Chapter 5: The Enemy Who Wore a Badge

The video stopped.

The room stayed silent.

Daniel and I stared at the frozen image on the phone screen.

Detective Harper.

Standing behind Richard Laurent.

Smiling.

A woman who had spent hours sitting beside us.

A woman who had claimed she never stopped searching for the truth.

A woman who had looked me in the eyes and promised to help uncover what happened to me.

She had been there all along.

Not searching for the truth.

Protecting the lie.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

“No.””

His voice was low.

Almost dangerous.

He replayed the video.

Again.

And again.

Each time, the same image appeared.

Richard Laurent.

Victoria.

Detective Harper.

Together.

My stomach twisted.

“How long?””

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“How long has she been part of this?””

He didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.

And that scared me.

A person can prepare for an enemy.

You can fight someone who stands against you.

But someone who smiles, listens, and offers help while secretly destroying you?

That person gets close enough to hurt you before you realize you’re bleeding.

Daniel immediately called security.

“Lock down the mansion.””

The urgency in his voice made me stand.

“What are you doing?””

“Making sure nobody leaves.””

A few minutes later, the Sterling estate transformed.

Doors locked.

Security guards moved through the halls.

Phones were collected.

Every entrance was monitored.

For the first time, the mansion looked less like a home and more like a fortress.

But I knew something.

Fortresses only matter when you know where the enemy is.

And ours had already been inside.

We found Detective Harper in the main library.

She wasn’t running.

That almost made it worse.

She sat calmly in a chair, drinking coffee like she had been expecting us.

Daniel walked in first.

I followed behind him.

Her eyes moved toward us.

Then toward the phone in Daniel’s hand.

She sighed.

“So you found it.””

Daniel stopped.

“You knew.””

She placed the cup down.

“Yes.””

The simplicity of her answer made the room colder.

I stared at her.

“You knew who I was.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Victoria was looking for me.””

“Yes.””

“And you still helped her.””

Her expression changed slightly.

Not guilt.

Annoyance.

“I helped the person who had the power to control the situation.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You helped the woman who tried to frame my sister as a thief.””

Detective Harper looked at him.

“Your sister?””

A strange smile appeared.

“You finally believe it.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t.””

His voice was sharp.

“Don’t pretend you care.””

For the first time, her calm expression cracked.

“You have no idea what happened twenty-two years ago.””

I stepped forward.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

And something about her expression unsettled me.

Almost pity.

“You think your family was innocent.””

“Were they not?””

She looked away.

“That’s the problem with rich families. They rewrite history until they become heroes.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“My parents loved Lily.””

“Your parents loved the idea of Lily.””

The words hit me.

I didn’t know why.

Maybe because some small part of me feared she was right.

Detective Harper noticed.

She continued.

“Do you know why you were taken?””

Nobody answered.

“Because your father was about to expose the people closest to him.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“He discovered financial crimes inside Sterling Industries.””

She looked at him.

“Your father was preparing to remove Richard Laurent from the company.””

My heart raced.

“So Richard took me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel shook his head.

“But my mother…”

“Your mother found out.””

Detective Harper leaned back.

“She tried to get Lily back.””

My breathing slowed.

Because this was what I needed.

The truth.

Not another lie.

“What happened?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Your mother was going to expose Richard.””

A pause.

“Then she disappeared.””

The room went quiet.

I stared.

“What do you mean?””

Detective Harper’s voice lowered.

“Eleanor Sterling wasn’t the only person who vanished.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“What?””

“Three days after the last ransom message, your mother was involved in a car accident.””

I felt a chill.

“She survived.””

Detective Harper nodded.

“But someone moved her before the police arrived.””

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Detective Harper smiled.

And that smile made me realize something.

She wasn’t afraid.

She was enjoying this.

“Ask yourself who had access to everything.””

Daniel looked confused.

Then his expression changed.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked like he had just remembered something terrible.

“My father’s assistant.””

Detective Harper nodded.

“Exactly.””

The room shifted.

Another name.

Another person.

Another secret.

“How does this connect to you?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Because I was the detective assigned to your case.””

She stood slowly.

“And I was ordered to stop searching.””

“By who?””

She smiled.

“By your family.””

Daniel stepped back.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

She pulled a folder from her bag.

A real folder.

Not a fake file.

Not a hidden document.

Something she had been carrying the entire time.

She threw it onto the table.

Daniel opened it.

His face changed.

I moved closer.

Inside were photographs.

My mother.

My father.

Richard Laurent.

And someone else.

Someone I had never seen before.

A young man standing beside my parents.

Daniel stared.

“Who is this?””

Detective Harper answered quietly.

“Your uncle.””

I frowned.

“Daniel has an uncle?””

Daniel looked confused.

“I don’t.””

The detective smiled.

“You were told you didn’t.””

She pointed to the photograph.

“His name was Michael Sterling.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel looked like he had been hit.

“Michael…”

He whispered.

Then he shook his head.

“He died before I was born.””

“No.””

Detective Harper looked at him.

“He didn’t.””

The room went completely still.

“Your grandfather erased him from the family records.””

Daniel’s voice was barely audible.

“Why?””

“Because Michael knew the truth.””

I looked at the photographs.

“How is he connected to me?””

Detective Harper didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“He was the person who saved you.””

A wave of confusion hit me.

“Saved me?””

She nodded.

“When Richard Laurent took you, Michael found out.””

Daniel stared.

“And he returned her?””

Detective Harper’s expression darkened.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He hid you.””

My heart stopped.

“He protected you from everyone.””

“Then why didn’t he bring me home?””

Her eyes softened.

“Because he discovered something worse.””

The room became colder.

“What?””

Detective Harper opened the final document.

It was a birth record.

But not mine.

Someone else’s.

A child born two years after my disappearance.

A child connected to the Sterling family.

Daniel looked at the paper.

Then his face went pale.

“What is this?””

Detective Harper whispered:

“The reason Richard Laurent needed Lily gone.””

I looked at the name.

And my hands started shaking.

Because the child listed on the document was not a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone standing very close to my new family.

Daniel looked up slowly.

His voice broke.

“Victoria…”

Detective Harper nodded.

“Victoria Laurent was never just Richard Laurent’s daughter.””

The lights suddenly went out.

A crash came from the hallway.

Then a voice echoed through the darkness.

“Don’t believe another word she says.””

The lights returned.

Detective Harper was gone.

The library window was shattered.

May you like

And on the table where she had left the final document…

was a fresh drop of blood.
