Chapter 8: The Child Who Was Never Missing

For a long moment, Daniel could only stare at the detective.

"Vanessa took my daughter?""

Detective Morgan raised a hand.

"The record indicates that a child was discharged into her care. We still need to establish the circumstances, confirm the child's identity, and determine whether the documentation is authentic.""

"But she wasn't the mother.""

"That's what we're investigating.""

Rachel stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

"Why would a hospital release a newborn to someone who wasn't the mother?""

"That is one of the questions we're asking.""

Daniel pressed both hands against the table.

He remembered Vanessa carrying Lily through the front door after Claire came home from the hospital. He remembered the baby sleeping against Vanessa's shoulder while Claire rested upstairs.

He remembered Vanessa saying she had a natural talent with children.

He remembered laughing.

He remembered trusting her.

"Was the second baby registered?"" he asked.

Detective Morgan nodded.

"There's a second birth record, but the name field is incomplete. It appears that the registration was amended later.""

"Amended by whom?""

"We're tracing the paperwork.""

Daniel looked at Claire.

She was crying silently.

"Do you remember naming the second baby?"" he asked.

Claire shook her head.

"I remember choosing two names.""

"What were they?""

"Lily and Rose.""

Rachel covered her mouth.

Daniel felt his chest tighten.

"Lily and Rose.""

Claire nodded.

"Lily was the name we agreed on first. Rose was the name I wanted if we had a second daughter.""

Daniel sank into his chair.

He remembered those conversations.

They had happened on quiet evenings in their bedroom, long before Claire became ill.

He had teased her about filling their house with daughters.

She had told him that a house full of children would be the happiest place in the world.

Now he wondered whether their house had once held two babies while he had been too distracted to see what was happening.

Detective Morgan turned to Claire.

"Do you remember where you were taken after leaving the hospital?""

Claire closed her eyes.

"I remember a white room. A window that didn't open. A clock with a broken second hand.""

"Do you remember the city?""

"No.""

"Do you remember the name of the facility?""

Claire shook her head.

"I was told it was a rehabilitation center. I remember being given medication. I remember sleeping for long periods.""

Daniel stared at her.

"How long were you there?""

"I don't know. Weeks, maybe months.""

"And nobody contacted me?""

Claire looked at him with unbearable sadness.

"Vanessa told me you had remarried. She showed me photographs of you with another woman. She told me Lily was happy and didn't remember me.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"What photographs?""

"She showed me pictures of you with Vanessa and Lily. Sometimes you were smiling. Sometimes you were holding hands.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

He remembered the photographs.

Vanessa had taken them during family outings, birthdays, and holidays. She had posted some online, saying she wanted to celebrate their new beginning.

He had thought they were harmless.

Now he wondered whether they had been used to convince Claire that her family had moved on without her.

"Why didn't you contact the police?"" Rachel asked.

Claire looked down.

"I tried once.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa told me the police had already investigated my disappearance. She said I had abandoned my family and that Daniel had obtained a court order preventing me from seeing Lily.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's a lie. I never filed anything like that.""

"I know that now.""

Claire looked at him.

"But at the time, I couldn't remember everything. I didn't know which memories were real. Vanessa told me I had suffered a breakdown and that I needed to trust her.""

Rachel's eyes filled with anger.

"You trusted her because she was your friend.""

Claire nodded.

"She had been there for me when I was sick. She brought food, helped with appointments, and stayed with Lily when I needed to rest.""

Her voice cracked.

"I never imagined she would use that trust against me.""

Detective Morgan closed the folder.

"We need to verify the identity of the second child. The record suggests the baby was discharged to Vanessa, but we don't yet know what happened after that.""

Daniel stood.

"Where do we start?""

"The original hospital records. Then any adoption, guardianship, or amended birth registration documents connected to the child.""

"And the blue box?""

"We'll document it and preserve anything relevant if it's recovered. You should not search for or handle potential evidence without guidance from investigators.""

Daniel nodded.

He wanted to run home and tear the garage apart.

But he knew that acting recklessly could destroy the very evidence he needed.

Detective Morgan looked at Claire.

"Is there anything else you remember about the second baby?""

Claire pressed her fingers against her temples.

"Something about a bracelet.""

"What kind of bracelet?""

"A hospital bracelet. I remember seeing two of them. One had Lily's name. The other had a pink thread tied around it.""

Daniel looked up.

"Pink thread?""

Claire nodded.

"I tied it there myself. I wanted to be able to tell them apart.""

Rachel wiped her cheeks.

"Why would you need to tell them apart?""

Claire looked at her sister.

"Because they were identical.""

The room fell silent.

Daniel felt his stomach twist.

Two identical daughters.

One he had raised.

One he might never have known existed.

A child who could have grown up believing Vanessa was her mother.

A child who might have been taught to hate the family she had never met.

Detective Morgan's phone rang again.

She answered, listened, and then looked toward Daniel.

"We have a preliminary update.""

He moved closer.

"What is it?""

"The hospital's records department found a second name in the archived file. The child was eventually registered as Rose Carter.""

