Chapter 13 - THE HEART OF THE BEAR

Silence crashed into the room.

Elena stared at Sophie. Sophie stared at Elena. The drive lay forgotten on the table between us.

Slowly, Elena straightened up. She smoothed her coat. She tried to pull that gentle mask back into place, but her hands were shaking too hard.

“Sophie,” she said, her voice trembling. “Sweetheart… go back to bed. Everything is fine.”

Sophie took a small step forward. She looked at the broken door. At the crowbar on the floor. At me, breathing hard, clutching the poker.

Then she looked at Elena.

“Did you break our door?”

Elena hesitated.

“It was… an accident. I was worried. I wanted to see you.”

“You hurt Daddy,” Sophie said. It was not a question.

“I did not hurt him. We were just… talking.”

Sophie shook her head. She walked around the table, not toward Elena, but toward me. She reached up and took my free hand in both of hers. Her small fingers were warm and steady.

“Mommy told me about you,” she said, looking straight at Elena. “She told me you wanted to take things that weren’t yours. She told me to be careful.”

Elena paled.

“Sophie… honey… Aunt Elena loves you. I would never hurt you.”

“Then why did you send Vanessa to take my bear?” Sophie asked. “Why did she pull my hair? Why did she throw my bear in the trash?”

Elena opened her mouth. No words came out. She looked from Sophie’s face to the bear in her arms.

And then she understood.

She had spent months searching safes, drawers, files, desks. She had sent Vanessa to tear apart every room in this house. She had paid forgeries, lied, manipulated, threatened…

And all along… the proof had been sitting in a child’s arms.

“You knew,” Elena whispered, staring at the bear. “All this time… you knew.”

“Mommy told me,” Sophie said. “She said Mr. Bear has a heart. And I must never let anyone take it. Not anyone.”

She reached into the bear’s open seam and pulled out the folded piece of paper Claire had written. She held it up.

“The heart is the truth,” Sophie said. “And the truth belongs to me.”

Elena stared at the paper. Then at the USB drive still lying on the table. She realized then… Claire had hidden two things. One for the adults to find. And one for Sophie to keep.

Claire had known Elena would find the drive eventually. But she had also known that Elena would never believe a child held the most important piece of all.

Elena swayed on her feet.

“Give it to me, Sophie,” she said, her voice breaking. “Please. Just hand it to me. I need it.”

“No,” Sophie said simply. “It’s mine. Mommy gave it to me.”
