Chapter 8: The Daughter I Was Never Allowed to Find

I didn't sleep.

Again.

But this time, it wasn't because of betrayal.

It was because somewhere in the world, my daughter was alive.

Twenty-nine years.

Twenty-nine years of birthdays I missed.

First steps I never saw.

First words I never heard.

First day of school.

First heartbreak.

Every moment stolen from both of us.

I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise.

The lottery ticket remained untouched beside me.

A hundred million dollars.

The thing that had started this nightmare.

But now it felt meaningless.

Money couldn't buy back time.

Money couldn't give me back the years.

At 7:15 a.m., Claire arrived.

She took one look at my face.

"What happened?""

I handed her the birth certificate.

She read it.

Then looked up.

"Emily...""

"Tell me you can explain this.""

She didn't.

That scared me more.

"I need to know if this is real.""

"I'll find out.""

"No.""

I grabbed her hand.

"I need you to understand something.""

"What?""

"I don't care about the money anymore.""

Claire studied me.

"I believe you.""

"I need my daughter.""

She nodded.

"Then that's what we find.""

Three hours later, Claire had answers.

Not all of them.

But enough.

"The birth certificate is real," she said.

I closed my eyes.

"Okay.""

"Emily...""

"Just tell me.""

She placed a folder on the table.

"Your daughter was born under a different name.""

"Why?""

"Because someone changed the records.""

My heart sank.

"Mark?""

Claire looked uncomfortable.

"Not exactly.""

"What does that mean?""

"The original records show Jonathan Reed requested the change.""

I felt anger rise.

"So he took her.""

"Maybe.""

"Maybe?""

Claire opened another document.

"Because there is something strange.""

"What?""

"Jonathan didn't disappear with Lily.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

"Three months after Lily's birth, Jonathan vanished.""

"Then who had my daughter?""

Claire looked at me.

"The records stop.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Someone erased her.""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

My phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

A photograph.

A young woman.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

Standing outside a coffee shop.

My heart stopped.

Underneath the picture were four words.

*You have your daughter's eyes.*

I couldn't move.

Claire looked at the screen.

"Emily?""

I whispered:

"Who sent this?""

Another message arrived.

*Her name is Lily Reed now.*

My hands covered my mouth.

Lily.

My baby.

Alive.

The next message appeared.

*She thinks you abandoned her.*

The pain was immediate.

"No.""

My voice broke.

"No, I didn't.""

Claire reached for my hand.

"Emily.""

"I didn't leave her.""

"I know.""

"But she doesn't.""

The phone rang.

Same number.

I answered.

Neither of us spoke.

Then a young woman's voice said:

"Are you Emily Carter?""

I couldn't breathe.

"Yes.""

Silence.

Then:

"My whole life, I was told you gave me away.""

Tears filled my eyes.

"No.""

The word came out broken.

"No, I didn't.""

"Then why did you leave?""

I closed my eyes.

Because there was no answer that could explain twenty-nine years.

"I thought you were gone.""

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"You thought I was dead?""

"Yes.""

"Who told you?""

I looked at Claire.

Then at the documents.

"Everyone.""

The young woman laughed softly.

But there was pain in it.

"That's convenient.""

The words hurt.

Because she had every right to hate me.

"Where are you?""

"I can't tell you.""

"Why?""

Another pause.

"Because Mark Carter is looking for me.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"He knows I contacted you.""

I stood.

"How?""

The young woman whispered:

"Because he's been watching me my whole life.""

The call ended.

I looked at Claire.

"Find her.""

"We will.""

"No.""

I grabbed my coat.

"I mean right now.""

"Emily, we need to be careful.""

"I lost twenty-nine years.""

My voice shook.

"I'm not losing another minute.""

That evening, we found Lily.

Not in person.

But through records.

Claire tracked the location from the phone number.

A small apartment.

A city two hours away.

Her daughter.

Two hours away.

After twenty-nine years.

We drove there immediately.

But when we arrived...

The apartment door was open.

Inside was chaos.

A broken lamp.

Papers scattered across the floor.

And on the table was a note.

I picked it up.

My hands trembled.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the message was clear.

*Emily, if you are reading this, Mark found me first.*

My heart stopped.

Below that:

*You need to know the truth. I was never the victim.*

I looked at Claire.

"What does that mean?""

She took the note.

Then looked toward the hallway.

A shadow moved.

Someone was still inside.

A woman's voice whispered:

"Emily?""

I turned.

A young woman stood there.

My daughter.

Alive.

May you like

Terrified.

And holding a secret that could destroy everything.
