Chapter 5: Veronica’s Confession

The courtroom felt different when we walked back in.

Before, Benjamin’s family had entered like royalty.

Now they looked like people waiting for a verdict they couldn’t control.

Dorothy sat perfectly straight.

But her fingers were clenched around her purse.

Benjamin sat beside his attorney, staring at the floor.

And Veronica…

Veronica looked terrified.

The woman who had once smiled at me like she had already won was now pale and shaking.

Judge Hawkins returned to the bench.

“Before we continue, I have been informed that additional evidence may be submitted.””

Richard Blake immediately stood.

“Your Honor, we object.””

Judge Hawkins looked at him.

“On what grounds?””

“We have not had time to review this material.””

She glanced at the clock.

“Neither has anyone else.””

Richard lowered himself back into his seat.

The judge looked toward Veronica.

“Ms. Hale, you requested to provide testimony?””

Veronica stood.

Her expensive confidence was gone.

“Yes, Your Honor.””

Benjamin looked at her.

“Veronica.””

She didn’t meet his eyes.

That hurt him.

I could see it.

Not because he loved her.

Because he finally realized she wasn’t his ally.

She was saving herself.

Judge Hawkins motioned.

“Proceed.””

Veronica walked forward.

Her heels clicked against the courtroom floor.

Each step sounded louder than it should have.

“I need to correct some statements that were made earlier.””

Richard frowned.

“Such as?””

Veronica looked directly at him.

“Such as the idea that Emma Carter was financially dependent on Benjamin.””

The courtroom became quiet.

My heart moved slightly.

Not because I trusted Veronica.

Because hearing someone finally say it out loud mattered.

“She wasn’t.””

Benjamin looked at her.

Veronica continued.

“She helped build Carter Innovations.””

Richard stood.

“Objection. This witness has personal involvement and obvious bias.””

Judge Hawkins raised a hand.

“Overruled.””

Veronica took a breath.

“I worked with Benjamin for six years.””

Her voice shook.

“And during that time, I saw everything.””

She looked at me.

“Emma created the original campaign that brought in the company’s first major clients.””

I remembered those nights.

The dining room table covered in papers.

Benjamin sleeping beside his laptop.

Me designing strategies until sunrise.

“She created the brand identity,” Veronica said.

“She built the client presentation that convinced investors.””

She paused.

“And Benjamin took credit.””

Benjamin closed his eyes.

I watched his reaction.

Not anger.

Shame.

Veronica continued.

“At first, I didn’t know.””

The judge leaned forward.

“Didn’t know what?””

“That Dorothy was manipulating the company finances.””

Dorothy’s face hardened.

“Careful.””

Veronica flinched.

But she kept going.

“She recruited me.””

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Dorothy’s attorney stood.

“This is absurd.””

Judge Hawkins struck the gavel.

“Silence.””

Veronica looked at Dorothy.

“She told me Benjamin was trapped in a marriage that held him back.””

My stomach twisted.

“She said Emma was only interested in his money.””

Dorothy’s expression didn’t move.

“She promised me that once Benjamin divorced Emma, I would become part of the family.””

A bitter smile crossed Veronica’s face.

“But I wasn’t the first woman she tried to use.””

Everyone looked at Dorothy.

Judge Hawkins narrowed her eyes.

“Explain.””

Veronica swallowed.

“Dorothy created the separation between Benjamin and Emma.””

Benjamin looked up.

“What?””

Veronica turned toward him.

“She knew you were unhappy. She encouraged you to spend more time away from home.””

His face changed.

“She told me Emma was holding me back.””

A painful silence followed.

Because Benjamin was hearing the truth too.

Not from me.

From the person he trusted after destroying our marriage.

Veronica continued.

“But I found out why.””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a folder.

My breath caught.

Michael immediately stood.

“Your Honor, may I approach?””

Judge Hawkins nodded.

He walked forward.

Veronica handed him the folder.

The judge reviewed the contents.

Then her expression changed.

“What are these?””

Veronica answered quietly.

“Documents showing Dorothy transferred company funds into accounts controlled by her.””

Richard went pale.

Benjamin stared at his mother.

“No.””

Dorothy’s voice became sharp.

“She’s lying.””

Veronica shook her head.

“You told me to help hide the transfers.””

The courtroom froze.

Benjamin looked at Dorothy.

“Is that true?””

Dorothy didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

For the first time, the powerful woman who had controlled every room she entered looked powerless.

Judge Hawkins reviewed the documents.

“Mr. Carter, did you know about these transfers?””

Benjamin looked broken.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

“No, I didn’t.””

Judge Hawkins looked at him.

“Then why did you create the separate account?””

Everyone waited.

Benjamin looked at me.

And I saw something I hadn’t seen in years.

The truth.

“I found out my mother was moving money.””

A silence.

“I confronted her.””

He continued.

“She told me if I exposed her, she would destroy everything.””

Dorothy’s expression changed.

“You ungrateful boy.””

Benjamin looked at her.

“You threatened my wife.””

Dorothy laughed.

“Your wife?””

The cruelty returned.

“She was temporary.””

That sentence landed harder than anything else.

Because Benjamin finally heard what I had heard for years.

The Carter family never saw people.

They saw assets.

They saw weaknesses.

They saw tools.

Judge Hawkins looked at the documents again.

“This hearing will require further investigation.””

Richard started to object.

But she stopped him.

“However, I want everyone to understand something.””

Her eyes moved around the room.

“The evidence presented today changes the nature of this case.””

She looked at Benjamin.

“Mr. Carter, you entered this courtroom claiming your wife contributed nothing.””

Then she looked at me.

“That claim is no longer supported.””

A strange emotion moved through me.

Not victory.

Not yet.

Something quieter.

Validation.

For months, they had made me question my own worth.

Now the truth was sitting on the same table where they tried to erase me.

Judge Hawkins scheduled the next hearing.

Everyone began gathering their things.

As I stood, Benjamin approached.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked devastated.

“I’m sorry.””

The words were simple.

Too simple.

But maybe that was the point.

For the first time, he wasn’t trying to win.

“I know that doesn’t fix anything.””

“No.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

A moment passed.

Then he said:

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His eyes moved toward Dorothy.

“She didn’t just hide money.””

My expression changed.

“What else did she do?””

Benjamin’s voice dropped.

“She changed something in our marriage documents.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“She made sure that if we divorced, you would lose more than money.””

My heart sank.

“Lose what?””

Benjamin looked toward the courtroom door.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your name.””
