Thinking

Chapter 9: The DNA Report

The words hung in the interview room like smoke.

Vanessa was never pregnant.

Daniel stared at Claire, trying to fit the statement into a world that no longer made sense.

"Explain that," he said.

Claire wiped her cheeks.

"Vanessa told everyone she was expecting a baby shortly after I became ill. She wore loose clothing, avoided questions, and said her doctor wanted her to rest.""

Rachel looked stunned.

"She told me she was having a difficult pregnancy.""

"She told me the same thing," Daniel said.

Claire nodded.

"She said she had suffered a miscarriage before I gave birth to Lily. She claimed she was terrified of losing another baby.""

Daniel remembered Vanessa crying at the hospital after Claire's delivery.

He remembered comforting her while she spoke about the child she had supposedly lost.

He remembered thinking she understood his grief.

Now he wondered whether the entire story had been designed to make him feel sorry for her.

Detective Morgan returned to the room.

"I need to clarify something," she said.

"The woman claiming to be Vanessa has produced a DNA report, but we haven't verified its authenticity. Even if the report is genuine, we need to establish whose samples were tested and what relationship the results actually demonstrate.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"She says she's Lily's biological mother?""

"Yes.""

"How could she be?""

Morgan placed a document on the table.

"That's what we need to establish.""

Claire stared at the paper.

"Vanessa can't be Lily's mother.""

"Why are you certain?""

"Because I gave birth to Lily.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You remember that clearly?""

Claire nodded.

"I remember Lily's face. I remember holding her. I remember the little mark on her shoulder.""

She pressed her hand to her mouth.

"I remember asking for my other baby.""

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

For two years, he had told Lily stories about her mother.

He had described Claire's laugh, her favorite songs, and the way she danced barefoot in the kitchen.

He had told those stories believing he was preserving memories of someone who would never return.

Now the woman sitting before him claimed to be that person.

And another woman was using a DNA report to challenge her identity.

He felt as though he were standing between two mirrors, unable to tell which reflection was real.

Detective Morgan took out her notebook.

"Claire, do you remember signing any documents after Lily's birth?""

"I remember signing something when I was in the hospital. I was told it was consent for medical treatment.""

"Did you read it?""

"No. I was exhausted, and I trusted the staff.""

"Did Vanessa have access to your medical records?""

Claire nodded.

"She helped with appointments. She had copies of some of my paperwork.""

Morgan made a note.

"Did you ever give her permission to register a child in her own name?""

"No.""

Daniel looked at the detective.

"Could someone have changed the records?""

"It's possible. We need the original documents, the audit trail, and independent DNA testing before drawing conclusions.""

Rachel leaned forward.

"What about the second baby?""

"We're tracing the guardianship and registration records. There are gaps, but we've identified several documents that may help us establish the child's whereabouts.""

Claire closed her eyes.

"Rose.""

Daniel reached for her hand.

"We'll find her.""

She nodded, but her face remained haunted.

"What if she doesn't want to know us?""

"Then we'll give her the truth and let her decide what she wants to do with it.""

Detective Morgan stood.

"I need to speak with Vanessa's attorney. Daniel, I also need you to authorize access to any relevant family records you have. Medical records, financial statements, correspondence, anything connected to Claire's final months.""

"Take whatever you need.""

"And one more thing. We need to arrange DNA testing through a qualified laboratory. No one should rely on a report supplied by a person whose identity and motives are under investigation.""

Daniel nodded.

As the detective left, Rachel sat beside Claire.

"Do you remember anything about the night you disappeared?""

Claire stared at the table.

"Fragments.""

"Tell me.""

"I remember Vanessa coming into the hospital room. She said Daniel was waiting downstairs. She said I needed to leave before the doctors changed their minds about something.""

"Changed their minds about what?""

"I don't know.""

Claire pressed her fingers against her temples.

"I remember being afraid. I remember asking to see Lily. Vanessa told me Lily was asleep.""

Daniel felt a cold weight settle in his stomach.

"Was Lily in the room?""

"No.""

"Was the other baby?""

Claire shook her head.

"I couldn't see either of them.""

Rachel's voice broke.

"Claire, what did you do?""

"I went with Vanessa.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because she told me the hospital was making a mistake. She said one of the babies had been transferred, and if I didn't cooperate, I might lose both children.""

Claire began to cry.

"I was sick, Daniel. I was frightened. I didn't know what was happening.""

He wanted to be angry.

He wanted to demand why she had trusted Vanessa.

But he remembered the way he had trusted her himself.

He remembered all the times Vanessa had spoken on his behalf, answered questions directed at Lily, and explained away his daughter's tears.

He couldn't blame Claire for being manipulated by the same woman who had manipulated him.

"You're here now," he whispered.

Claire looked up.

"Am I?""

The question was so fragile that he didn't know how to answer.

At the police station, a few hours later, Detective Morgan returned with an update.

"The initial verification of Vanessa's DNA report has raised concerns. The laboratory listed on the document says it did not issue the report.""

Daniel felt his pulse quicken.

"So it's fake?""

"We can't conclude that yet. The document may have been altered, or the samples may have been processed elsewhere. We're investigating.""

Rachel shook her head.

"Why would Vanessa fake a DNA report?""

Morgan looked at her.

"To establish a legal claim, discredit another person, or influence a family dispute. Those are possibilities, not conclusions.""

Claire's face tightened.

"She wants Lily.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Why?""

"Because Lily is the one person who can lead you to the truth.""

He looked at the detective.

"How?""

Claire explained that Vanessa had repeatedly asked about the blue box. She had wanted the key, the letters, and the recording. She had even threatened to destroy the few remaining photographs of Claire if Lily continued asking questions.

