Chapter 12: The Father Who Buried the Truth

I stared at the photograph until the details blurred.

Richard.

Standing outside my house.

The night Rachel died.

For years, I had believed I knew how that night happened.

Rachel had been sick.

Her condition worsened.

She went to the hospital.

She never came home.

That was the story.

The story everyone gave me.

The story I accepted because grief makes you desperate for simple answers.

But now every simple answer was gone.

I drove straight to Richard’s house.

I didn’t call.

I didn’t ask permission.

I walked up the steps and knocked.

He opened the door almost immediately.

Almost like he was expecting me.

“Marcus.””

His face remained calm.

Too calm.

“Why were you at my house the night Rachel died?””

The color drained from his face.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I don’t know what you mean.””

I held up the photo.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

Richard stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

“Lower your voice.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t get to control this anymore.””

His jaw tightened.

“Careful.””

There it was.

The same coldness I remembered.

The same attitude.

The same belief that everyone else was beneath him.

“You knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Rachel was investigating her medical records.””

Silence.

“You knew she found something.””

Still silence.

“You knew someone was changing things.””

Richard looked away.

And that was all the confirmation I needed.

“What did you do?””

His face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

“You were there.””

“I was helping my daughter.””

“By hiding the truth?””

He stepped closer.

“Rachel was unstable.””

My stomach turned.

“Excuse me?””

“She was sick. She was emotional. She made accusations.””

“About you?””

His eyes narrowed.

“She didn’t understand the consequences.””

I felt anger burning through me.

“You’re talking about your own daughter.””

“She was going to destroy everything.””

The words came out before he could stop them.

Everything went quiet.

I stared.

“What was she going to destroy?””

Richard realized his mistake.

His expression changed.

But it was too late.

“You know something.””

He looked at me.

“I know enough.””

“No.””

He stepped back.

“You know nothing.””

I pulled out my phone.

“I know someone entered my house.””

His face changed.

“I know someone threatened my daughter.””

A pause.

“And I know you were there the night Rachel died.””

Richard’s voice lowered.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You listen.””

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“I spent eight years believing I lost my wife because fate was cruel.””

I stepped closer.

“But now I think someone made a choice.””

Richard looked away.

“Rachel was going to ruin Ava’s future.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She wanted to take the money.””

“What money?””

He laughed quietly.

“Don’t pretend you don’t know.””

“I don’t.””

His expression changed.

Then he said:

“The inheritance.””

I stared.

“That was it?””

“You don’t understand.””

“No, I don’t.””

“Rachel was going to remove my control.””

I felt sick.

“So you manipulated everything.””

“No.””

“You changed records.””

“No.””

“You threatened her.””

“No.””

“You watched her die.””

His silence answered.

I stepped back.

“Did you kill my wife?””

Richard’s face went pale.

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t kill Rachel.””

“Then who did?””

Richard looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

“You really don’t know.””

A chill moved through me.

“Know what?””

Richard whispered:

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to marry you for your family.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

His voice dropped.

“Because she needed access to Ava.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was never after you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Richard looked toward my house in the distance.

“She was after what Rachel left behind.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

One photo.

Ava’s birth certificate.

With one detail circled.

A name.

Not mine.

Not Daniel’s.

A third name.

Below it was a message:

*Now you know why Rachel was afraid.*

I looked at the name.

And the world went silent.

May you like

Because the person listed as Ava’s biological father…

was someone I had known my entire life.
