Chapter 5: The Photograph in His Hand
The photograph wouldn't leave my mind.
It wasn't the image of me that frightened me.
It was the angle.
Whoever had taken it had been standing inside our home.
Behind the curtains of the upstairs window.
Watching me leave.
I sat beside Lily while Dr. Reyes adjusted her oxygen.
“Her vitals are improving,” he said.
I nodded.
“Is she going to be okay?””
“She needs rest.””
“Doctor.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me the truth.””
He hesitated.
“She is physically stable.””
“That wasn't what I asked.””
His eyes softened.
“She has been under significant stress.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Can that cause what we're seeing?””
“Stress can affect many things. But it doesn't explain her injuries.””
I nodded.
“Thank you.””
Dr. Reyes left.
Lily's eyes remained closed.
I thought she was asleep.
Then she whispered, “Mommy?””
“I'm here.””
“Don't tell Daddy I told you.””
“I won't.””
“Don't tell Grandma.””
“I won't.””
She opened her eyes.
“Can I tell you something?””
“Anything.””
She looked toward the door.
“There was a man in Daddy's office.””
“Daniel?””
She shook her head.
“Another man.””
“What did he look like?””
“Tall.””
“Was he old?””
“No.””
“Young?””
She nodded.
“Did you know him?””
“No.””
“What did he do?””
“He talked to Daddy.””
“What did he say?””
Lily swallowed.
“He said you were coming back.””
My skin prickled.
“When?””
“Before you came home.””
“How did he know?””
“I don't know.””
“What else?””
“He said Mommy was going to remember.””
I leaned closer.
“Remember what?””
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“The fire.””
I froze.
“What fire?””
She started crying.
“I don't know.””
“Lily, sweetheart, what fire?””
“The house.””
I looked at her.
“Our house?””
She nodded.
“Daddy said Mommy wasn't supposed to remember the fire.””
I felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath me.
There had been no fire.
Not that I remembered.
But suddenly, fragments began surfacing.
Smoke.
A ringing alarm.
A hallway filled with gray haze.
My own hand pulling open a door.
Someone shouting my name.
Then darkness.
I pressed my fingers against my temple.
A sharp pain shot through my head.
“Nora?””
Hale appeared at the door.
“You okay?””
I looked at him.
“Have you ever heard of a fire at my house?””
His expression changed.
“No.””
“Are you sure?””
“Yes.””
“Search the records.””
He immediately took out his phone.
“What happened?””
“Lily says there was a fire.””
Hale stared at me.
“When?””
“Before my deployment.””
He made a call.
I watched him walk toward the window.
His voice became too low to hear.
Five minutes later, he returned.
“There was an incident.””
My heart stopped.
“What kind?””
“Electrical fire.””
“Where?””
“Your home.””
I stared at him.
“When?””
“Four days before your deployment.””
I couldn't breathe.
“Why don't I remember?””
Hale looked uncomfortable.
“Because the report says you weren't there.””
I shook my head.
“I was.””
“How do you know?””
“Because I remember smoke.””
Hale studied me.
“Memory can be complicated after trauma.””
“No.””
I pointed toward Lily.
“She remembers.””
He looked at her.
“What does the report say?””
“Minor kitchen fire. No injuries. Fire department responded. Damage was contained.””
I whispered, “That's a lie.””
Hale didn't disagree.
“Why?””
He pulled out his phone.
“Because the fire report was amended.””
“By whom?””
“Your husband.””
I stared at him.
“Calvin changed an official fire report?””
“Apparently.””
“Why?””
“I don't know.””
I stood.
“Then let's find out.””
Hale reached for my arm.
“Not yet.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because Daniel Cross is still somewhere in this hospital.””
I stopped.
“You didn't catch him?””
“No.””
“Then where is he?””
“We don't know.””
A nurse came running toward us.
“Detective!””
Hale turned.
“What?””
“The security cameras are down.””
“How long?””
“Seven minutes.””
Hale's face hardened.
“That's exactly when he disappeared.””
I looked at Lily.
She was watching us.
Her eyes suddenly widened.
“Mommy.””
I went to her.
“What?””
“Under my bed.””
I looked underneath.
Nothing.
“There's something there.””
I crouched.
My fingers found a small metal box taped beneath the frame.
I pulled it free.
It was locked.
A key was attached to the back.
I looked at Lily.
“Where did you get this?””
“Daddy gave it to me.””
“When?””
“Before he pushed me.””
My heart stopped.
“He pushed you?””
Lily nodded.
“On the stairs.””
“Yesterday?””
She shook her head.
“Before.””
I looked at Hale.
“Before yesterday?””
“Yes.””
Hale crouched beside the bed.
“Lily, do you remember when?””
She thought.
“After Mommy left.””
My hands went cold.
“Why did Daddy give you this box?””
“He said to keep it safe.””
“Did he tell you what was inside?””
Lily shook her head.
“Grandma tried to take it.””
I looked at the key.
Then the box.
I opened it.
Inside was a folded document.
A photograph.
And a small gold wedding ring.
My ring.
The one I had lost five years earlier.
I stared at it.
“This isn't possible.””
Hale picked up the document.
His eyes moved across the page.
“Nora…”
“What?””
He handed it to me.
It was an insurance claim.
The date was five years earlier.
The property listed was our home.
The claim involved a fire.
A fire that had supposedly never happened.
I looked at the photograph.
It showed the same house.
Burned.
The entire second floor was blackened.
In front of it stood Calvin.
Margaret.
And another man.
The same man Lily had described.
Tall.
Young.
Dark hair.
I recognized him.
My memory crashed into me.
A voice.
A hand.
Smoke.
A door.
And a sentence.
*Don't let Nora wake up.*
I staggered backward.
Hale caught me.
“What do you remember?””
I couldn't speak.
Then I saw the wedding ring again.
The ring I had lost five years ago.
My hands began to tremble.
“Calvin said I lost this.””
Hale looked at the ring.
“Did you?””
“No.””
I stared at the photograph.
“I was wearing it the night of the fire.””
Hale's face changed.
“What night?””
I looked at him.
“The night I was supposed to die.””
The door opened.
Calvin stood there.
He looked at the photograph in my hand.
His face collapsed.
“Nora…”
I raised the picture.
“You told me there was never a fire.””
He didn't answer.
“You told me I had a breakdown.””
“Nora, listen—”
“You told me I imagined the smoke.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
He stepped inside.
“From the truth.””
I walked toward him.
“What truth?””
His eyes filled with tears.
For the first time, he looked less like my husband and more like a frightened man trapped inside someone else's lie.
“I didn't hurt Lily.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She said you did.””
“I know.””
“She has bruises.””
“I know.””
“She was terrified of you.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Calvin looked toward Lily.
“Because I had to make them believe I was the one controlling her.””
Silence.
Hale's hand moved toward his weapon.
“What are you talking about?””
Calvin looked at me.
“Five years ago, you discovered something.””
“What?””
“You found out who Daniel Cross really worked for.””
My heartbeat stopped.
“Who?””
Calvin opened his mouth.
A gunshot exploded somewhere down the corridor.
Lily screamed.
The window beside us shattered.
Calvin threw himself over Lily's bed.
Hale dragged me to the floor.
Glass rained across the room.
Then silence.
I lifted my head.
Calvin was still covering Lily.
His shirt was torn.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
He looked at me.
“I told you,” he whispered.
“They're not trying to hurt Lily.””
May you like
His eyes moved toward me.
“They're trying to make you remember.””
