Chapter 8: The Girl Who Left a Message
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The name stayed in the air.
Lily Carter.
Nick’s sister.
The girl everyone said was gone.
The girl who had disappeared.
The girl who had left behind a letter.
Thomas looked at Nick.
“Your sister sent it?””
Nick didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
His mind was racing through memories.
Lily sitting beside him.
Lily telling him not to trust everyone.
Lily hiding notebooks under her bed.
Lily whispering:
“Sometimes the truth waits for the right person to find it.””
At the time, Nick thought she was just scared.
Now he wondered if she had been preparing.
Detective Hayes placed another document on the table.
“We traced the account activity.””
Valerie looked at it.
“And?””
“The account was accessed recently.””
“When?””
The detective looked at Nick.
“Two days ago.””
Nick stood.
“Two days?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because Lily is gone.””
Nobody corrected him.
Nobody said the words people usually said.
She’s probably gone.
She’s probably not coming back.
They simply listened.
Because they understood something.
Hope was sometimes the only thing keeping a person alive.
Valerie asked:
“Could someone else have used her account?””
“Yes.””
The detective nodded.
“That’s possible.””
Nick looked relieved for half a second.
Then the detective continued.
“But there’s more.””
He opened another file.
“The login was protected with a password.””
Thomas frowned.
“So?””
“So the password was not random.””
Detective Hayes looked at Nick.
“It was a phrase.””
Nick’s breathing slowed.
“What phrase?””
The detective read from the report.
“Something only Lily would know.””
Nick whispered:
“What was it?””
The detective looked down.
“‘Protect the little ones.’”
Nick closed his eyes.
Because those were Lily’s words.
She had said them every night when they were younger.
When Nick was scared.
When storms shook their old apartment.
When their mother was sick.
Lily always said the same thing.
“Promise me you’ll protect the little ones.””
Nick opened his eyes.
“She knew.””
Valerie moved closer.
“Knew what?””
Nick looked at her.
“She knew something bad was happening.””
Detective Hayes nodded.
“We believe Lily may have created a backup system.””
“A backup system?””
“Files. Messages. Evidence.””
Valerie looked at the folder.
“Where?””
The detective shook his head.
“We don’t know yet.””
Nick suddenly stood.
“I do.””
Everyone looked at him.
He walked to his backpack.
Pulled out an old notebook.
“I thought this was just hers.””
Valerie stared.
“When did you get that?””
“Before I ran.””
He placed it on the table.
“I took it because it was the only thing I had left of her.””
Detective Hayes carefully opened it.
The pages were filled with handwriting.
Names.
Dates.
Locations.
And at the very back…
A drawing.
A small house.
With a tree beside it.
Thomas looked confused.
“What is that?””
Nick touched the page.
“Our childhood home.””
Valerie looked closer.
There was writing underneath.
Tiny letters.
Almost impossible to see.
Detective Hayes used a light from his phone.
The hidden words appeared.
*Under the place where we planted hope.*
Nobody understood.
Except Nick.
His face changed.
“The tree.””
“What tree?”” Thomas asked.
“The tree behind our old house.””
Nick looked at the detective.
“She hid something there.””
The next morning, Detective Hayes arranged for them to visit the property.
The house had been empty for years.
The paint was peeling.
The yard was overgrown.
But the tree remained.
Nick stood in front of it.
He looked smaller than usual.
Like the past had suddenly become too real.
Valerie stayed beside him.
“You don’t have to do this alone.””
Nick nodded.
Then he started digging.
The ground was hard.
The roots were thick.
After several minutes, Thomas noticed something.
“Wait.””
He pointed.
A small metal box was buried beneath the tree.
Nick stopped breathing.
Detective Hayes carefully removed it.
The box was old.
Rust covered the edges.
But the lock was intact.
Inside were dozens of documents.
A flash drive.
And a letter.
The letter had Nick’s name on it.
His hands shook.
He opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
His sister’s.
*Nick,*
*If you are reading this, it means I was right to be afraid.*
His eyes filled instantly.
Valerie looked away, giving him privacy.
Nick continued reading silently.
Then he stopped.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Thomas asked.
Nick looked up.
“There’s a name.””
Detective Hayes stepped closer.
“Whose?””
Nick looked at the letter.
A name written at the bottom.
A name that connected everything.
Daniel Parker.
Valerie felt the world shift.
“My husband?””
Nick nodded slowly.
“But…”
He looked confused.
“Lily wrote this before I ever met you.””
Detective Hayes took the letter.
Everyone waited.
Then he read the final sentence.
And his face turned pale.
*Daniel Parker was not stealing from Valerie. He was helping someone inside Oak Ridge.*
The wind moved through the trees.
Nobody spoke.
Because the truth was becoming bigger than any of them imagined.
Daniel was not the beginning.
He was only one piece.
And whoever was behind Oak Ridge had been hiding for years.
Then Thomas noticed something else inside the box.
A second envelope.
No name.
No address.
May you like
Only three words written across the front.
*For Valerie Parker.*
