Chapter 17 - THE LETTER

Two months later, a letter arrived.

It came from the detention center where Elena was being held awaiting trial. The envelope was plain. The handwriting was shaky and unfamiliar.

I sat at the kitchen table and opened it alone.

*“Dear Adrian,”*

*“I am writing this because I do not know if I will be able to say these things to your face. I have been given a lawyer. He tells me I may receive a reduced sentence if I cooperate fully and show remorse. But remorse is not enough to give back what I have broken.”*

*“I thought if I could just take the money… I would finally be enough. I would finally matter. I thought everyone would see that I was worthy of respect. That I deserved to be looked upon the way everyone looked at Claire.”*

*“I was wrong. Money does not make you worthy. Taking what is not yours does not make you important. And hurting the people who love you… leaves scars that can never be healed.”*

*“I am sorry for what I did to Sophie. I am sorry for bringing Vanessa into your home. I am sorry for the fear I put you through. I am sorry for the lies. For the forgeries. For everything.”*

*“Claire was right about me. She knew exactly what I was. She hid that bear because she knew I would never understand what a mother’s love really is. She knew I only saw things to be taken. She was protecting her daughter. And I tried to destroy that protection.”*

*“I will understand if you never speak to me again. I will understand if you tell Sophie nothing of me but that I made mistakes. I will not ask you to visit. I will not ask for forgiveness. I only ask that you tell her… tell her I am truly sorry. And tell her to be strong. Because she is braver than I ever was.”*

*“I will spend the rest of my life trying to make amends. Even if I can never make things right. I will try.”*

*“Yours with deepest regret,”*

*“Elena.”*

I folded the letter slowly and set it down.

Tears rolled down my face. Not of anger. Not of hatred. But of profound, aching sadness. For the sister I had lost. For the woman she could have been. For the jealousy that had eaten her alive.

Claire had known Elena’s heart better than Elena had known it herself. She had known that her sister was driven by pain and hunger that would never be satisfied.

And she had protected Sophie. Not just with evidence. But with the lesson hidden inside a simple teddy bear: that the most precious things in the world are not meant to be stolen. They are meant to be loved.
