Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed

I arrived at the restaurant twenty minutes early.

I told myself it was because I wanted answers.

The truth was simpler.

I didn’t trust myself to wait.

The city moved around me as I sat near the window.

Cars passed.

People laughed.

A couple shared dessert at the table beside me.

Everything looked normal.

But my life had become a place where nothing was normal anymore.

At twelve exactly, Daniel walked in.

I recognized him immediately.

Older than the last time I had seen him.

More tired.

The confident businessman image was gone.

He looked like someone carrying a weight he had never put down.

He saw me.

Stopped.

Then walked over.

“Marcus.””

I didn’t stand.

“Sit.””

He sat across from me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he reached into his jacket.

I immediately stiffened.

He noticed.

“It’s not a weapon.””

“I didn’t say it was.””

“But you thought it.””

He placed an envelope on the table.

My heart tightened.

“What is that?””

“Rachel’s letter to me.””

I stared at it.

“You kept it.””

“Yes.””

“For eight years.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because I was a coward.””

That answer caught me off guard.

I expected excuses.

Denial.

Anger.

Not this.

“Open it.””

I looked at the envelope.

“You want me to read it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because you deserve the truth.””

I opened it.

Rachel’s handwriting.

Again.

My hands shook.

Daniel watched silently as I read.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then Marcus knows.

I hope he doesn’t hate me.

I hope he doesn’t hate you.

But most of all, I hope he understands that Ava was never a question of blood.

She was a question of love.

I stopped.

My throat tightened.

I continued.

The night before Ava was born, I made a mistake.

Not because I didn’t love Marcus.

Because I was afraid.

Daniel was there for me when Marcus and I were struggling.

I was lonely.

I was scared.

And I crossed a line I never should have crossed.

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

A betrayal.

A real one.

But then I read the next part.

When I found out I was pregnant, I knew there was a possibility Ava could be Daniel’s.

I hated myself.

I wanted to tell Marcus.

I wanted to tell Daniel.

But then I saw Marcus holding my stomach, talking to our baby.

I saw how much he already loved her.

And I was terrified of destroying that.

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at the table.

“You loved her,” I said.

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you love Ava?””

His eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

“And did you ever try to take her from me?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because you were her father.””

The words hit me.

Not legally.

Not biologically.

But emotionally.

Daniel continued.

“Rachel wanted a test.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She wanted to know.””

“When?””

“After Ava was born.””

I stared at him.

“She never told me.””

“She never told me either.””

“Then how do you know?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because I was there.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Where?””

“The hospital.””

My hands tightened.

“The night Ava was born?””

“Yes.””

The room disappeared.

I was suddenly back there.

Eight years earlier.

Rachel exhausted but smiling.

Me holding our newborn daughter.

The happiest moment of my life.

A moment I thought was perfect.

Daniel looked at me.

“She called me.””

“Why?””

“She said she needed to know the truth.””

My chest tightened.

“And?””

“She took the test.””

I whispered:

“What was the result?””

Daniel looked away.

That was when I knew.

There was more.

“Daniel.””

He finally met my eyes.

“The result was inconclusive.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It meant the sample wasn’t usable.””

I stared at him.

“So nobody knew.””

“No.””

“Then why did Rachel think Ava might not be mine?””

“Because she knew about the affair.””

The words sat between us.

Heavy.

Ugly.

Real.

I looked down.

For eight years, I had built a life around a question nobody answered.

A question Rachel carried alone.

A question Daniel buried.

A question Vanessa somehow found.

“How did Vanessa get involved?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

That was the first time I saw real fear.

“What?””

“Why is she part of this?””

He hesitated.

“Because she knows more than she told you.””

I leaned forward.

“How?””

Daniel looked around the restaurant.

Then lowered his voice.

“Because Vanessa found Rachel’s medical records.””

My blood ran cold.

“What records?””

“The ones from the hospital.””

“That’s impossible.””

“She had access.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she wasn’t just Rachel’s friend.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“She was there the night Ava was born.””

The room became silent.

I heard every sound.

Every fork.

Every conversation.

Every heartbeat.

“Vanessa was at the hospital?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew about the possibility before you did.””

My hands went cold.

“Why wouldn’t she tell me?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Because suddenly I understood.

Vanessa had not discovered a secret.

She had been holding one.

For years.

My phone vibrated.

I looked down.

A message from Vanessa.

One sentence.

*Ask Daniel who changed the paternity test results.*

I looked up slowly.

May you like

Daniel’s face had gone pale.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.
