Chapter 6: The Shadow Inside the House
Adrian stared at the photograph on his phone.
For a moment, he couldn’t understand what he was seeing.
Then his eyes adjusted.
The image was dark, grainy, and clearly taken from a distance.
But there was no mistake.
It was Mia.
Sleeping peacefully in her bed.
Her stuffed rabbit rested beside her.
The pink ribbon from the performance sat on her nightstand.
Someone had taken that picture inside his house.
Inside his daughter’s bedroom.
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the phone.
“When was this taken?””
Nobody answered.
“WHEN?””
His voice shook the room.
Vanessa stepped back.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
He looked around.
“At this moment, I don’t care about money. I don’t care about the documents. I don’t care about anyone’s excuses.””
His eyes turned toward the staircase.
“Someone was near my daughter while she slept.””
The fear on his face was no longer hidden.
It was the fear of a father.
Lucas immediately moved toward the hallway.
“We need to check the house.””
Adrian followed.
“Now.””
The mansion suddenly felt different.
It was the same place.
The same walls.
The same rooms.
But every corner now felt like a place where someone could hide.
The security staff were called.
Doors were checked.
Windows were inspected.
Every camera feed was reviewed.
But nothing appeared unusual.
No forced entry.
No unknown person recorded.
No sign of anyone breaking in.
That made Adrian even more nervous.
Because if nobody entered…
Someone had already been inside.
He stood in the security room watching the camera footage.
“Play the hallway recordings from tonight.””
The security guard nodded.
“Yes, sir.””
The screen filled with images.
The hallway outside Mia’s bedroom.
Empty.
Quiet.
Then Adrian noticed something.
“Stop.””
The guard froze the video.
“What is it?””
Adrian leaned closer.
The timestamp showed 2:14 a.m.
The hallway was empty.
But the camera flickered.
Only for a second.
Then the image returned.
“Why did it glitch?””
The guard looked confused.
“I don’t know, sir.””
“Check the previous nights.””
They searched.
The same glitch happened again.
Every night.
Same time.
Same camera.
Adrian looked at Lucas.
“Someone disabled the camera.””
Lucas nodded slowly.
“Someone who knew the system.””
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Someone who lives here.””
The words were heavy.
Behind them, Vanessa stood silently.
Adrian noticed.
“You knew about the cameras.””
She looked at him.
“Everyone in this house knows about the cameras.””
“Not everyone knows how to manipulate them.””
Her expression changed.
“You think it was me?””
“I think I don’t know who to trust.””
That answer hurt her.
But Adrian didn’t take it back.
A few minutes later, Adrian went upstairs.
Mia was still asleep.
He opened the door slowly.
The small nightlight beside her bed created a warm glow.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
He walked closer.
She looked so peaceful.
So innocent.
She had no idea how many adults had failed her.
Adrian sat beside her bed.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Mia opened her eyes slightly.
“Daddy?””
He froze.
“I thought you were asleep.””
She rubbed her eyes.
“Are you leaving?””
“No.””
He smiled.
“I’m right here.””
She reached for his hand.
“Promise?””
The question hit him.
Because it was the same question she asked before her performance.
The same question she asked when she needed security.
“I promise.””
She held his hand until she fell asleep again.
Adrian stayed there.
Watching.
Protecting.
And thinking.
The next morning, Daniel arrived at the mansion.
He brought a folder.
“I found something.””
Adrian sat across from him in his office.
“What?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“Rachel Whitmore.””
The name immediately changed the atmosphere.
“She wasn’t just connected to Marcus.””
Adrian frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She worked for your company.””
Adrian looked surprised.
“When?””
“Eight years ago.””
“That’s impossible. I would remember.””
“She was an outside consultant.””
Daniel placed a document on the desk.
“She handled risk assessments.””
Adrian looked through the papers.
Rachel’s name appeared on several reports.
Then he saw something.
A signature.
His.
But he didn’t remember signing that document.
“What is this?””
Daniel pointed.
“Authorization for a private financial review.””
“I never requested this.””
“That’s the problem.””
Adrian stared.
“Someone used your approval.””
A cold silence followed.
“Who had access?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Three people.””
Adrian already knew.
“Tell me.””
“Marcus Hale.””
A pause.
“Vanessa Carter.””
Another pause.
“And Emily Carter.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Emily?””
Daniel nodded.
“Your wife’s signature appears because she discovered the review and tried to continue it after you stopped.””
Adrian looked down.
“I stopped it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Because the request was presented to you as unnecessary.””
“By who?””
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
Adrian already knew.
“Marcus.””
Daniel nodded.
The pieces were connecting.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Marcus had been close to him.
Close enough to influence decisions.
Close enough to make Adrian doubt his own wife.
“What did Emily find?””
Daniel opened another file.
“According to Rachel’s records, there were irregular payments from company accounts.””
“To where?””
“Several shell companies.””
“And the owners?””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“That’s where it gets strange.””
“What?””
“The companies were registered under different names.””
“Whose names?””
Daniel pushed a document forward.
Adrian read it.
His expression changed.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
*Vanessa Carter.*
He looked up.
“So Vanessa was involved.””
Daniel nodded.
“On paper.””
“That’s not enough.””
“No.””
Daniel agreed.
“It isn’t.””
Adrian looked frustrated.
“She admitted Marcus used her name.””
“Did she?””
Adrian looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel leaned forward.
“I’m saying Vanessa may be telling the truth.””
Adrian was silent.
“Why?””
“Because someone was trying to make it look like Vanessa was responsible.””
The room became quiet.
Adrian thought about everything.
The trust account.
The documents.
The photo.
The camera.
The ruined performance.
Someone wanted him to hate Vanessa.
But why?
Because anger made people careless.
And someone wanted him distracted.
A knock interrupted them.
Adrian looked up.
It was Mia.
She stood at the door holding a small box.
“Daddy?””
He immediately softened.
“Come in.””
She walked inside.
“I found this.””
She placed the box on his desk.
“What is it?””
“Mommy’s things.””
Adrian looked surprised.
“Where did you get it?””
“In my closet.””
He opened the box carefully.
Inside were old drawings.
Photos.
Small memories.
Then he saw something hidden underneath.
A tiny recorder.
Adrian looked at Mia.
“Where did this come from?””
She shrugged.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked serious.
“Adrian…”
Adrian picked it up.
The recorder was old.
But it still had a button.
He pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a familiar voice.
Emily.
Adrian stopped breathing.
“My darling Adrian…”
His eyes closed.
Mia smiled.
“That’s Mommy.””
The recording continued.
“If you are hearing this, then I was right to be afraid.””
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Nobody moved.
Emily’s voice continued.
“I need you to understand something. The person you should fear is not the person who looks guilty.””
Adrian felt a chill.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
“Someone will try to make you believe Vanessa betrayed us.””
Vanessa.
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“But Vanessa is not the enemy.””
Adrian stared at the recorder.
The woman he had spent hours questioning.
The woman he thought might have hurt his daughter.
Emily’s voice became weaker.
“She made mistakes. She made selfish choices. But she is not the person who destroyed our family.””
A pause.
Then:
“The person who did that is someone Adrian trusts completely.””
The recording crackled.
Then Emily whispered:
“Someone who was at my funeral.””
The recorder clicked.
Silence.
Adrian looked at Daniel.
Then at Mia.
Then toward the window.
Because suddenly there was only one question left.
May you like
Who had been standing beside him at Emily’s funeral?
And why had Emily been afraid of them?
