Chapter 4: The Mother I Never Knew

For a moment, nobody breathed.

The garden became completely silent.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Silent in the way a room becomes silent after someone says something impossible.

*The ransom messages came from Eleanor Sterling.*

My mother.

The woman whose face had been hidden inside my locket for twenty-two years.

The woman I had spent my entire life imagining.

The woman I thought had been searching for me.

Daniel stared at Detective Harper as if he had forgotten how to speak.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Then louder.

“No.””

He shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Detective Harper looked down at the document in her hands.

“I know how this looks.””

“How this looks?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You’re telling me my mother kidnapped her own daughter?””

His voice broke.

“My mother spent every day searching for Lily.””

“I know.””

“She never stopped.””

“I know.””

“Then explain this.””

Detective Harper didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than if she had.

Because people who have good answers don’t hesitate.

They speak.

She looked at me.

“I need to explain something.””

I swallowed.

“Please.””

She opened the file.

“The original investigation was never as simple as everyone believed.””

She turned the pages.

“Your mother did send the ransom messages.””

Daniel looked away.

Pain crossed his face.

“But she didn’t send them to hurt you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Detective Harper pointed to the documents.

“Look at the dates.””

I stepped closer.

The first message was dated three days after I disappeared.

The second was five days later.

The third was almost two weeks later.

Then I noticed something.

“The handwriting…”

I touched the page.

“It changes.””

Detective Harper nodded.

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying the messages were written by different people.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then why does the record say they came from Eleanor?””

“Because someone wanted them to.””

Detective Harper looked toward the mansion.

“Someone manipulated the investigation.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Someone framed my mother.””

“Yes.””

The weight in my chest lifted slightly.

Not because everything was fixed.

But because the story had changed.

My mother might not have abandoned me.

She might not have betrayed me.

Someone had used her name.

Someone had destroyed my family from the inside.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why would someone do that?””

His face hardened.

“Money.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“Sterling Industries.””

He nodded.

“My father built the company with several partners.””

His eyes moved toward the mansion.

“Richard Laurent was one of them.””

Victoria’s father.

Again.

Detective Harper continued.

“Richard Laurent was struggling financially at the time. If the Sterling family collapsed, he had everything to gain.””

Daniel looked sick.

“But that doesn’t explain Lily.””

“No,” Detective Harper said.

“It doesn’t.””

She turned another page.

“That’s the part we never understood.””

The wind moved through the trees.

I touched my locket.

“What happened to me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel quietly said:

“We find out.””

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

The guest room they gave me was bigger than any apartment I had ever lived in.

A king-sized bed.

A balcony overlooking the garden.

Fresh flowers beside the window.

Everything was beautiful.

Everything felt wrong.

Because luxury could not erase memories.

I sat on the floor beside the bed, holding the old locket.

For twenty-two years, this tiny piece of silver had been my only connection to a family I thought I had lost.

Now I knew I had a brother.

A mother.

A history.

But I still didn’t know the truth.

I opened the locket again.

The small photograph inside was worn from my fingers touching it thousands of times.

A little girl.

A woman.

A man.

I stared at my mother’s face.

“Why didn’t you find me?””

The question escaped before I could stop it.

A tear fell onto the photograph.

Then something strange happened.

The back of the locket moved.

I froze.

I had opened that locket countless times.

But I had never noticed the tiny crack along the inside edge.

I grabbed a small pin from the bedside table and carefully pressed against the metal.

A hidden compartment opened.

My breath stopped.

Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.

Old.

Yellowed.

Almost destroyed by time.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written.

Seven words.

*Trust Daniel. Never trust the Laurent family.*

I stared at the message.

My heart raced.

Because whoever wrote this knew.

They knew what would happen.

They knew one day I would find my way back.

A knock came at the door.

I quickly folded the paper.

“Come in.””

Daniel entered.

He looked exhausted.

“Sorry.””

I smiled faintly.

“You don’t sleep either?””

He gave a small laugh.

“Apparently Sterling family problems don’t disappear overnight.””

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“I found something.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

I showed him the hidden note.

The moment he read it, all color left his face.

“Where did you get this?””

“Inside the locket.””

He looked at the message again.

“Lily…”

“What?””

He sat down slowly.

“My mother had this locket made.””

I stared.

“What?””

He looked at the necklace.

“When you were little, she told me she put something inside it.””

My heart started pounding.

“What did she put?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

“Why?””

“Because she said only you were supposed to find it.””

I looked at the note.

A terrible realization formed.

My mother knew.

She knew I might disappear.

She knew someone might come for me.

She prepared a message for the future.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“She knew.””

His eyes filled with sadness.

“She knew someone wanted to take me.””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“And she couldn’t stop it.””

The room became quiet.

For the first time, Daniel didn’t look like a billionaire.

He looked like a little boy who had lost his sister.

“I spent years angry at my parents.””

His voice cracked.

“I thought they failed you.””

I reached for his hand.

“But they didn’t.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

“They were victims too.””

Daniel squeezed my hand.

“Then we find who did this.””

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The expression on his face changed instantly.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

He just handed me the phone.

It was a video.

A security recording.

From the mansion.

The timestamp was from earlier that evening.

Before the gala ended.

The camera showed Victoria entering the archive room.

She was alone.

She opened the cabinet.

She removed my file.

Then she made a phone call.

The video had no sound.

But the next moment made my blood freeze.

Victoria turned toward the camera.

Almost like she knew she was being watched.

Then she held up a photograph.

A photograph of me as a child.

And she smiled.

Not the fake smile she showed the world.

A smile filled with hatred.

Daniel watched my face carefully.

“Lily.””

I couldn’t look away.

Because I finally understood something.

Victoria didn’t discover my identity tonight.

She had known for years.

The question was…

How?

The video continued.

Victoria placed the childhood photograph back into the file.

Then another person entered the room.

A man.

Older.

Gray hair.

I recognized him from the documents.

Richard Laurent.

Victoria’s father.

He looked at the file.

Then he said something.

The audio was too quiet.

But the security system enhanced it.

A single sentence played through the phone speaker.

“I told you, Victoria. If Lily Sterling ever comes home, she has to disappear again.””

My blood turned cold.

Daniel stood up immediately.

“No.””

The phone slipped from my hand.

Because behind Richard Laurent in the video…

Behind the man who wanted me gone…

stood someone else.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had spent the entire day helping us uncover the truth.

Detective Harper.

May you like

And she wasn’t looking shocked.

She was smiling.
