Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Left Behind
The room became smaller the moment I saw the gun.
Not because of the weapon.
Because of who was holding it.
Richard stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
Beside him stood Detective Harris.
The woman who had walked into my house wearing a badge.
The woman I almost trusted.
I looked at her.
“Who are you?””
She didn’t answer.
Richard smiled.
“That’s the problem with you, Ryan.””
I tightened my grip around the video recorder.
“What?””
“You always believe people are what they say they are.””
His eyes moved to Vanessa.
“She learned that lesson too late.””
Vanessa stepped in front of Emma.
“You’re not taking her.””
Richard’s expression softened.
Almost sadly.
“Vanessa.””
The way he said her name made me sick.
Like he was speaking to a child.
“You still don’t understand.””
“No,” she said.
Her voice was stronger than I had heard it all night.
“I understand everything now.””
Richard looked disappointed.
“Do you?””
He raised the gun slightly.
The movement was small.
But everyone noticed.
Emma grabbed my hand.
I moved closer to her.
Richard watched.
“You really think you’re protecting her.””
I looked at him.
“I am.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His eyes moved toward the screen.
“You’re protecting a story.””
I glanced at the video recorder.
My father’s face was frozen on the screen.
A man I hadn’t seen in twenty years.
A man I thought I lost.
A man who had left behind answers instead of a goodbye.
Richard stepped into the hidden room.
“You want the truth?””
“Yes.””
“Then listen carefully.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You don’t know how to tell the truth.””
Richard ignored her.
“You think your father was a hero.””
I said nothing.
“Maybe he was.””
The admission surprised me.
Then he continued.
“But heroes make mistakes.””
My jaw tightened.
“What mistake?””
Richard looked at me.
“He trusted the wrong people.””
A sound came from behind me.
The passage door.
Someone else was coming.
Richard noticed.
His expression changed.
“Where is Sarah?””
Nobody answered.
His eyes moved to Emma.
“Where is she?””
Emma hid behind me.
“She’s not yours.””
Richard’s face darkened.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
“Yes, I do.””
The little girl’s voice shook.
“But Mommy told me.””
Everyone went silent.
Richard stared.
“What did she tell you?””
Emma looked at him.
“She said you would pretend to be nice.””
For the first time, Richard looked angry.
Not annoyed.
Not controlled.
Angry.
“She said you would say you were helping.””
Emma’s voice grew stronger.
“She said you would say everyone else was lying.””
Vanessa looked at her.
Pride and sadness crossed her face.
Richard stared at the child.
Then at me.
“You see what happens?””
I didn’t respond.
“She’s been taught what to think.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Richard raised an eyebrow.
“Then what?””
“She remembers.””
The words surprised him.
Because they were true.
Emma wasn’t repeating someone else’s story.
She was telling us what she survived.
Richard looked at Detective Harris.
“Do something.””
The detective remained still.
That bothered me.
Because it meant she wasn’t following orders.
She was waiting.
I looked at her.
“You’re not a detective.””
Her expression didn’t change.
Richard smiled.
“Very good.””
I felt anger rising.
“You used a fake officer.””
“Not fake.””
The woman finally spoke.
Her voice was calm.
“I’m a former investigator.””
I stared.
“Then why are you helping him?””
She looked at Richard.
Then at me.
“Because I know what happened.””
Richard looked pleased.
“And now she’ll tell you.””
The woman stepped forward.
“My name is Claire.””
The room went silent.
Emma immediately grabbed Vanessa’s hand.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“Claire?””
The same woman who had been outside our door.
The same woman Sarah had feared.
The same woman Richard had worked with.
Claire looked at Emma.
“I’m not here to hurt you.””
Emma shook her head.
“You always say that.””
Claire’s face changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
For one second.
Then it disappeared.
“I made mistakes.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Mistakes?””
Her voice was full of disbelief.
“You helped him destroy my sister.””
Claire looked away.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“By helping Richard?””
“No.””
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“By trying to control the damage.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked between them.
This was what Richard wanted.
Confusion.
Too many versions of the truth.
Too many people claiming they were the victim.
I raised the recorder.
“My father left a message.””
Richard’s eyes immediately moved to it.
That was the reaction I needed.
He was afraid of what was on it.
“What did he say?””
I smiled slightly.
“You tell me.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Ryan.””
“No.””
I pressed play again.
My father’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, Richard has probably convinced you that he was protecting people.””
Richard’s face changed.
The recording continued.
“He will say he made difficult choices.””
A pause.
“He will say everything he did was necessary.””
My father’s voice became quieter.
“Don’t believe him.””
Richard stepped forward.
“Turn that off.””
I ignored him.
“He was never trying to protect children.””
My father’s voice shook.
“He was protecting himself.””
The recording continued.
“Ryan, there is something you need to understand.””
I looked at Vanessa.
At Emma.
At the people around me.
“This began before you were born.””
The room went silent.
“Your mother discovered Richard was using the family company to move children through illegal adoption networks.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Emma looked confused.
My hands went cold.
My father continued.
“We tried to expose him.””
A pause.
“Sarah helped us.””
I looked at Richard.
He stared at the floor.
“My father, Sarah, and I collected evidence.””
The recording crackled.
“But Richard found out.””
The next words were almost a whisper.
“He burned our house because he believed the evidence was inside.””
I stopped breathing.
The fire.
My childhood home.
The accident.
It was all a lie.
My father continued.
“He didn’t know I had already hidden a copy.””
I looked at the hidden room.
The evidence.
The proof.
“And I didn’t know Sarah had survived.””
Vanessa started crying.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Richard laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone looked at him.
“You think this changes anything?””
I stared.
“What?””
“You think a recording from a dead man wins?””
Claire looked uncomfortable.
“Richard.””
He ignored her.
“You have no idea what you found.””
I stepped closer.
“I found the truth.””
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“You found pieces.””
He looked at Emma.
“The full truth is much uglier.””
Emma squeezed Vanessa’s hand.
“What does that mean?””
Richard smiled.
“It means your precious mother wasn’t innocent.””
Vanessa froze.
“Don’t.””
Richard looked at me.
“Ask Sarah where she was the night your father died.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Richard continued.
“She wasn’t running from me.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“You’re lying.””
Richard smiled.
“Am I?””
The hidden passage suddenly filled with a sound.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked around.
Not mine.
Not Vanessa’s.
Richard reached into his coat.
He pulled out a phone.
The screen showed one name.
*Sarah.*
Nobody moved.
Richard answered.
“Hello, Sarah.””
My blood ran cold.
A voice came through the speaker.
“Ryan is there, isn’t he?””
I stepped forward.
“Sarah?””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
Richard smiled.
“She wants to tell you something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He handed the phone slightly forward.
Sarah’s voice came through.
“Ryan…”
Her voice was broken.
“There’s something I never told you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Sarah continued.
“Your father didn’t die trying to save me.””
Silence.
May you like
The next words destroyed everything.
“He died because he found out what I had done.””
