Chapter 3: The Secret Behind His Illness

I stood in Mark's office holding the phone long after the call ended.

The house was silent.

Too silent.

I looked around the room where my husband had spent years pretending to work.

Now every object felt like a clue.

The books on the shelf.

The locked drawer.

The hidden documents.

The life I thought I knew.

I grabbed the folder and rushed to my bedroom.

I didn't know who to trust anymore.

So I trusted evidence.

I spread everything across the bed.

The financial report.

The photographs.

The mysterious notes.

Then I found something hidden between two documents.

A medical record.

At first, I thought it belonged to Mark.

But the date was wrong.

It was from a year before his diagnosis.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

The patient's name wasn't Mark Carter.

It was another name.

*Jonathan Reed.*

I searched through the papers again.

Another document.

A transfer agreement.

Another name.

Another account.

Another piece of a puzzle I didn't understand.

My phone rang.

This time, it was Mark.

I stared at his name.

The man who had once been my home.

The man who had become a stranger.

I answered.

"Emily?""

His voice sounded weak.

Concerned.

The same voice that had fooled me for years.

"Where are you?"" he asked.

"I'm home.""

A pause.

"Why didn't you come back to the hospital?""

I looked at the documents in front of me.

"I had things to do.""

"Things?""

His tone changed slightly.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Suspicion.

"Emily, I needed you.""

I almost laughed.

"You always do.""

Silence.

Then Mark said, "What does that mean?""

I closed my eyes.

I couldn't reveal what I knew.

Not yet.

"I was tired," I said.

"Of what?""

I looked at the folder with my name.

"Being the only person holding everything together.""

Another silence.

Then his voice softened.

"I'm sorry you feel that way.""

Feel that way.

Not I'm sorry I hurt you.

Not I'm sorry I lied.

A careful sentence.

A sentence designed to avoid responsibility.

"I'll come home tomorrow," he said.

"We need to talk.""

My hand tightened around the phone.

"No.""

The word surprised both of us.

"What?""

"You need to rest.""

"Emily...""

"I said no.""

For the first time in almost thirty years, I ended the call before he did.

My hands were shaking.

But I felt something I hadn't felt in years.

Control.

The next morning, I hired an attorney.

Her name was Claire Bennett.

I found her through a recommendation from Rachel.

When I entered her office, she studied my face for a moment.

"You look like someone who just discovered a very expensive secret.""

I placed the folder on her desk.

"I think my husband has been stealing from me.""

She opened the first page.

Then another.

Her expression changed.

"How long have you been married?""

"Twenty-nine years.""

"And you had no idea?""

I swallowed.

"No.""

Claire leaned back.

"Emily, I need you to understand something.""

"What?""

"If these documents are authentic, this isn't just a financial issue.""

"What is it?""

She tapped the photograph of Mark and Vanessa.

"This looks like preparation.""

"Preparation for what?""

Claire didn't answer immediately.

She picked up another paper.

Then another.

Finally, she looked at me.

"Your husband may not have been planning to take your money.""

My stomach tightened.

"Then what?""

"He may have been planning to take your identity.""

I felt the room go cold.

Before I could respond, Claire's assistant knocked on the door.

"Sorry to interrupt, but someone left this envelope for Emily Carter.""

My name.

Again.

I stared at the envelope.

"Who delivered it?""

The assistant shook her head.

"They wouldn't say.""

Claire handed it to me carefully.

"Open it.""

Inside was a single piece of paper.

No explanation.

No signature.

Just one sentence.

*Mark Carter is not the man you married.*

My breathing stopped.

Then below it was another line.

A name.

A name I recognized from the hidden medical records.

*Jonathan Reed.*

I looked up at Claire.

"Who is Jonathan Reed?""

Her face had gone pale.

"Emily...""

"What?""

She slowly pushed the document back toward me.

"Because if that name is connected to your husband...""

She paused.

"And if my guess is right...""

"What?""

May you like

Claire stared at the paper.

"Your entire marriage may have been built on a lie from the very beginning.""
