Of me?""

Margaret shook her head.

"Of what your father would do to you.""

Tristan laughed bitterly.

"My father was dead by then.""

"He had already built the system. Daniel was still running it. And I was helping him.""

Tristan stared at her.

"Why?""

Margaret's voice cracked.

"Because I thought it was the only way to protect you.""

Audrey stepped forward.

"Where does my mother fit into this?""

Margaret looked at her.

"Your mother worked at St. Catherine's. She was a nurse's assistant. She discovered that Noah had been transferred under another identity.""

Audrey froze.

"She knew?""

"Yes.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

"She was threatened. Daniel told her that if she spoke, she would lose both children.""

Audrey shook her head.

"My mother never said anything.""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"She was trying to keep you alive.""

Audrey's face crumpled.

"She died believing Noah was dead.""

Margaret nodded.

"I'm sorry.""

Audrey stepped closer.

"Don't apologize. Tell me where he was taken.""

Margaret looked at Noah.

"Northbridge.""

"We already know that," Tristan said.

Margaret shook her head.

"Not the building. The original facility.""

Marcus looked up.

"There was another location?""

Margaret nodded.

"A private property outside the city. Your father called it the Winter House.""

Tristan frowned.

"Where?""

Margaret reached into her leather case.

She removed a folded map.

On it was an address.

"Your father kept the children there before they were transferred to new identities.""

Noah stared at the map.

"I remember that place.""

Audrey turned.

"You do?""

He nodded slowly.

"There was a big garden. A fountain shaped like a swan. And a room with blue walls.""

He closed his eyes.

"I used to sit by the window and watch the road. I thought someone would come for me.""

Audrey took his hand.

"Someone is coming for you now.""

At 1:30 a.m., Marcus received a signal from the estate.

The emergency system had detected movement in the eastern wing.

He checked the screen.

Then he looked at Tristan.

"Boss.""

"What?""

"Someone entered your mother's old private office.""

Tristan frowned.

"Who?""

Marcus enlarged the image.

A woman was standing beside the desk.

She wore a black coat.

Her face was hidden beneath a hood.

But she turned toward the camera.

Audrey gasped.

"That's Veronica.""

Tristan grabbed his phone.

"Seal the estate.""

Marcus shook his head.

"Already done.""

"Then how did she get inside?""

Marcus stared at the screen.

"She didn't enter through the gate.""

He enlarged another camera feed.

The woman had emerged from a concealed passage behind the library.

Tristan stared.

His mother had known about the passage.

And so had Veronica.

"She's looking for something," Audrey said.

Tristan turned.

"What?""

Audrey pointed toward the desk.

The camera showed Veronica opening a drawer.

She removed a small black box.

Then she walked toward the wall and pressed a hidden switch.

A panel opened.

Inside was a safe.

She entered a code.

The safe opened.

She removed a document.

And then she looked directly into the camera.

She smiled.

The feed went black.

Tristan returned to the estate with Marcus and Audrey.

Noah remained under protection with two security officers.

The moment Tristan entered the library, he noticed the hidden passage.

It was open.

A trail of broken glass led toward the private office.

"She's still here," Marcus said.

Tristan drew his weapon.

"Spread out.""

They searched the room.

The black box was gone.

The safe stood open.

Inside lay a single photograph.

Tristan picked it up.

It showed Eleanor holding Maisie as a newborn.

On the back, she had written:

*My two miracles.*

Tristan turned the photograph over.

Something was written beneath the frame.

A date.

And a name.

*DECEMBER 18 — THE SECOND BIRTH.*

He frowned.

Maisie had been born on December twenty-second.

He examined the photograph again.

There were two hospital identification bracelets.

One belonged to Maisie.

The other belonged to a baby boy.

Tristan's blood ran cold.

"Marcus.""

"Yes, Boss?""

"Get me the original hospital birth records.""

Marcus looked at the photograph.

"Sir, I don't understand.""

Tristan pointed to the second bracelet.

"Because there were two babies.""

Audrey stood near the window.

She had spent the last hour trying to process everything.

Noah was alive.

Eleanor had known.

Margaret had helped conceal the truth.

And now there was evidence that Maisie might have had a twin brother.

She looked at Tristan.

"Could that be another mistake?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why would they hide it?""

Tristan examined the photograph.

"Because the second child may have been part of the same arrangement.""

Audrey shook her head.

"That's impossible.""

Tristan looked at her.

"I thought the same thing about Noah.""

She closed her eyes.

A voice came from the doorway.

"Mr. Vale?""

Marcus entered holding a folder.

"We recovered the original birth records.""

Tristan took them.

The first page confirmed Maisie's birth.

The second page contained another entry.

*MALE INFANT — BORN DECEMBER 18.*

Mother: Eleanor Vale.

Father: Tristan Vale.

Status: Transferred.

Tristan stared at the word.

"Transferred where?""

Marcus turned the page.

There was no destination.

Only a signature.

*RICHARD VALE.*

Tristan sat down.

For several seconds, he couldn't move.

He had a son.

A son he had never known existed.

Audrey approached.

"Mr. Vale?""

He handed her the document.

She read it.

Then she looked up.

"Does Noah know?""

Tristan shook his head.

"No.""

Before anyone could speak again, a phone rang.

It belonged to Margaret.

Tristan answered.

"Mother.""

Her voice was frantic.

"Tristan, listen to me. You need to get away from the estate.""

"Why?""

"Because I made a terrible mistake.""

"What did you do?""

"I gave Daniel the second child's location.""

Tristan stood.

"Where is he?""

Margaret began crying.

"I don't know.""

"Mother!""

She whispered:

"Your son is not at Northbridge.""

Tristan's face went pale.

"Then where?""

Margaret took a shaky breath.

"He's been living under another name.""

A pause.

Then she said:

"He's been working in your house.""

Tristan's eyes moved toward the open office door.

Audrey looked at him.

"What?""

Margaret whispered the name.

"Marcus.""

The phone slipped slightly in Tristan's hand.

He slowly turned.

The head of security stood in the doorway.

His expression was unreadable.

May you like

Then Marcus smiled.

"Hello, Father.""
