Chapter 6: What Happened Five Years Ago
The hospital went into lockdown.
Doors slammed.
Alarms screamed.
Security officers flooded the corridor while nurses moved Lily's bed deeper into the ICU.
Calvin was bleeding from his shoulder.
Dr. Reyes pressed gauze against the wound.
“It's a graze,” he said.
“The bullet didn't penetrate deeply.””
Calvin nodded.
“I'm fine.””
I stared at him.
“You covered Lily.””
He looked at me.
“Of course I did.””
“Why?””
He almost smiled.
“Because she's my daughter.””
The answer should have made me feel something.
Instead, I remembered Lily flinching when he entered the room.
I remembered the bruises.
The videos.
The stairs.
I couldn't forget any of it.
“Then tell me the truth.””
Calvin looked at Hale.
“Not here.””
“Now,” I said.
He swallowed.
“Five years ago, Nora, you were working on a classified investigation.””
“I was deployed?””
“No.””
“You're saying this happened before the deployment?””
“Yes.””
“What investigation?””
He shook his head.
“I can't tell you.””
I stepped closer.
“You lost the right to protect me from the truth.””
His eyes dropped.
“I know.””
“Then speak.””
Calvin sat down.
His injured shoulder trembled.
“You were assigned to review financial transfers connected to a defense contractor.””
I frowned.
“I don't remember.””
“You weren't supposed to.””
“What happened?””
“You found evidence that classified equipment was being diverted overseas.””
Hale's expression changed.
“Do you have a case number?””
Calvin nodded.
“Black Meridian.””
Hale went completely still.
I looked between them.
“What is Black Meridian?””
Hale answered quietly.
“A military investigation that disappeared from federal records.””
I looked at Calvin.
“You knew about it?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“You told me.””
I shook my head.
“I don't remember telling you anything.””
“You did.””
“Why?””
“Because you trusted me.””
The words hurt more than they should have.
Calvin continued.
“You discovered someone inside the program was selling information.””
“Who?””
“Daniel Cross.””
My stomach tightened.
“That man outside Lily's room?””
“Yes.””
“What was he?””
“Not a contractor.””
“Then what?””
“A fixer.””
Hale looked at me.
“Private intelligence.””
Calvin nodded.
“He worked for people who made problems disappear.””
I thought of Rebecca.
The videos.
The fire.
My daughter.
“What happened to me?””
Calvin looked away.
“You confronted him.””
“When?””
“Five years ago.””
“At the house?””
“Yes.””
“The fire.””
He nodded.
I closed my eyes.
The memory came again.
Smoke.
Heat.
A door.
Calvin shouting.
Daniel's silhouette.
My own voice.
*Call the police.*
Then something hit my head.
I opened my eyes.
“I remember.””
Calvin looked up.
“What?””
“Daniel was there.””
“Yes.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“Margaret was there.””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Calvin didn't answer.
“Why was your mother there?””
He rubbed his face.
“Because she was involved.””
I stared at him.
“Involved how?””
“She was the person moving the money.””
Hale swore under his breath.
I stepped backward.
“No.””
Calvin nodded.
“She used shell companies.””
“Your mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she threatened Lily.””
My chest tightened.
“She threatened our daughter?””
“She said if I cooperated with you, Lily would disappear.””
I shook my head.
“You could have gone to the police.””
“I did.””
Hale looked at him.
“Where?””
“Federal authorities.””
“When?””
“After the fire.””
“Why wasn't there a record?””
Calvin laughed bitterly.
“There was.””
“Where?””
“Gone.””
Hale's face hardened.
“Who erased it?””
“That's what I've been trying to find out for five years.””
I stared at him.
“Five years?””
“Yes.””
“And while you were investigating, you let Lily live with Margaret?””
“I thought I could protect her.””
“By hurting her?””
Calvin's eyes filled with tears.
“I never hurt her.””
“Then explain the videos.””
“I made them.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I installed the cameras.””
“Why?””
“To document what happened when I wasn't home.””
I stared at him.
“You recorded Margaret.””
“Yes.””
“And yourself.””
“Yes.””
“Then why were you threatening Lily?””
His face broke.
“I wasn't.””
I remembered the video.
His hand on Lily's chin.
His voice telling her to say things.
I pointed toward the computer.
“I watched you.””
“I know.””
“You told her you didn't need Mommy.””
“I was acting.””
“For whom?””
Calvin leaned forward.
“For the cameras.””
Silence.
“I needed Margaret to believe I was helping her control Lily.””
I shook my head.
“Why?””
“Because I suspected she had someone inside the house.””
“Daniel?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Calvin looked at me.
“I never found out.””
I thought of the stranger Lily described.
The man who told Calvin I was coming back.
The man in the photograph.
The man who had been at the house five years ago.
“Is he the same man?””
Calvin nodded.
“Yes.””
“What's his name?””
Calvin hesitated.
“Evan Mercer.””
The name meant nothing.
Then something inside my memory shifted.
A school photograph.
A birthday party.
A man standing beside Calvin.
I whispered, “Lily's pediatrician.””
Calvin looked at me.
“What?””
“Evan Mercer was Lily's pediatrician.””
Hale immediately stood.
“That's impossible.””
“I remember him.””
Calvin stared at me.
“No.””
“He treated Lily when she was five.””
“No.””
“He came to our house.””
Calvin's face turned white.
“Nora…”
“What?””
“Lily never had a pediatrician named Evan Mercer.””
I stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
Calvin stood.
“There was a doctor.””
“Yes.””
“But his name wasn't Evan Mercer.””
Hale looked between us.
“What was his name?””
Calvin whispered:
“Samuel Reyes.””
I turned toward the door.
Dr. Reyes was standing there.
He had heard everything.
His face was expressionless.
I stared at him.
“Doctor?””
He didn't move.
Calvin stepped backward.
“That's not Samuel Reyes.””
The doctor slowly closed the door.
Hale reached for his weapon.
“Don't.””
Dr. Reyes smiled.
It was the first time I had ever seen him smile.
“Lieutenant Whitaker,” he said softly.
“You've finally remembered.””
The lights went out.
When the emergency lights came on, Dr. Reyes was gone.
So was Lily.
Her bed was empty.
And on the pillow lay a single sheet of paper.
I picked it up.

Three words were written across it in black ink:
*ASK YOUR HUSBAND.*
