Chapter 8: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Adrian stared at the photograph until his eyes burned.

The funeral.

The rain.

The black umbrellas.

The people who came to say goodbye to Emily.

And in the background…

Rachel Whitmore.

Alive.

Standing at the entrance.

Carrying the same red bag Mia had described.

The same woman Emily feared.

The same woman Vanessa claimed had died.

His first instinct was to reject it.

A mistake.

A similar face.

A misunderstanding.

Anything.

Because the alternative was impossible.

Rachel Whitmore had been declared dead years ago.

At least, that was what everyone believed.

Adrian immediately called Daniel.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel answered quickly.

“From archived photographs.””

“Who took it?””

“A guest’s camera. The family collected every photo after the funeral.””

Adrian zoomed in on the image.

“Are you sure this is Rachel?””

A pause.

“I compared it with old employment records.””

“And?””

“It’s her.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“How is that possible?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked back at the photograph.

“But I found something else.””

“What?””

“Rachel’s death certificate.””

Adrian waited.

“It was filed six months after Emily died.””

The information hit him like a wave.

Six months.

Not the same week.

Not the same time.

Six months later.

Vanessa had lied.

Or she had been lied to.

Either way, someone had hidden the truth.

“Send me everything.””

“I already did.””

The call ended.

Adrian stood alone in the elevator.

For fifteen years, Marcus had been his closest friend.

For years, Vanessa had been the woman he trusted with his daughter.

And now he was surrounded by people who knew pieces of the truth.

Everyone except him.

When he returned home, he found Vanessa sitting in the living room.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had aged years overnight.

She stood when she saw him.

“Did you find him?””

Adrian stopped.

“Who?””

Her expression changed.

“You know.””

“Say the name.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Rachel.””

The room became silent.

Adrian walked closer.

“You knew she was alive.””

“No.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

“I thought she was dead.””

“Then why did you recognize her name?””

Vanessa sat down.

“Because Emily told me.””

Adrian stared.

“What exactly did Emily tell you?””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“She came to me two weeks before she died.””

Adrian’s anger softened slightly.

“Why?””

“Because she was scared.””

“Of Rachel?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And Marcus.””

Adrian froze.

“You knew Marcus was involved?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I knew he was hiding something.””

“That’s not enough.””

“I know.””

She looked up.

“That’s why I hated myself.””

The confession surprised him.

“You hated yourself?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Because Emily trusted me with something important.””

Adrian waited.

“She asked me to watch Mia.””

The room went quiet.

“You were supposed to protect her?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And I failed.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Explain.””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Emily knew something was happening inside the company. She knew Marcus was moving money. She knew someone was trying to get control of Mia’s inheritance.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

“Because she thought you wouldn’t believe her.””

Adrian’s face changed.

“That’s not true.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Would you have believed her?””

The question hurt because he knew the answer.

At the time, he would have defended Marcus.

He would have said Emily was stressed.

He would have searched for another explanation.

Vanessa continued.

“Emily told me she needed time to collect proof.””

“And Rachel?””

“Rachel was helping her.””

Adrian looked confused.

“Helping her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Emily fear her?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Rachel discovered something.””

“What?””

“That Marcus was not working alone.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Who else?””

Vanessa looked toward the staircase.

Toward Mia’s room.

“I don’t know.””

Before Adrian could respond, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Mia walked inside holding a small envelope.

“Daddy?””

Adrian immediately moved toward her.

“What happened?””

She held up the envelope.

“This was under my pillow.””

His face changed.

“Under your pillow?””

Mia nodded.

“I thought it was from Mommy.””

Adrian took it carefully.

The envelope was old.

No name.

No return address.

His heart raced.

“Did anyone come into your room?””

Mia shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Then at the security cameras.

Again.

Someone had been close enough to leave something beside his daughter.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Emily’s handwriting.

But this one was different.

It looked rushed.

Like she had written it quickly.

*Adrian,*

*If Mia found this, then the person I feared has already started moving.*

His hands tightened.

He continued reading.

*Please do not trust anyone who tells you the truth is simple. It is not.*

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

Then back at the letter.

**Vanessa made mistakes. She was jealous. She was insecure.

But she loved Mia. Do not punish her for being imperfect.**

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Tears filled her eyes.

The letter continued.

*The person who destroyed our family knows exactly how to make people look guilty.*

A pause.

Then:

*The biggest danger is not the person who wants money.*

Adrian read the next line slowly.

*It is the person who wants control.*

His stomach tightened.

Then came the final sentence.

*Adrian, look at who benefits from my death.*

The letter ended.

No signature.

No explanation.

Only one small mark at the bottom.

A symbol.

Daniel had mentioned it before.

The same symbol from the company documents.

A circle with a line through it.

Adrian looked at Vanessa.

“Have you seen this before?””

She nodded slowly.

“Once.””

“When?””

“The night Emily died.””

The room froze.

Adrian stepped closer.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice became barely audible.

“Marcus had it.””

A cold silence followed.

“Marcus had Emily’s symbol?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Because it wasn’t just Emily’s symbol.””

“What was it?””

She swallowed.

“It belonged to a private group.””

Adrian stared.

“What group?””

Vanessa looked at the letter.

Then at Mia.

Then whispered:

“The group that controlled Marcus before he ever met you.””

Adrian felt the pieces finally connecting.

Rachel.

Marcus.

The stolen documents.

The inheritance.

Emily’s warnings.

But one question remained.

Who was really behind everything?

That night, Adrian did something he had avoided for years.

He opened Emily’s old belongings.

Not because he wanted memories.

Because he needed answers.

Inside an old box, beneath photographs and letters, he found a small notebook.

Emily’s handwriting filled every page.

Names.

Dates.

Financial records.

And one name circled repeatedly.

Marcus Hale.

But on the last page, there was something new.

A name Adrian had never seen.

A name Emily had written just once.

Underneath it, she had written:

*The person who introduced Marcus to our family.*

Adrian stared.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

“Who is this?””

Silence.

Then a familiar voice whispered:

“You should have listened to Emily.””

Adrian froze.

Because he knew that voice.

It was impossible.

It couldn’t be real.

The voice belonged to someone who had been dead for years.

Rachel Whitmore.

Then the call ended.

And a message appeared.

*Meet me where Emily spent her last night alive. Come alone.*

Adrian stared at the screen.

The location appeared beneath the message.

The hospital.

The same hospital where Emily died.

May you like

And beneath the address was one final sentence.

*If you want to know who killed your wife, ask the person who watched her take her last breath.*
