Chapter 7: The Father Who Stole the Truth
The name stayed between us like a weapon.
*Daniel’s father.*
I expected anger.
I expected disbelief.
I expected him to tell me I was wrong.
But Daniel said nothing.
That scared me more than anything.
Because somewhere deep inside, he already knew.
He knew because every family has shadows.
And sometimes the people we love most are the ones who know exactly where to hide them.
“Say it again,” Daniel whispered.
My throat tightened.
“I remember him.””
Daniel stared at me.
“Who?””
I closed my eyes.
The memory was broken.
Fragments.
Sounds.
Smells.
But they were finally coming back.
A dark hallway.
Rain hitting a window.
A man’s hand holding mine.
A voice I had once trusted.
“Your father.””
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
It wasn’t anger.
It was pain.
A child’s refusal to accept something impossible.
“My father died five years ago.””
I nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“He couldn’t have…”
His voice faded.
Victoria stood silently nearby.
For once, she wasn’t defending herself.
She was watching Daniel experience the same kind of betrayal she had lived with her entire life.
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
Victoria looked down.
“Not everything.””
“But you knew my father was involved.””
“Yes.””
His expression changed.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would believe me.””
The answer shocked him.
“What?””
Victoria swallowed.
“Because if I told you the truth, I would have lost the only person in the Sterling family who ever treated me like I mattered.””
Daniel looked away.
The anger on his face weakened.
Only for a second.
Then the pain returned.
“Tell me everything.””
Victoria took a breath.
“Richard Laurent was never the one controlling everything.””
She looked at me.
“He worked with your father.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
My father.
The man whose face I barely remembered.
The man I had spent my entire life believing was innocent.
“What did they do?””
Victoria walked toward the broken window.
“My father wanted Sterling Industries.””
She spoke quietly.
“But he didn’t have enough power to take it.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“So he used me.””
“Yes.””
“And Lily?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Your father found out Richard was planning to betray the family.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He knew.””
She nodded.
“He knew everything.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Then why would he take Lily?””
Victoria’s voice lowered.
“Because he thought he was protecting her.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that made no sense.
A father taking his own daughter.
A brother losing his sister.
A family destroyed by someone claiming to protect them.
It was impossible.
But impossible things had become my entire life.
We returned to the Sterling mansion before sunrise.
Nobody spoke during the drive.
Daniel sat beside me in silence.
I could feel his mind fighting against itself.
Trying to protect the memory of his father.
Trying to accept the truth.
When we entered the mansion, he stopped in the hallway.
There was a large portrait hanging above the fireplace.
His father.
Arthur Sterling.
A respected businessman.
A beloved father.
A man whose name appeared in newspapers and charity records.
Daniel stared at the painting.
“I spent my whole life trying to become him.””
His voice was quiet.
“He was my hero.””
I stood beside him.
“Maybe he was.””
Daniel looked at me.
“How can you say that?””
“Because people can do terrible things for reasons they believe are right.””
He looked back at the portrait.
“That doesn’t make it okay.””
“No.””
I touched my locket.
“But it might explain why he did it.””
Daniel was silent.
Then his phone rang.
He answered immediately.
“Yes?””
His face changed.
“What?””
He listened for several seconds.
Then:
“Bring him in.””
He ended the call.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Security found something.””
The person waiting in the security room was someone I never expected to see.
An old man.
Gray hair.
Tired eyes.
A man who looked like he had carried a secret for too long.
Daniel stopped when he saw him.
“Thomas.””
The old man looked up.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.””
Thomas had been the Sterling family’s longtime driver.
The man who had worked for them for over thirty years.
The man who had driven Daniel to school.
The man who had attended every family celebration.
“What is he doing here?”” Daniel asked.
The security chief answered.
“We found him trying to leave through the east gate.””
Daniel looked at Thomas.
“Why?””
The old man lowered his head.
“Because I knew the truth was coming.””
My heart started beating faster.
Daniel stepped forward.
“What truth?””
Thomas looked at me.
And tears filled his eyes.
“Lily.””
The way he said my name made me freeze.
Not like someone who had just learned it.
Like someone who had been waiting years to say it.
“You remember me?””
Thomas nodded.
“I was there that night.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What night?””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“The night Lily disappeared.””
The room went silent.
“Tell us.””
The old man took a shaky breath.
“Your father came to me after midnight.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
Thomas looked at me.
“He said Lily was in danger.””
My fingers tightened.
“He told me someone was trying to hurt her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“So he asked you to take her?””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
The room felt colder.
“I drove Lily away from the estate.””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“You kidnapped my sister?””
Thomas looked devastated.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“I saved her.””
I stared.
“How?””
“Because your father was right about one thing.””
He reached into his coat and pulled out an old envelope.
“Someone was trying to kill you.””
The words made everyone freeze.
Daniel grabbed the envelope.
“What is this?””
“Proof.””
He opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Bank records.
A list of names.
Daniel read the first page.
Then his face changed.
“What…”
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
He handed me the paper.
It was a payment record.
A large transfer.
The sender:
*Sterling family private account.*
The recipient:
*A hired assassin.*
My hands went cold.
Thomas spoke quietly.
“Your father discovered someone had hired a person to eliminate Lily.””
Daniel looked up.
“Who?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then he pointed at the documents.
The name was written clearly.
A name that made Daniel’s entire body freeze.
A name that made Victoria cover her mouth.
A name that connected every lie.
Every betrayal.
Every missing piece.
*Eleanor Sterling.*
I stared.
“No.””
Thomas shook his head.
“That’s what your father believed.””
Daniel looked confused.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
The room exploded with silence.
Again.
Another impossible truth.
Another family secret.
I looked at my locket.
At the hidden message.
At my mother’s warning.
At everything we had discovered.
Something was wrong.
Because my mother’s note said:
*Trust Daniel. Never trust the Laurent family.*
But now the evidence pointed toward her.
The woman who had loved me.
The woman who had lost me.
The woman everyone blamed.
Daniel looked at the documents.
His voice broke.
“I don’t know what’s real anymore.””
Then Thomas whispered something that made my blood freeze.
“Because the records were forged.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
Thomas looked at me.
“The person who created the evidence against Eleanor…”
He paused.
“The person who made your father believe she betrayed him…”
His eyes moved toward the doorway.
Where a figure stood silently watching us.
A figure who had entered without anyone noticing.
A figure carrying a folder of original Sterling records.
And when she stepped into the light, my heart stopped.
Detective Harper.
Alive.
She smiled faintly.
“You’re finally asking the right questions.””
Daniel moved immediately.
“You.””
But Harper didn’t look at him.
She looked at me.
“Lily.””
She opened the folder.
“Your mother didn’t try to kill you.””
She placed a document on the table.
“She tried to save you.””
I stared at the paper.
And the final line made my blood run cold.
Because it revealed the one person who had manipulated everyone.
The one person who had been behind every disappearance.
Every lie.
Every betrayal.
The person who had been controlling the Sterling family for twenty-two years.
And it wasn’t Arthur Sterling.
It wasn’t Eleanor Sterling.
It wasn’t Richard Laurent.
May you like
It was someone nobody had ever suspected.
Someone who was supposed to be dead.
