Chapter 10: The Man Behind the Curtain

The next morning, Valerie woke up before sunrise.

She had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she heard the recording again.

*“The boy is the only thing that can destroy us.””*

Not Thomas.

Not the documents.

Not the evidence.

Nick.

A twelve-year-old boy who had spent months sleeping on sidewalks was the person someone feared most.

Valerie walked into the kitchen.

Nick was already awake.

He sat at the table with a glass of water in front of him, staring at nothing.

Thomas sat beside him.

Neither boy had touched breakfast.

“You both should be sleeping,” Valerie said softly.

Thomas looked up.

“Couldn’t.””

Nick nodded.

“Me neither.””

Valerie placed three plates on the table.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

It was an ordinary morning.

And that almost hurt more.

Because their lives had become anything but ordinary.

Detective Hayes arrived thirty minutes later.

He looked exhausted.

“I analyzed the recording.””

Valerie immediately stood.

“And?””

He placed a folder on the table.

“The voice has been identified.””

Nick looked up.

“Who is it?””

Detective Hayes hesitated.

Then said:

“Richard Vale.””

Valerie frowned.

“I know that name.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Who is he?””

Valerie’s face slowly changed.

“He’s the founder of Oak Ridge.””

Nick went completely still.

“The founder?””

Detective Hayes nodded.

“He created the organization fifteen years ago. Publicly, he’s known as a child welfare advocate.””

Valerie understood immediately.

A respected man.

A trusted name.

Someone nobody questioned.

“The person everyone trusts,” she whispered.

Detective Hayes nodded.

“Exactly.””

Nick looked at the floor.

“So Lily found out about him.””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel worked for him.””

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

Valerie thought about Daniel.

The expensive suits.

The confident smile.

The way everyone admired him.

She had thought his biggest secret was betrayal.

She was wrong.

He had been part of something much larger.

“What happens now?”” Thomas asked.

Detective Hayes opened the folder.

“We need evidence connecting Richard Vale directly to the crimes.””

Nick frowned.

“But we have the recording.””

“We have a voice.””

Detective Hayes looked serious.

“In court, we need more.””

Valerie understood.

Proof.

Not suspicion.

Not feelings.

Proof.

Nick looked toward the window.

“He’ll come after me.””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew he was right.

Detective Hayes leaned forward.

“That’s why we need to move carefully.””

Nick gave a small laugh.

“Carefully?””

Everyone looked at him.

“I spent months hiding under bridges.””

His voice cracked.

“I know what careful looks like.””

Thomas reached over and touched his shoulder.

Nick looked surprised.

Then he allowed it.

Later that afternoon, Valerie went to her office.

She needed to check the business records.

If Daniel had helped Richard Vale, there might be more connections.

She opened her files.

At first, everything looked normal.

Then she noticed something.

A payment.

Small.

Repeated.

Every month.

A company name she didn’t recognize.

She searched it.

Her blood turned cold.

The company was a shell organization.

Created only to move money.

And the person who authorized the payments?

Daniel Parker.

But underneath his name was another signature.

Richard Vale.

Valerie printed the records.

Then she noticed something else.

A date.

The first payment had been made six years ago.

The same year Lily disappeared.

She grabbed her phone.

“Detective Hayes?””

“Tell me you found something.””

“I did.””

She looked at the documents.

“I think Daniel wasn’t just helping Oak Ridge steal money.””

A pause.

“What do you mean?””

“I think he helped cover up what happened to Lily.””

The detective became silent.

“Send me everything.””

Before Valerie could answer, her office door opened.

She froze.

A man stood there.

Not Daniel.

Not Marcus.

Older.

Calm.

Wearing a perfectly tailored suit.

Richard Vale.

The man whose name had just appeared on her screen.

Valerie slowly stood.

“How did you get in here?””

Richard smiled.

“Your receptionist knows me.””

Of course.

That was the problem.

Everyone knew him.

Everyone trusted him.

“I wanted to speak privately.””

Valerie didn’t move.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Richard looked around her office.

“Your husband made many mistakes.””

Valerie’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew Daniel.””

“I knew everyone at Oak Ridge.””

“And Lily Carter?””

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Valerie saw it.

Recognition.

“You know that name.””

Richard smiled again.

“I know many children’s names.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He stepped closer.

“Mrs. Parker, you seem like a good person.””

Valerie almost laughed.

“Is that supposed to comfort me?””

“No.””

Richard looked toward the window.

“It’s supposed to warn you.””

A cold feeling moved through her.

“About what?””

He turned back.

“Good people often destroy themselves trying to fix things they don’t understand.””

Valerie stared.

“You threatened my son.””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became softer.

“I’m warning you about the boy.””

“Nick?””

“Yes.””

The way he said the name made Valerie’s anger rise.

“You’re afraid of him.””

Richard smiled.

“You think fear is always a weakness.””

“Isn’t it?””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“Sometimes fear is knowing exactly what someone is capable of.””

Valerie’s phone buzzed.

A message from Detective Hayes.

*Call me. Now.*

Richard noticed.

He smiled.

“I should leave.””

Valerie didn’t stop him.

But as he reached the door, he paused.

“One more thing.””

She looked at him.

“Your husband didn’t betray you because he hated you.””

Richard smiled faintly.

“He betrayed you because he was afraid.””

Then he walked away.

Valerie immediately called Detective Hayes.

He answered instantly.

“Are you alone?””

“Yes.””

“Good.””

His voice was tense.

“We have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“We checked the company records.””

Valerie looked at the papers.

“I found them.””

“No.””

The detective paused.

“That’s not the problem.””

“What is?””

A silence.

Then:

“Richard Vale knows Nick is still alive.””

Valerie’s heart stopped.

“How?””

The detective answered quietly.

“Because someone just broke into the evidence storage room.””

She gripped the phone.

“What was stolen?””

The detective didn’t respond immediately.

Then:

“The letter Lily left.””
