Thinking

Chapter 2: The Hidden Recording

The room remained silent as Adrian stood in front of the television screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was Mia’s quiet crying as she held onto her father’s hand.

The security system in the Carter mansion was designed to protect expensive artwork, valuable belongings, and the privacy of the family.

But that afternoon, the cameras were about to reveal something much more important.

The truth.

Adrian pressed a button on the remote.

The large screen flickered.

The guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Vanessa stood near the sofa, her arms crossed, trying to appear calm.

But Adrian noticed everything.

The way she avoided looking at the screen.

The way her fingers kept touching the bracelet around her wrist.

The way she kept swallowing as if she was trying to force down panic.

“Adrian,” Vanessa said quietly, “is this really necessary?””

He didn’t look at her.

“Yes.””

“It was an accident.””

“Then the camera will prove that.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re making me look like a criminal in front of everyone.””

Adrian finally turned.

“No one said that.””

“You’re acting like you already believe her.””

Adrian looked down at Mia.

His daughter’s cheeks were still wet with tears.

Then he looked back at Vanessa.

“I believe my daughter deserves to be heard.””

The words hit the room harder than anyone expected.

Mia squeezed his hand.

The screen changed.

The security footage from the living room appeared.

The image was silent at first.

Everyone watched.

On the screen, Mia sat in front of the mirror, smiling.

Even without sound, everyone could see how happy she was.

She touched her pink ribbon.

She adjusted her dress.

She looked like a child waiting for the most important moment of her life.

Adrian’s expression softened.

Then Vanessa appeared behind her.

The room became tense.

The footage continued.

Mia laughed at something Vanessa said.

She looked completely comfortable.

She trusted her.

That was the part that hurt Adrian the most.

His daughter had trusted the woman standing behind her.

The woman who was supposed to protect her.

The video continued.

Vanessa picked up the brush.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then Adrian leaned closer.

His eyes narrowed.

Something had changed.

On the screen, Mia’s smile faded.

She touched her hair.

She said something.

Then Vanessa’s hand stopped moving.

The guests watched closely.

The sound was finally turned on.

A small speaker near the television came alive.

“Mia, you need to understand something.””

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

The real voice.

Not the gentle version she used around others.

The room became colder.

On the screen, six-year-old Mia looked confused.

“Understand what?””

Vanessa looked around the room in the footage, even though nobody was there.

Then she leaned closer.

“Your father has been too focused on you lately.””

Adrian froze.

Everyone looked at him.

The footage continued.

Mia frowned.

“But Daddy loves me.””

Vanessa smiled.

A smile that made Adrian’s stomach tighten.

“Yes, sweetheart. He does.””

A pause.

“But sometimes people get tired.””

Mia’s face changed.

“No, he won’t.””

Vanessa continued brushing.

“You think he wants to spend every weekend at school events? Every night reading bedtime stories?””

The little girl’s eyes lowered.

“He promised.””

Vanessa’s hand stopped.

Then came the sentence that made the entire room go silent.

“Promises change.””

Adrian’s face became expressionless.

But inside, something broke.

He remembered that night.

Mia had asked him if he would be there.

She had asked because she was afraid he might forget.

And he promised.

The footage continued.

Mia looked toward the mirror.

“My daddy always keeps his promises.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Then she placed the brush down.

“You know what happens when little girls become too demanding?””

Mia turned around.

“I’m not demanding.””

“Yes, you are.””

The guests looked horrified.

Nobody interrupted.

Nobody could.

Because they were finally seeing what Mia had experienced.

Vanessa reached toward the scissors.

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

The single word came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

Mia looked up at him.

The footage continued.

On the screen, Vanessa lifted the scissors.

Mia noticed.

“Why do you have those?””

Vanessa answered calmly.

“Because your hair needs fixing.””

“No, I like it.””

“Mia.””

“I don’t want it cut.””

The scissors moved.

Not an accident.

Not a mistake.

Not a sudden movement.

Everyone watched.

Vanessa deliberately cut several strands.

Mia gasped.

The guests in the room reacted immediately.

One woman covered her mouth.

Another whispered, “Oh my God.””

Adrian didn’t move.

He stared at the screen.

The footage continued.

Mia touched her hair.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Why did you do that?””

Vanessa looked at her reflection.

And then she said something nobody expected.

“Because sometimes people need to learn they aren’t always the center of attention.””

The room exploded with silence.

Adrian slowly turned away from the screen.

His face was controlled.

Too controlled.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Adrian, wait.””

Nobody answered.

She walked closer.

“It’s not what it looks like.””

He looked at her.

The woman who had spent months living in his home.

The woman he had trusted around his daughter.

“Then what does it look like?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Adrian pointed toward the screen.

“You told everyone she moved.””

“I was angry.””

“You lied.””

“I panicked.””

“You blamed her.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“I made one mistake.””

Adrian looked at Mia.

“One mistake?””

His voice became quieter.

“She spent the last hour thinking nobody believed her.””

Mia looked down.

The words hurt because they were true.

Adrian knelt beside her.

“Mia.””

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

Her face changed.

“For what?””

“For not seeing it sooner.””

Mia shook her head quickly.

“No, Daddy.””

“Yes.””

He gently wiped a tear from her cheek.

“You told the truth.””

The little girl looked at him.

“I thought everyone was mad at me.””

Adrian pulled her into his arms.

“No one should ever make you feel afraid to tell me something.””

Across the room, Vanessa watched them.

Her expression was impossible to read.

But Clara noticed something.

Vanessa wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t apologizing.

She was thinking.

And that worried Clara.

After everyone left, the mansion became quiet again.

The guests had gone home.

The staff had returned to their work.

But the feeling inside the house had changed.

Adrian sat in his office with Mia beside him.

She was coloring quietly at his desk.

A small drawing sat between them.

It showed three people holding hands.

Adrian.

Mia.

And a blank space.

He looked at it.

“Who is that?””

Mia shrugged.

“I don’t know yet.””

The answer hurt more than he expected.

His phone suddenly rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was his lawyer.

“Hello?””

The voice on the other end sounded serious.

“Adrian, I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Are you aware that Vanessa has been accessing your family records?””

Adrian frowned.

“What records?””

There was a pause.

Then the lawyer spoke.

“Your daughter’s trust account.””

Adrian stood up.

Mia looked at him.

“What’s wrong, Daddy?””

He forced a calm expression.

“Nothing, sweetheart.””

But he knew something was wrong.

Very wrong.

“Why would Vanessa be looking at Mia’s account?”” he asked.

The lawyer hesitated.

“Because someone recently tried to make changes.””

Adrian’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What kind of changes?””

The lawyer took a breath.

“Changes that could affect who controls your daughter’s inheritance.””

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

Toward the part of the mansion where Vanessa had disappeared.

And for the first time, he wondered if cutting Mia’s hair had never been about the performance at all.

Maybe it was about something much bigger.

Something Vanessa had been planning long before today.

Then his lawyer said one final sentence that made Adrian’s blood run cold.

“Adrian… there’s another name attached to the request.””

“Whose name?””

A long pause.

May you like

Then the lawyer answered.

“Your late wife’s brother.””
