Chapter 9: The Truth Jonathan Left Behind

For a moment, neither of us moved.

I had imagined this moment thousands of times.

Finding my daughter.

Holding her.

Telling her I never stopped loving her.

But I never imagined her standing in a dark apartment, looking at me like I was a stranger.

Because I was.

To her.

"You're Lily.""

The words barely left my mouth.

The young woman nodded.

"I used to be.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"What does that mean?""

She looked down.

"My name is Rachel Reed now.""

Claire stepped forward carefully.

"We're not here to hurt you.""

Rachel looked at her.

"I know.""

Then she looked at me.

"I just don't know what to call you.""

That sentence hurt more than anger would have.

"I'm your mother.""

Her eyes filled.

Then she looked away.

"I don't know if that's true.""

I wanted to run to her.

Hold her.

But I didn't.

She had spent her whole life believing I abandoned her.

I had no right to demand forgiveness.

"I didn't give you away," I whispered.

She looked at me.

"Then who did?""

I opened my mouth.

But I didn't have the answer.

Not yet.

Rachel walked toward the table.

"There are things you need to know.""

She picked up a folder.

"I was going to tell you everything.""

"What is it?""

"Proof.""

She handed it to me.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one name appeared everywhere.

Jonathan Reed.

My hands shook.

"Your father kept records," Rachel said.

"My father?""

"Jonathan.""

I looked up.

"Where is he?""

She became quiet.

"I don't know.""

The answer surprised me.

"You don't know?""

"No.""

She sat down.

"He disappeared when I was young.""

"Just like before.""

Rachel nodded.

"But before he left, he told me something.""

"What?""

She looked directly at me.

"He said if Mark Carter ever found me, I should run.""

The room went silent.

"Why?""

Rachel opened one of the documents.

"Because Mark wasn't trying to steal your money.""

I stared at her.

"He was trying to erase everyone connected to Jonathan.""

A chill moved through me.

"Why?""

Rachel pushed the document toward me.

It was an old newspaper article.

A photograph.

Two men.

Jonathan Reed.

And Mark Carter.

Except the article wasn't about business.

It was about a crime.

*PARTNERS LINKED TO FRAUD INVESTIGATION.*

I looked closer.

Then I saw something.

A third person.

A woman.

Sarah Reed.

"Who is she?""

Rachel answered quietly.

"My mother.""

The name hit me.

Sarah.

The woman Mark said was part of the past.

"The woman he loved before me.""

Rachel shook her head.

"No.""

I frowned.

"Then who?""

"My mother was Jonathan's wife.""

I froze.

"But Mark...""

Rachel nodded.

"Mark wasn't Jonathan's friend.""

The truth finally began forming.

"He was his enemy.""

Claire spent the next hour organizing everything.

Pieces.

Dates.

Connections.

Twenty-nine years of secrets finally becoming a story.

Mark Carter wasn't a man who stole another identity.

He stole a life.

Jonathan Reed had built a successful business.

Mark had been his accountant.

His trusted friend.

Until money disappeared.

Jonathan was blamed.

But according to the documents Rachel had...

Mark was the one who created the fraud.

"He framed him," Claire said.

I stared at the papers.

"Then why did he marry me?""

Rachel answered.

"Because you were the last person who could expose him.""

My heart sank.

"Me?""

"You were there when everything happened.""

"I don't remember.""

Rachel looked at me sadly.

"Because you were drugged.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

"After you gave birth, someone gave you medication.""

My hands went cold.

"I was told there were complications.""

"There were.""

Rachel looked at me.

"Someone wanted you confused.""

"Who?""

She didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

I knew.

Mark.

The man who held my hand when I cried.

The man who told me my baby was gone.

The man who comforted me while he was hiding the truth.

I felt sick.

"Why marry me?""

Rachel's voice softened.

"Because Jonathan left evidence with you.""

"What evidence?""

She looked at me.

"The original documents proving Mark's crime.""

I shook my head.

"I don't have them.""

Rachel looked toward my purse.

"Yes, you do.""

I froze.

"What?""

She pointed.

"The lottery ticket.""

I stared at her.

"What does that have to do with anything?""

Rachel stepped closer.

"When you checked the winning numbers, did you look at the back?""

My breath caught.

The back.

I had never checked.

The ticket had been folded inside my wallet for months.

Slowly, I pulled it out.

Rachel pointed.

"Look.""

I turned it over.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then I noticed faint writing.

A message hidden beneath the printed numbers.

My hands began shaking.

Because the handwriting was familiar.

Not Mark's.

Not Rachel's.

Someone else's.

A message from a man who had disappeared twenty-nine years ago.

*Emily, if you are reading this, Mark has finally shown you who he is.*

I stopped breathing.

Below that was one final sentence.

*The truth about Lily is only the beginning.*

And beneath it...

A location.

A place.

A name.

May you like

Jonathan Reed.

Alive.