Claire covered her mouth.

"Rose.""

Daniel stared at the detective.

"Where is she now?""

"We don't know yet. The records show that Vanessa was granted temporary guardianship under circumstances that require further investigation. There is no complete file documenting what happened after that.""

"How can a child disappear into paperwork?""

Detective Morgan's expression remained grave.

"Poorly maintained records, incorrect filings, and fraudulent documentation can make cases difficult to trace. We're examining all of it.""

Daniel looked at Claire.

"Did you know Vanessa had your daughter?""

Claire shook her head.

"No. She told me Rose had died.""

Daniel's hands began to shake.

"Then why would she tell you that?""

Claire looked at him.

"Because she wanted me to stop looking.""

Rachel stepped closer.

"Claire, you said Vanessa took you away. How did you escape?""

Claire's eyes went distant.

"I remember a nurse. Her name was Margaret. She told me I had a daughter who needed me.""

"What did she mean?""

"I didn't understand at first. I thought she meant Lily. But then she showed me a newspaper clipping with your photograph, Daniel.""

Daniel frowned.

"My photograph?""

"You were standing outside a school with Lily. The headline said you were celebrating her first day of kindergarten.""

He remembered the photograph.

A local paper had run a small feature about families adjusting to the new school year. Vanessa had encouraged him to participate.

Claire continued.

"Margaret told me she thought Vanessa had lied about my family. She said she'd seen documents with different names and dates.""

"What happened to Margaret?""

"I don't know. The next day, she was gone.""

Detective Morgan made another note.

"Do you know the facility's name?""

Claire shook her head.

"No. But I remember a sign outside the building. It had the word 'Willow' in it.""

Daniel looked at the detective.

"Can you find it?""

"We'll follow up on that.""

Claire took a shaky breath.

"After Margaret disappeared, I found a key in my room. I don't know how it got there. I used it to open a service door and left.""

"Where did you go?"" Rachel asked.

"I went to the bus station. I had no money, no identification, and no clear memory of where I belonged. I remembered Rachel's name, so I tried to find her.""

Rachel began to cry.

"But I moved twice after you disappeared.""

"I know. I searched for you, but I couldn't remember your new address.""

Claire looked at Daniel.

"Eventually, I saw Vanessa's name in an old newspaper article. It said she had married you.""

Daniel looked away.

"I thought you were dead.""

"I know.""

Claire's voice was gentle.

"I'm not blaming you for what you believed. I'm telling you what happened to me.""

He looked back at her.

"Why didn't you come to the house?""

"I did.""

Daniel froze.

"What?""

Claire nodded.

"Three weeks ago. I stood across the street and watched Lily play in the garden.""

Daniel's breath caught.

"Why didn't you approach her?""

"Because Vanessa was there. She kept looking at the windows, as if she expected someone to be watching.""

Claire wiped her cheeks.

"I was afraid she would take Lily away before I could prove who I was.""

Daniel remembered that afternoon.

He had come home early and found Vanessa furious because Lily had spoken to a woman near the garden gate.

Vanessa had told him the woman was a stranger trying to frighten their daughter.

She had ordered the security cameras checked.

Daniel had dismissed the incident.

Now he felt sick.

"Did you speak to Lily?""

"Only for a moment.""

Claire looked toward the door.

"She was holding a flower. She asked whether I was lost.""

Daniel covered his face.

Claire's voice trembled.

"I told her I was looking for someone I loved.""

Rachel reached for her sister's hand.

"What happened next?""

"Vanessa came outside. She told Lily to go into the house, then threatened to call the police if I didn't leave.""

Claire lowered her eyes.

"I left because I didn't want Lily caught in the middle.""

Detective Morgan stood.

"We need to arrange for a formal identification and coordinate with child-protection professionals. We also need to establish where Rose is now.""

Daniel nodded.

"Please do whatever you need to do.""

He looked at Claire.

"If Rose is alive, I'll find her.""

Claire gripped his hand.

"Promise me something first.""

"What?""

"If Vanessa has raised her, don't assume Rose knows the truth. She may be frightened. She may believe everything Vanessa has told her.""

Daniel thought of Lily's empty lunchbox, her trembling hands, and her desperate fear that nobody would believe her.

"I understand.""

Claire's eyes filled.

"Then please don't let Rose suffer the way Lily has.""

For the first time since entering the police station, Daniel felt something besides fear.

Purpose.

Whatever had happened during those missing years, whatever secrets Vanessa had buried, he would not allow another child to be left alone with them.

But as Detective Morgan gathered the documents, an officer appeared at the doorway.

"Detective, we have a problem.""

Morgan turned.

"What is it?""

"The woman identified as Vanessa Carter has requested legal representation. She says the other woman is an impostor.""

"That's expected.""

The officer shook his head.

"She also says she can prove it.""

Daniel stood.

"How?""

The officer looked at the folder.

"She says she has DNA results proving that she is Lily's biological mother.""

Claire's face went white.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

Daniel looked at her.

"Why?""

May you like

Claire gripped the edge of the table.

"Because Vanessa was never pregnant.""
