Chapter 16 - AFTERMATH

The weeks that followed were a blur of lawyers, phone calls, and news reports.
Elena was formally charged. She confessed to everything—the forgeries, the conspiracy, recruiting Vanessa, the months of planning. She told investigators exactly how she had copied our signatures, how she had introduced Vanessa into my life, how she had directed the search for the bear.
She said she had never intended for anyone to get hurt. She said Vanessa had acted alone in tearing the bear and hurting Sophie. She said she had been horrified when she found out.
The police arrested Vanessa too. Charges of assault and conspiracy were filed against her. Both women would face trial. Both would have to answer for what they had done.
Marcus and Lila stood by me through it all. They helped me repair the cabin. They helped me sort through the legal paperwork. They visited often, bringing meals and comfort.
But nothing could fill the empty space Elena had left behind. Not the comfort of family, not the certainty of justice, not even Sophie’s smiling face.
I had lost my sister. Not to death. But to the choices she had made. To the greed and jealousy that had eaten away at her until there was nothing left but shadows.
One afternoon, nearly a month later, I sat on the porch of the cabin with Sophie. The bear sat between us, its seam neatly mended, its blue ribbon washed and retied.
The drive was in a safe place now. The documents were filed. Claire’s wishes were legally secured. Sophie’s inheritance was protected.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, baby?”
“Is Aunt Elena going to come back?”
I looked out at the trees.
“Not for a very long time, Sophie.”
“Will you forgive her?”
I thought about that. About the bruises on my daughter’s arms. About the fear I had felt. About Claire’s warning.
“Forgiveness is something people earn,” I said. “It takes time. And it takes change. I want to forgive her. But I cannot… not yet.”
Sophie nodded as if she understood far more than any five-year-old should have to.
“Mommy said people have to be good inside. Not just look good.”
“Your mommy was a very wise woman.”

Sophie picked up the bear and hugged it.
“Mr. Bear is safe now. And so are we.”
