Chapter 4: The Woman Behind the Betrayal
The name on the paper looked impossible.
Veronica Hale.
I stared at those two words until the ink blurred.
The woman I thought had stolen my husband’s love was somehow connected to the money he had hidden.
For months, I had imagined the simplest version of the story.
Benjamin met Veronica.
Benjamin fell in love.
Benjamin replaced me.
It was painful, but it was easy to understand.
Now, standing in the courthouse hallway with a letter written in my husband’s handwriting, I realized the truth was much uglier.
And much more complicated.
Michael watched my face carefully.
“Emma, I know what you’re thinking.””
I looked up.
“What am I thinking?””
“That you don’t know whether to believe him.””
I folded the letter slowly.
“You’re right.””
Because how could I?
The man who wrote those words was the same man who lied to me for months.
The same man who let his family humiliate me.
The same man who sat across the courtroom and watched them call me worthless.
Michael lowered his voice.
“There’s something else you need to understand.””
“What?””
“This second envelope wasn’t a defense.””
I frowned.
“Then what was it?””
“A warning.””
Before I could answer, the courtroom doors opened.
Benjamin stepped into the hallway.
For once, he wasn’t wearing his perfect businessman mask.
His tie was slightly loose.
His expression was exhausted.
But the strangest part was his eyes.
They weren’t filled with anger.
They were filled with regret.
“Emma.””
I almost didn’t recognize the sound of my name in his voice.
Not because it was different.
Because it sounded like the old Benjamin.
The man I married.
The man who used to bring me coffee every morning.
The man who used to dance with me in the kitchen when we couldn’t afford vacations.
I hated that a part of me still remembered him.
“What do you want?””
He looked at Michael.
“Five minutes.””
“No,” I said immediately.
His face tightened.
“Emma, please.””
That word almost made me laugh.
Please.
After everything.
Michael stepped back.
“I’ll give you both a moment. But don’t discuss legal strategy.””
He walked away.
Benjamin waited until he was gone.
Then he looked at the letter in my hand.
“You opened it.””
“You wanted me to.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His jaw clenched.
Because even now, answering a simple question seemed difficult for him.
“Because I knew you would find the account eventually.””
I crossed my arms.
“So you admit it existed.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
I expected another excuse.
Another carefully prepared explanation.
Instead, he looked tired.
“I never wanted that money to be used against you.””
I stared at him.
“Do you hear yourself?””
He looked away.
“I know how it sounds.””
“No, Benjamin. You don’t.””
My voice became sharper.
“You hid money during our marriage. You cheated on me. Your family stood in court and called me useless. And now you want me to believe you were secretly protecting me?””
His face fell.
“I deserve that.””
The answer caught me off guard.
Because Benjamin Carter never admitted he was wrong.
Not once.
“What happened?”” I asked.
His eyes moved toward the courtroom doors.
“Dorothy happened.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Your mother?””
He nodded.
“She knew about the account.””
“Why?””
“Because she helped create it.””
The hallway seemed to tilt.
“What?””
Benjamin rubbed his forehead.
“I should have told you everything years ago.””
“Yes, you should have.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I shook my head.
“No. You were controlling the situation.””
He accepted that.
“I was.””
A silence passed between us.
Then he said something I never expected.
“Veronica wasn’t the reason I left.””
My heart hardened.
“Don’t.””
“I’m telling the truth.””
“Benjamin, I saw the messages.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“You wrote that I was an obstacle.””
He swallowed.
“I know.””
“You planned your future with her.””
“Yes.””
“Then don’t stand here and pretend you were some innocent victim.””
His face showed pain.
“I wasn’t.””
The admission was quiet.
Almost broken.
“But Veronica wasn’t the person I thought she was either.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
Before he could answer, footsteps approached.
Dorothy appeared at the end of the hallway.
She had clearly been searching for him.
Her expression changed when she saw us together.
“What are you doing?””
Benjamin immediately stepped between us.
“Mother.””
Dorothy’s eyes moved to the letter.
Then to me.
And the confidence returned.
A cold smile appeared.
“So she found out.””
My blood ran cold.
“You knew?””
Dorothy didn’t deny it.
Instead, she adjusted the pearls around her neck.
“Emma, you really should have accepted the settlement when you had the chance.””
I stared at her.
“You knew Benjamin was hiding money.””
She smiled.
“I knew many things.””
“Why?””
Her expression remained calm.
“Because someone had to protect this family.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“Protect this family by destroying me?””
Dorothy stepped closer.
“You were never supposed to be part of the final picture.””
Benjamin’s face changed.
“Mother.””
She ignored him.
“You were useful when my son was building his company. You kept him comfortable. You helped him pretend he was more successful than he was.””
My hands curled into fists.
“But once he reached a certain level, you became a weakness.””
Benjamin looked horrified.
“Stop.””
Dorothy finally looked at him.
“You’re emotional. That’s your problem.””
Then she turned back to me.
“Women like you always think love means ownership.””
The cruelty in her voice was almost impressive.
“I gave you eight years of my son’s life. You should be thankful.””
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I finally understood.
Dorothy didn’t hate me because I wasn’t good enough.
She hated me because I knew the version of Benjamin she wanted everyone to forget.
The human version.
The imperfect version.
The version before money.
Before power.
Before her control.
“Did Veronica work for you?”” I asked.
For the first time, Dorothy hesitated.
Just slightly.
But enough.
Benjamin saw it too.
“Mother.””
Dorothy looked at him.
“You were always so easy to manipulate.””
The hallway went silent.
Benjamin’s face drained.
“What did you say?””
Dorothy smiled.
“You heard me.””
Then she walked away.
Leaving behind a truth none of us were ready to face.
Benjamin watched her disappear.
And whispered:
“She used me.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
He looked back.
“She used all of us.””
The courtroom doors opened again.
The bailiff called everyone back inside.
But before we returned, Michael rushed toward us.
His face was pale.
“Emma.””
“What happened?””
He held up his phone.
“There’s been a development.””
“What kind?””
He looked at Benjamin.
Then at me.
“Someone just submitted new evidence.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
Michael swallowed.
“Veronica.””
May you like
And when he turned the phone around, I saw the message that changed everything.
*I want immunity. I’ll tell you what Dorothy and Benjamin really did.*
