Chapter 3: The Second Envelope
I followed Michael into the hallway before anyone else could reach him.
“Michael.””
He stopped.
The expression on his face told me everything.
Something was wrong.
“What was Benjamin talking about?””
He looked around.
The hallway outside the courtroom was filled with people, attorneys, and quiet conversations.
But suddenly, it felt like we were alone.
“Emma, I was going to tell you after the hearing.””
My stomach dropped.
“Tell me what?””
Michael exhaled slowly.
Then he opened his briefcase.
And pulled out another envelope.
My handwriting was not on this one.
There was no name.
No label.
Just a sealed white envelope.
“Where did you get that?””
Michael looked at it.
“Benjamin gave this to me yesterday.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“He delivered it through his attorney.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Why would he give my lawyer something?””
Michael didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
“Michael.””
He finally looked at me.
“Because he wanted me to have it.””
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
“What’s inside?””
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“I didn’t open it.””
“Why?””
His expression softened.
“Because Benjamin specifically requested that it only be opened if you brought up certain information in court.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was insane.
“He created a trap.””
Michael nodded.
“That’s what I think.””
I looked back toward the courtroom doors.
Benjamin was inside.
Probably telling his family he still had control.
Probably convincing Veronica that everything would be fine.
But I knew him better now.
He wasn’t calm.
He was planning.
“Open it.””
Michael hesitated.
“Emma—”
“Open it.””
He broke the seal.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
He unfolded it.
And as he read the first line, his entire expression changed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
Then back at the paper.
“Emma…”
“What does it say?””
He handed it to me.
The first sentence was written in Benjamin’s handwriting.
My hands went cold.
Because I recognized it immediately.
The same handwriting that once filled birthday cards.
The same handwriting that signed our mortgage.
The same handwriting that had promised forever.
The letter began:
“Emma, if you are reading this, then I know you found the account.””
I kept reading.
“I also know you believe I betrayed you.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
Believe?
I didn’t believe.
I knew.
But then I reached the next line.
And everything inside me stopped.
“Before you destroy me in court, there is something you need to know about the money.””
I looked at Michael.
“What is this?””
He didn’t answer.
I continued reading.
“The account was not created to hide money from you.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
That didn’t make sense.
Because the evidence showed exactly that.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my entire understanding of the last eight years began to crack.
“Emma, the money wasn’t hidden because I wanted to leave you with nothing.””
A pause.
A single sentence.
The kind of sentence that changes a story.
“It was hidden because someone in my family was trying to take everything from both of us.””
I stopped breathing.
Someone in his family.
Behind us, the courtroom doors opened.
Benjamin walked out.
He saw the letter in my hand.
And for the first time all day…
He looked relieved.
Not confident.
Not victorious.
Relieved.
Like he had been waiting for me to discover the truth.
Michael lowered his voice.
“Emma, there’s more.””
I looked down.
At the bottom of the page was one final line.
A name.
A name I never expected to see.
A name that explained why Benjamin’s family wanted me destroyed.
And why Dorothy Carter had been lying from the beginning.
May you like
The name was:
*Veronica Hale.*
