Chapter 15 - ARRIVAL AND LOSS

Fifteen minutes later, headlights swept across the cabin walls.
Elena did not run. She did not try to fight. She sat there quietly, shoulders shaking, while the police walked through the broken door.
I handed over the USB drive. I handed over the documents. And Sophie walked forward and placed the folded note from Claire into the lead officer’s hand.
“Mommy wrote this,” she told him solemnly. “It tells the truth.”
The officer looked at the note. At Elena. At the bruises I had already photographed and submitted days before.
He stepped forward and spoke gently.
“Elena… we have enough to take you into custody. For questioning. For fraud. For conspiracy to commit theft.”
Elena stood up slowly. She looked at me one last time. Her eyes were red and hollow.
“Will you visit me?” she asked, her voice barely audible. “Will you come… once you are not angry anymore?”
I looked at her. At the sister I had known since childhood. At the woman who had almost destroyed everything I loved.
“I don’t know,” I said honestly. “I need time, Elena. A great deal of time.”
She nodded as if she had expected nothing less. They placed handcuffs on her wrists. She did not resist. As they led her out to the car, she paused and looked back at Sophie.
“I am sorry, little one,” she whispered. “More than I can ever say.”
Sophie stood beside me, holding the bear tight. She did not look away.
“I know,” she said. “But sorry doesn’t fix everything.”
Elena bowed her head and walked to the car.
When the police drove away, taking my sister with them, the cabin fell into silence.
The door hung broken from its frame. The room was a mess. But Sophie was safe. The proof was in the right hands. And Claire’s voice—from beyond the grave—had finally been heard.
I sank into a chair, suddenly exhausted.
Sophie climbed into my lap. She smoothed the fur of her bear gently.
“It’s over now, Daddy?”
I kissed the top of her head.
“It is over, sweetheart. We are safe.”
May you like
“Mommy’s bear helped.”
“Yes,” I said, tears stinging my eyes. “It did. More than any of us will ever know.”