"Vanessa thinks the box contains something that could prove what she did," Claire said.

Detective Morgan nodded slowly.

"We've received information that may help us locate it. An officer has spoken with the neighbor who saw the two women at the Carter residence. The scene has been secured, and a search will be conducted under the appropriate authorization.""

Daniel looked at the clock.

"How long will it take?""

"As long as it takes to do it properly.""

He wanted to argue, but he knew she was right.

They had spent years living with lies. He wouldn't risk destroying evidence by rushing into the house.

Instead, he called Mrs. Bennett.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel? Is everything all right?""

"No. But Lily is safe, isn't she?""

"She's with the safeguarding team. She's had something to eat, and she's resting. Rachel's friend is bringing her some clean clothes.""

Daniel closed his eyes in relief.

"Thank you.""

"She asked me to tell you something.""

"What?""

"She wants to know if her mother is coming home.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Tell her I'm doing everything I can to find out the truth.""

Mrs. Bennett was quiet for a moment.

"Daniel, can I tell you something as her teacher?""

"Please.""

"Lily doesn't need you to have all the answers today. She needs you to believe her when she tells you she's frightened.""

Daniel looked down.

"I understand.""

"I hope so. Because she's been trying to tell someone for a long time.""

After the call ended, he sat silently beside Rachel.

He could still hear Lily's voice in his mind.

I tried to tell you.

For months, he had mistaken silence for contentment.

He had mistaken obedience for good behavior.

He had mistaken Vanessa's polished explanations for truth.

His daughter had been hungry in a house full of food, frightened in a home that looked safe, and lonely in a family that was supposed to love her.

He had been there.

And he had failed to see her.

The police called just after dusk.

Detective Morgan's voice was urgent.

"We've recovered a locked metal box from the garage. It matches the description Claire provided.""

Daniel stood.

"Is the key inside?""

"No. But the box appears to have been opened at some point and then secured again.""

"What's inside?""

"We haven't completed the examination. There are letters, financial records, and a small digital recording device.""

Claire gripped Daniel's arm.

"The recording.""

Morgan continued.

"We're preserving the contents. One document appears to relate to a guardianship arrangement involving a child named Rose Carter.""

Daniel's heart pounded.

"Does it say where she is?""

"The document contains an address, but we need to verify it before sharing details.""

"Is she alive?""

"We don't know yet.""

Claire began to cry.

Daniel held her hand.

"Please," he said to the detective.

"If there is any way to find her, do it.""

"We're already working on it.""

The call ended.

Rachel wiped her eyes.

"After all these years, we're finally going to know.""

Daniel looked at the box's photograph that Detective Morgan had sent to his phone.

It was old and scratched, with a broken clasp and a blue ribbon tied around the handle.

He remembered Claire placing it in the closet.

He remembered her saying it contained keepsakes she wanted Lily to have when she was older.

He remembered Vanessa telling him that Claire had been confused near the end, that she'd hidden things around the house, that he shouldn't encourage Lily to search for them.

He had believed her.

Again.

His phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*You should stop looking for Rose.*

Daniel stared at it.

A second message followed.

*She has a good life. You will ruin it if you tell her who she really is.*

Rachel read the messages over his shoulder.

"Who sent that?""

Daniel shook his head.

Then a third message appeared.

*Ask Lily what Vanessa told her about the little girl in the garden.*

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

He immediately called Mrs. Bennett.

"Put Lily on the phone, please. I need to ask her something important.""

A few minutes later, Lily's small voice came through.

"Daddy?""

"Sweetheart, do you remember seeing a little girl in the garden at home?""

There was a long silence.

Then Lily whispered, "Yes.""

"What did Vanessa tell you about her?""

Lily's breathing grew shaky.

"She said the girl was my sister.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Did she tell you her name?""

"Rose.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

Daniel could barely speak.

"Did you ever talk to her?""

Lily nodded, though he couldn't see it.

"Once. She was standing by the fence. She had my face.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"What happened?""

"Vanessa came outside and took her away.""

"When was this?""

"Last summer.""

Daniel felt his blood turn cold.

"Last summer?""

Lily began to cry.

"Vanessa said Rose was bad and that I wasn't allowed to talk to her. She said if I told you, you'd send me away too.""

Daniel pressed the phone against his ear.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I thought you already knew.""

The answer broke something inside him.

He had been so busy believing that he understood his own family that he had failed to notice his daughter was living beside a mystery he hadn't even known existed.

Then Lily whispered something else.

"There's one more thing, Daddy.""

"What is it?""

"Rose gave me something before Vanessa took her away.""

Daniel stood motionless.

"What did she give you?""

"A little bracelet.""

"What did it look like?""

"It had pink thread tied around it.""

Rachel began to sob.

The hospital bracelet.

The one Claire remembered tying around her second daughter's wrist.

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Where is it now, sweetheart?""

"In my room.""

"Where?""

Lily's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Under the floorboard beside my bed.""

Daniel felt the room tilt.

Before he could answer, Lily said, "Daddy, there's something written on it.""

"What does it say?""

Lily took a shaky breath.

Then she read the words aloud.

*Rose Carter. Mother: Claire Carter.*

A pause followed.

Then Lily whispered the words that changed everything.

"Daddy, Rose didn't disappear.""

Daniel's throat tightened.

"Then where is she?""

Lily began to cry.

"She's been living next door.""

And in the silence that followed, Daniel remembered the one person who had always seemed to know more about the Carter family than anyone else.

Frank Miller.

His neighbor.

The retired police officer who had called him about the two women.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

May you like

Because if Lily was telling the truth, then Rose had been within walking distance of their house for years.

And someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to keep the sisters apart.
