Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Glass

The stranger stood outside Lily's ICU room with one hand resting against the glass.

He wasn't dressed like a doctor.

He wasn't dressed like hospital security.

He wore a charcoal suit, a pale blue shirt, and a black watch that caught the fluorescent light every time he moved.

I had never seen him before.

But he looked at me as though he knew exactly who I was.

Lily saw him too.

Her fingers locked around mine.

“Mommy,” she whispered.

“I've got you.””

“Don't let him come in.””

The door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

I stood between the door and Lily's bed.

“Who are you?””

The man stopped.

He looked through the glass at Lily.

Then at me.

“My name is Daniel Cross.””

Detective Hale appeared behind him.

“Mr. Cross?””

Daniel turned.

“You know me?””

“I know your name.””

Hale's voice was suddenly colder.

“Step away from the door.””

Daniel smiled faintly.

“You're making this more dramatic than it needs to be.””

“Step away.””

Daniel lifted both hands.

“All right.””

He moved back.

Two hospital security officers approached from the hallway.

Daniel didn't resist when they took his arms.

But as they led him away, he looked directly at me.

“Nora,” he said quietly, “you need to listen before you destroy your own family.””

I didn't answer.

The doors closed behind him.

I looked at Hale.

“Who is he?””

Hale's jaw tightened.

“Daniel Cross is a private security consultant.””

“For my husband?””

“No.””

“Then who hired him?””

“I don't know yet.””

“Find out.””

Hale nodded.

I turned back toward Lily.

Her face had gone pale.

“Mommy?””

“Yes?””

“Is he going to take me?””

“No.””

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

She squeezed my hand.

Then her eyes drifted toward the lavender quilt.

I remembered the text.

*CHECK YOUR DAUGHTER'S LAVENDER QUILT.*

Slowly, I reached down.

Lily watched me.

I lifted the corner.

Nothing.

I ran my fingers along the seam.

Nothing.

Then I felt something hard.

My heart stopped.

“What is it?”” Hale asked.

I pulled the quilt completely free.

There was a small rectangular bulge sewn into the inner lining.

Hale stepped closer.

“Don't touch it.””

I froze.

He put on gloves and carefully opened the seam.

A tiny black memory card slid into his palm.

Lily began to cry.

“Mommy…”

I immediately moved back to her.

“You're okay.””

“I didn't put it there.””

“I know.””

“Grandma did.””

“I know.””

Hale examined the card.

“This could be what we've been looking for.””

“What could be on it?””

“Evidence.””

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“Let's find out.””

We went to a secure room.

Dr. Reyes stayed with Lily while Hale connected the memory card to an isolated hospital computer.

A folder appeared.

There were thirty-seven files.

Photographs.

Audio recordings.

Videos.

My hands curled into fists.

Hale clicked the first video.

The screen showed my kitchen.

The timestamp was four months old.

Calvin walked into frame.

Lily was sitting at the table doing homework.

He stood behind her.

“Read it again.””

Lily looked down.

“I don't know.””

“Read it.””

“I don't know the answer.””

Calvin slammed his hand onto the table.

Lily jumped.

I stopped breathing.

The video continued.

“You're going to learn,” Calvin said.

Lily began crying.

“Daddy, please.””

“Stop crying.””

“I want Mommy.””

“You don't need her.””

I closed my eyes.

Hale paused the video.

Neither of us spoke.

“Continue,” I said.

He pressed play.

Calvin crouched beside Lily.

His voice became unnaturally calm.

“What's Mommy's job?””

Lily sniffed.

“She helps people.””

“What else?””

“She goes away.””

“And why does she go away?””

“I don't know.””

“Because she doesn't want to be here.””

Lily shook her head.

“No.””

Calvin grabbed her chin.

“Say it.””

The video ended.

My hands were shaking.

I hadn't noticed until Hale gently pushed a chair toward me.

“Sit down.””

“I don't need to sit.””

“You're shaking.””

“I know.””

Another video started automatically.

This one was in the hallway.

Lily was standing beside the stairs.

Margaret appeared.

“Your father told you what happens if you lie.””

Lily nodded.

Margaret smiled.

“Good girl.””

I stared at the screen.

My mother-in-law walked away.

Lily remained alone.

Then a shadow appeared at the top of the staircase.

The video ended.

I looked at Hale.

“Who recorded these?””

“Hidden camera.””

“I know.””

“I mean who installed it?””

“Your husband?””

“Maybe.””

“Then why hide the card in the quilt?””

Hale didn't answer.

I rewound the footage.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“Look.””

I pointed.

At the edge of the frame, just before the video ended, a hand appeared.

Someone had reached toward the camera.

A ring was visible.

Silver.

With a dark stone.

Hale froze.

“You recognize it?””

I nodded.

“Margaret wears that ring every day.””

Hale opened another file.

A photograph appeared.

Margaret.

Calvin.

Daniel Cross.

All three stood outside a building I recognized.

My husband's office.

I leaned toward the screen.

“When was this taken?””

“Three months ago.””

“That's when Rebecca quit.””

Hale looked at me.

“Exactly.””

The door opened.

Rebecca rushed inside.

“Nora.””

“What happened?””

“They're looking for the card.””

“Who?””

She glanced at Hale.

“Daniel.””

Hale stood.

“Why?””

“Because he knows what's on it.””

“What is on it?””

Rebecca's breathing was uneven.

“The reason they were watching Lily.””

I stepped toward her.

“Explain.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't know everything.””

“Then tell me what you do know.””

She looked at the screen.

“Your husband wasn't just hurting Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

“He was teaching her what to say.””

“Why?””

“So when someone asked questions, she would repeat his story.””

“About what?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“About the night you left.””

My blood went cold.

“What happened that night?””

“I don't know.””

“Then why did you say—”

“Because I heard them talking.””

“Who?””

“Calvin and Margaret.””

“What did they say?””

Rebecca swallowed.

“They said you couldn't be allowed to remember.””

I stared at her.

“Remember what?””

Before she could answer, every light in the hallway flickered.

The computer screen went black.

Hale reached for his radio.

“What happened?””

The hospital alarm suddenly began screaming.

Then Lily's monitor started beeping.

I ran.

“Lily!””

She was awake, terrified.

“Mommy!””

Dr. Reyes was beside her.

“Her oxygen dropped.””

“What happened?””

“We're stabilizing her.””

I grabbed her hand.

“I'm here.””

Lily looked past me.

Her eyes widened.

“Mommy…”

“What?””

“He came.””

I turned.

The ICU door was open.

Daniel Cross was standing at the far end of the corridor.

A security officer lay unconscious on the floor beside him.

Daniel looked directly at me.

Then he lifted one finger to his lips.

Behind me, Lily screamed.

“That's him!””

Daniel turned and ran.

Hale sprinted after him.

I stayed beside Lily.

But before the door slammed shut, I saw something in Daniel's hand.

A photograph.

And even from across the hallway, I recognized the woman in it.

It was me.

Standing beside a military vehicle.

May you like

Three days before my deployment.

The photograph had been taken from inside my own house.
