Chapter 6: The Test That Never Existed

I didn’t speak.

Neither did Daniel.

The message from Vanessa remained on my screen.

Ask Daniel who changed the paternity test results.

The restaurant suddenly felt too bright.

Too loud.

Too public.

I locked my phone and placed it face down.

“Explain.””

Daniel looked away.

“Marcus.””

“Explain.””

His jaw tightened.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You knew enough to be afraid.””

“That’s not fair.””

I almost laughed.

“Fair?””

My voice rose slightly.

The couple at the next table glanced over.

I didn’t care.

“My fiancée destroyed my daughter’s necklace. My dead wife left me a letter saying she betrayed me. And now I’m finding out someone changed a test result?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I didn’t change it.””

“Then who did?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You know.””

“I suspect.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vanessa.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stood.

“She wouldn’t.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

That scared me more.

Because the man across from me had spent years protecting Rachel’s memory.

And now he was telling me the woman I almost married had manipulated my entire life.

I sat back down.

“Start from the beginning.””

Daniel nodded.

“The hospital was chaotic that night.””

I listened.

“Rachel was exhausted. She was scared. She asked for a paternity test because she wanted certainty.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She was working there.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She was a medical assistant at the hospital.””

I remembered.

Vanessa had mentioned working in healthcare years ago.

She said she left because it was stressful.

I never questioned it.

“She had access to files?””

“Yes.””

“And the test?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“The first result was lost.””

“Lost?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Convenient.””

“I thought the same thing.””

“Then why didn’t you say anything?””

“Because Rachel begged me not to.””

I froze.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Vanessa threatened her.””

The air left my lungs.

“What?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with anger.

“She told Rachel that if she told you about the affair, she would make sure everyone knew.””

“Everyone?””

“She threatened to expose Rachel publicly.””

“For what?””

“For cheating.””

I stared.

Rachel had been dying.

Terrified.

And Vanessa had used that.

“She was blackmailing her.””

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because Vanessa wanted you.””

The words were almost impossible to process.

“She wanted me?””

“She had been interested in you for a long time.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She believed Rachel was the only thing standing between you and her.””

I thought about every conversation.

Every time Vanessa had been patient with my grief.

Every time she told me she understood.

Every time she said she admired the way I loved my late wife.

It had all looked different now.

Because maybe she wasn’t admiring it.

Maybe she was waiting for it to disappear.

“When did you find out?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Two years ago.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Two years ago?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I tried.””

“Try harder.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Vanessa had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Messages.””

My heart sank.

“Between Rachel and me.””

I looked away.

“And you were afraid.””

“Yes.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“You let her keep controlling everyone.””

“Yes.””

I stood again.

This time, I didn’t sit.

“You both failed Rachel.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know.””

“You both failed Ava.””

His face broke.

“I know.””

I walked toward the door.

I needed air.

I needed space.

I needed anything that didn’t feel like my entire past was collapsing.

Outside, my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I stared at her name.

Then answered.

“What?””

Her voice came immediately.

“You know now.””

I said nothing.

“You met Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“And he told you.””

“Yes.””

A shaky breath.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I almost laughed.

“This way?””

“Marcus—”

“You lied to me for years.””

“I protected you.””

“No.””

My voice became quiet.

“You protected yourself.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“I can prove Daniel is lying.””

I stopped walking.

“How?””

“I have the original hospital report.””

My heart pounded.

“What report?””

“The real paternity test.””

Everything went still.

“You have it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Because I was the person who found out the truth first.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me.””

Her voice trembled.

“Marcus…”

“What?””

The answer came softly.

And it destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Daniel is not Ava’s father.””

I stopped breathing.

“Then who is?””

Vanessa was silent.

Too silent.

Then she said:

“The answer is written on the report.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Where is it?””

Another pause.

“At your house.””

I looked toward the street.

Toward the home where my daughter was waiting.

And suddenly I understood.

Vanessa had never left empty-handed.

She had taken something.

Something she knew I would eventually come looking for.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

“What?””

“I need you to understand something.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“I didn’t break up your family.””

A chill moved through me.

“I saved you from the truth.””

The call ended.

May you like

And for the first time since Rachel died…

I was afraid to go home.
