Chapter 12: The Night Nick Lost His Sister
Nobody spoke.
The sentence hung between them.
Nick was there.
The night Lily disappeared.
Valerie sat beside him.
“Nick, you don’t have to say anything you’re not ready to say.””
But Nick shook his head.
“I do.””
He looked at Thomas.
“I should have said it before.””
Thomas sat down.
“We’re listening.””
Nick took a deep breath.
And for the first time, he told them the memory he had buried for years.
“I was seven.””
Valerie looked surprised.
“Seven?””
Nick nodded.
“Lily was twelve.””
He stared at the ground.
“She was always protecting me.””
The same way he had protected Thomas.
“She knew things were wrong before anyone else.””
Nick remembered.
The late nights.
The whispers.
The papers hidden beneath her mattress.
“She told me not to tell anyone.””
“Why?””
“Because she didn’t know who to trust.””
That sentence hurt everyone.
A child who couldn’t find a safe adult.
Nick continued.
“The night she disappeared, she woke me up.””
His voice became quieter.
“She told me we had to leave.””
Thomas leaned forward.
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
Nick shook his head.
“She had a plan.””
They had packed small bags.
Only what they could carry.
Lily held his hand.
She told him:
“We’re going somewhere people can’t hurt us.””
But they never made it.
“Someone was waiting.””
Valerie’s heart tightened.
“Who?””
Nick closed his eyes.
“I didn’t see his face.””
A pause.
“But I heard his voice.””
Detective Hayes looked up.
“Whose?””
Nick whispered:
“Daniel’s.””
The room froze.
Valerie felt sick.
“No.””
Nick looked at her.
“I know what it sounds like.””
“Nick…”
“I’m sorry.””
He looked down.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want Thomas to lose his father.””
Thomas stared.
“You protected me?””
Nick nodded.
“Because I knew what it felt like.””
The pain in his voice was impossible to ignore.
Detective Hayes asked carefully:
“What happened next?””
Nick swallowed.
“Lily told me to run.””
“What?””
“She pushed me away.””
He wiped his eyes.
“She said, ‘Nick, whatever happens, don’t let them take you too.’”
Valerie covered her mouth.
“And you ran?””
Nick nodded.
“I hid.””
He looked ashamed.
“I heard shouting.””
“What did you hear?””
Nick closed his eyes.
“Lily saying someone’s name.””
“Whose?””
He looked at the photograph.
“Richard.””
The detective immediately wrote it down.
“Then what?””
“Then everything went quiet.””
Nobody moved.
“I waited until morning.””
Nick’s voice broke.
“Then I ran.””
Valerie reached for his hand.
This time, he let her.
“You were a child.””
Nick shook his head.
“I left her.””
“No.””
Valerie’s voice was firm.
“You survived.””
Nick looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed to consider that possibility.
Detective Hayes stood.
“This changes everything.””
Thomas looked at him.
“How?””
“Because Nick isn’t just a witness.””
He looked at Nick.
“He is the only living person who can place Richard and Daniel together that night.””
A knock interrupted them.
Everyone froze.
The officers outside moved immediately.
A voice came through the door.
“Mrs. Parker?””
Valerie looked at Detective Hayes.
“Who is it?””
The officer outside answered.
“It’s a woman.””
“Name?””
A pause.
Then:
“She says her name is Emily Carter.””
Nick stopped breathing.
The color disappeared from his face.
“My aunt.””
Valerie opened the door.
A woman stood outside.
Older.
Tired.
Eyes filled with years of searching.
She looked at Nick.
And whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Nick couldn’t move.
Neither could she.
Then the woman covered her mouth.
“I thought I’d never see you again.””
And Nick finally broke.
He ran forward.
May you like
For the first time in years…
Someone from his past held him like he had never been lost.
