Chapter 5: The Truth Behind Emily’s Last Days
Adrian read the words again.
Then again.
His mind refused to accept them.
*She knows why I am dying.*
The sentence looked impossible.
Cruel.
Like someone had taken the worst moment of his life and carved a new mystery into it.
Emily had died from complications after a sudden illness.
That was the story he had lived with for years.
The story doctors had given him.
The story everyone repeated.
But now, standing in his own living room, with a photograph of Vanessa outside Emily’s hospital room, Adrian felt the ground beneath him shift.
He slowly lowered the picture.
“Explain.””
Vanessa looked pale.
“I can’t.””
Adrian stared at her.
“That is not an answer.””
“I don’t know what Emily meant.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“Yes.””
Her voice cracked.
For the first time since he had known her, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Afraid.
Adrian noticed.
And that frightened him even more.
Lucas stepped forward.
“There’s something you need to know.””
Adrian turned.
“You have been saying that all night.””
“Because Emily left pieces of the truth behind.””
“Pieces?””
Lucas nodded.
“She was investigating something before she died.””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“Investigating Vanessa?””
“No.””
Lucas paused.
“Investigating someone connected to her.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Lucas.””
He ignored her.
Adrian noticed the hesitation.
“What are you not telling me?””
Lucas took a breath.
“Emily believed someone was trying to manipulate her medical records.””
The room went completely still.
Adrian’s fingers tightened around the photograph.
“My wife was sick.””
“Yes.””
“Are you saying her illness wasn’t real?””
“No.””
Lucas shook his head.
“Emily was sick. That part was real.””
“Then what?””
“She believed someone was hiding information about why her condition became worse so quickly.””
Adrian stared.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Lucas looked away.
“Because Emily asked me not to.””
That answer made Adrian angry.
“She asked you to keep secrets from me?””
“She was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
His voice rose.
“Protect me from what?””
Nobody answered.
The silence was the answer.
Adrian walked toward the window.
The same window where he had watched Mia play outside earlier.
His daughter.
The little girl who had been made to feel like her own voice didn’t matter.
Now he was discovering that adults had been hiding things from him for years.
“How long did Emily know?””
Lucas spoke quietly.
“About two months before she passed away.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
Two months.
Two months of hospital visits.
Two months of holding Emily’s hand.
Two months of believing there were no secrets.
He remembered those nights.
Emily would wake up and look at him.
“You’re tired,” he would say.
She would smile.
“I’m okay.””
He thought she was comforting him.
Now he wondered if she was saying goodbye.
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“I need to tell you something.””
Adrian turned.
“Finally.””
She swallowed.
“I did visit Emily in the hospital.””
“I know.””
“You don’t know why.””
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
Her confidence was gone.
“I went because Emily called me.””
Adrian frowned.
“Why would Emily call you?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Because she knew I had access to information.””
“What information?””
“About someone.””
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Adrian’s patience disappeared.
“Vanessa.””
She looked up.
“Your business partner.””
Adrian froze.
“What?””
Lucas looked at him.
“You didn’t know?””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Know what?””
Vanessa looked between them.
“Emily thought there was something wrong with Marcus.””
The name hit harder than expected.
Marcus Hale.
Adrian’s longtime business partner.
The man who had helped him build his company.
The man who stood beside him at Emily’s funeral.
The man who had called Mia “little princess” since she was born.
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“Marcus has been my friend for fifteen years.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why would Emily suspect him?””
“Because money started moving.””
Adrian went silent.
“What money?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Company money.””
The room felt colder.
Adrian had spent years trusting Marcus with major financial decisions.
He remembered the conversations.
The handshakes.
The promises.
The late nights building their company.
Could he really have missed something?
“Where is the proof?””
Lucas answered.
“Emily found records.””
“Records of what?””
“Payments.””
“To who?””
Lucas looked at Vanessa.
Then at Adrian.
“To accounts connected to people around you.””
Adrian stared.
“Connected to Vanessa?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Her voice was almost a whisper.
“Connected to me.””
That confession changed everything.
Adrian stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked devastated.
“It means Marcus used my name.””
“How?””
“He created accounts under my information.””
“Why?””
“I don’t know.””
Adrian laughed once.
A bitter, empty sound.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I don’t expect you to trust me.””
“Good.””
“But I’m telling you the truth.””
She looked at him.
“I made mistakes. I was jealous. I was selfish. I handled Mia’s situation terribly.””
Her eyes filled.
“But I did not hurt Emily.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian asked:
“Why did Emily write that sentence?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“Because she thought I knew something.””
“Did you?””
A long silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“You did?””
“I knew Marcus was hiding something.””
The words landed heavily.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because he threatened me.””
Lucas immediately looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“He told me if I said anything, he would make sure everyone believed I was trying to steal from Mia.””
Adrian stared.
“And then?””
“And then after Emily died, he told me to stay close to your family.””
Adrian’s heart sank.
“Why?””
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“Because he said Mia’s inheritance would eventually become available.””
The room became silent.
The horrible truth was slowly forming.
This had never been about a hairstyle.
It had never been about a school performance.
Mia’s ruined hair had been the first visible crack in a much larger plan.
A plan involving money.
Trust.
And people Adrian had welcomed into his home.
Suddenly, a small voice came from behind them.
“Daddy?””
Everyone turned.
Mia stood on the staircase.
Again.
She had heard too much.
Adrian immediately moved toward her.
“Mia.””
She looked scared.
“Is Vanessa bad?””
Nobody answered.
Because the truth was complicated.
And six-year-olds should not have to carry complicated truths.
Adrian picked her up.
“No matter what happens, you are safe.””
Mia held onto him.
“Did she make Mommy sad?””
The question froze everyone.
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa looked away.
Then Mia whispered:
“Mommy cried a lot before she went away.””
Adrian’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Mia buried her face against his shoulder.
“I heard her talking.””
“When?””
“Before the hospital.””
Adrian’s voice softened.
“What did she say?””
Mia hesitated.
“She said…”
The little girl looked toward the floor.
“She said she was scared someone would take me away.””
Adrian felt his entire body go cold.
“Who?””
Mia shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“But Mommy didn’t like the lady who came to our house.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“What lady?””
Mia’s eyes narrowed as she tried to remember.
“She had a red bag.””
Nobody moved.
Vanessa suddenly stood.
“What did she look like?””
The urgency in her voice surprised everyone.
Mia looked at her.
“She had dark hair.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Anything else?””
Mia nodded slowly.
“She called Mommy by her first name.””
Adrian looked at Lucas.
“Who was she?””
Lucas didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
And the fear on his face told Adrian that this mystery had just become much bigger.
Finally, Lucas whispered:
“The woman Emily was afraid of.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Name.””
Lucas looked at the photograph in Adrian’s hand.
Then he said:
“Her name was Rachel Whitmore.””
A name Adrian had never heard before.
But Vanessa had.
Because the moment she heard it, all the color left her face.
And she whispered:
“She’s dead.””
Adrian looked at her.
“What?””
Vanessa stared toward the dark hallway.
“Rachel Whitmore died the same week Emily did.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian’s phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Stop searching for the truth, Adrian. Emily died because she searched too.*
And below it was a photograph.
A photograph taken inside the Carter mansion.
