Chapter 6: Two Women, One Marriage
Daniel couldn't hear anything except the pounding of his own heart.
“Frank, repeat that.””
“I'm standing outside your house,” his neighbor said.
“There are two women inside. Both look like Vanessa. Both are claiming to be your wife.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
“Are you sure you're not mistaken?””
“Daniel, I've known you for nine years. I've seen Vanessa hundreds of times. I know what she looks like.””
“Then call the police.””
“Already did. They told me not to enter the property.””
Daniel looked toward Rachel.
She had heard enough to understand that something terrible was unfolding.
“What happened?”” she asked.
Daniel lowered the phone.
“There's another woman at my house who looks exactly like Vanessa.””
Rachel went pale.
“No.””
“You know something?””
She shook her head, but her expression told a different story.
“Rachel.””
She looked at him.
“Claire once told me Vanessa had a sister.””
Daniel frowned.
“She never mentioned a sister to me.””
“Claire said they were estranged. She said the sister had been involved in something that frightened her.””
“Something like what?””
“I don't know. Claire refused to explain.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why didn't you tell me this earlier?””
“Because I didn't know whether it was relevant. And because Claire asked me not to repeat it unless I had evidence.””
Mrs. Bennett stepped closer.
“We need to keep Lily here until the authorities tell us what to do. Whatever is happening at your house, she should not be brought into it.””
Daniel nodded.
He turned toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, I need you to stay with Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Collins for a little while.””
Lily's face crumpled.
“Are you leaving me?””
“I'm going to find out what's happening. I'm not leaving you alone.””
“But what if Vanessa comes here?””
Mrs. Bennett knelt beside her.
“We'll follow the school's safety procedures, and we'll make sure the people responsible for protecting children know what you're afraid of.””
Lily looked at her father.
“Daddy, please don't believe her.””
Daniel's eyes filled.
“I won't make that mistake again.””
He wanted to stay. Every instinct told him to sit beside his daughter and never let her out of his sight.
But he also knew that whatever was happening at home might be connected to the secret Claire had tried to protect.
He needed answers.
And he needed the police to get them safely.
Rachel offered to remain at the school while the safeguarding professionals worked out the next steps.
Daniel thanked her, then stepped into the hallway and called Frank again.
“Tell me exactly what you're seeing.””
Frank spoke in a low voice.
“One woman is standing in the living room. The other is near the kitchen. They're arguing.””
“Can you hear what they're saying?””
“Some of it.””
“What?””
Frank paused.
“The woman in the kitchen just said, 'You promised me she would never find the key.''”
Daniel's stomach dropped.
“And the other woman?””
“She said, 'I didn't know the child had kept it.''”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The women knew about the key.
They knew about the box.
And at least one of them had lied about the box being destroyed.
“Frank, don't approach them. Stay outside and let the police handle it.””
“That's the plan.””
Daniel ended the call.
For several seconds, he stood in the hallway with his hands hanging uselessly at his sides.
He thought of Claire's final weeks.
He thought of the hospital corridors, the medicine bottles, the late-night conversations he hadn't understood.
He thought of Vanessa sitting beside him at the funeral, pressing a tissue into his hand while he cried.
She had told him that Claire would want him to move forward.
She had told him that Lily needed a mother.
She had told him that love meant letting go of the past.
And he had believed her.
His phone rang again.
This time, the number belonged to a woman he had not spoken to in more than two years.
Claire's former attorney.
“Mr. Carter,” the attorney said, “I understand you're with Rachel.””
Daniel froze.
“How do you know that?””
“Because I received a call from the authorities. They asked me about a sealed document connected to your late wife's estate.””
“What sealed document?””
“The one Claire instructed me to release if anyone attempted to challenge her daughter's inheritance or remove her from the people named in her care plan.””
Daniel pressed a hand against the wall.
“Why am I only hearing about this now?””
“Because the document was sealed under specific instructions. I wasn't authorized to release it simply because you asked.””
“What's in it?””
The attorney hesitated.
“Mr. Carter, I need to be careful. I can tell you that your wife had concerns about the way certain financial and medical decisions were being handled during her final months.””
Daniel's voice became rough.
“Did she believe Vanessa was hurting her?””
“I cannot answer that without reviewing the complete file.””
“Then review it.””
“I am doing so now. But there is one thing you should understand.””
“What?””
“Claire did not want her daughter left alone with someone she feared.””
Daniel's legs nearly gave way.
He gripped the wall.
“Who did she fear?””
The attorney didn't answer immediately.
Then he said, “I believe the sealed file may identify the person she was talking about.””
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Can you send it to the authorities?””
“Yes. I've already been asked to preserve the original records.””
“Thank you.””
After the call ended, Daniel returned to the principal's office.
Mrs. Bennett was sitting beside Lily, helping her draw on a sheet of paper.
Lily had drawn a house.
There were three figures in the front yard.
One was tall, with short dark hair.
One was small, with long hair.
The third was a woman with dark hair and a blue dress.
Above the woman, Lily had written a name.
*MOMMY.*
Daniel sat beside her.
“That's a beautiful drawing, sweetheart.””
Lily didn't look up.
“I don't want Vanessa to throw it away.””
“She won't get to decide what you keep.””
Lily pressed the pencil harder against the paper.
“Can I keep Mommy's photograph?””
“Yes.””
“And the key?””
“Yes.””
“And can I have my old room back?””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“Of course.””
Lily looked up.
“Will Vanessa be there?””
Daniel didn't know how to answer.
He couldn't promise that Vanessa would never return. He couldn't promise that the authorities would resolve everything that evening.
But he could tell Lily the truth.
“I don't know what will happen next. But you won't have to face it alone.””
Lily stared at him.
Then she leaned against his side.
For the first time that day, Daniel felt her body relax.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Frank appeared.
*Police are here. They have both women separated. You need to come when they say it's safe.*
Daniel showed the message to Rachel.
She read it and covered her mouth.
“What if one of them really is Vanessa's sister?””
Daniel looked at her.
“Then we'll find out who she is.””
Rachel lowered her voice.
“And what if the other one isn't Vanessa?””
Neither of them spoke.
The thought was absurd.
Yet the documents, the hidden key, the strange phone calls, and the two women at the house all pointed toward a secret that had been carefully maintained for years.
Daniel looked at Lily.
She was coloring the windows of her drawn house yellow.
“Sweetheart,” he said, “do you remember when Vanessa first came to live with us?””
Lily nodded.
“She came before the wedding.””
“Did she ever tell you anything about her family?””
“She said she didn't have anyone.””
“Did she ever mention a sister?””
Lily stopped coloring.
“Once.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“What did she say?””
Lily looked toward Mrs. Bennett, then back at her father.
“She said she had a twin.””
Rachel's face went white.
Daniel stared at his daughter.
“A twin?””
Lily nodded.
“She said her sister was dead to her.””
Daniel felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.
Rachel whispered, “That would explain the resemblance.””
“But not the lies,” Daniel replied.
He stood and walked to the window.
Outside, the school playground was empty. A few leaves scraped across the pavement in the wind.
He had spent two years believing that his wife's death was the tragedy that had broken his family.
Now he wondered whether the tragedy had begun long before Claire died.
His phone rang again.
The police officer on the line introduced herself as Detective Morgan.
“Mr. Carter, we've secured the scene at your residence. We need you to come in and answer some questions.””
“Are both women still there?””
“Yes.””
“Have you identified them?””
“We're working on that.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Is Lily safe?””
“From what we can determine, she is safe at school. We have coordinated with the appropriate child-protection personnel, and no one should remove her without the necessary authorization.””
“Thank you.””
Detective Morgan paused.
“Mr. Carter, there's something else.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What now?””
“One of the women has identification in the name of Vanessa Carter. The other has no identification at all.””
“Has she given you her name?””
“Yes.””
“What is it?””
The detective took a breath.
“Claire Carter.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
For a moment, he couldn't speak.
Then he forced out the question.
“Did she say why she was at my house?””
“She said she came to retrieve her daughter.””
Daniel looked across the room at Lily.
The little girl was staring at him.
She had heard the name.
“Daddy?”” she whispered.
Daniel walked back to her and knelt beside her chair.
“Sweetheart, I need you to listen to me.””
Lily's eyes filled with fear.
“Is Mommy alive?””
Daniel had no answer.
He looked at Rachel.
She looked just as stunned.
Then his phone buzzed again.
A photograph had arrived from an unknown number.
It showed a woman standing outside the Carter house, wearing a blue dress.
Her dark hair was longer than Claire's had been in the last photograph Daniel remembered.
But her eyes were unmistakable.
Beneath the image was a message.
*Daniel, if you want to know what really happened to your wife, ask Vanessa why she buried two wedding rings.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
Two rings.
One marriage.
Two women who looked exactly alike.
And a daughter who had spent two years being told that her mother was gone forever.
He turned the phone toward Rachel.
She read the message.
Then she whispered something that made Daniel's blood run cold.
“Claire wore two wedding rings the day she disappeared from my life.””
Daniel looked up sharply.
“Disappeared?””
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, I never told you the whole story about the last time I saw my sister.””
She glanced toward Lily, then lowered her voice.
“Because the last time I saw Claire alive, she wasn't sick.””
She swallowed hard.
“She was running away from someone.””
May you like
And before Daniel could ask who, Detective Morgan called again.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to come to the station immediately. The woman claiming to be Claire has just told us something about your daughter's birth that changes the entire case.””
