Chapter 3: The Woman Outside the Door
The voice outside my front door knew exactly how to hurt me.
Not because she threatened me.
Not because she screamed.
Because she sounded calm.
Like someone who had rehearsed those words for years.
“Or I’ll tell Ryan what you did to her mother.””
The sentence hung in the air.
Nobody moved.
Not Vanessa.
Not Emma.
Not me.
Then Emma grabbed my shirt.
“Don’t let her in.””
I looked down at the little girl.
Her face was covered in tears.
“Who is she?””
Emma shook her head.
“She’s not supposed to find me.””
A sharp knock hit the door.
This time, harder.
“Vanessa,” the woman called.
“I know you can hear me.””
My wife grabbed my arm.
“Take Emma upstairs.””
I looked at her.
The anger inside me was fighting with something else.
Confusion.
Fear.
Because five minutes ago, I thought Vanessa was the person I needed to protect Emma from.
Now she looked like someone trying to protect her from something worse.
“Why should I trust you?”” I asked.
The question hurt her.
I saw it.
But I didn’t take it back.
“You lied to me for six years.””
“I know.””
“You hid a child in our wall.””
“I know.””
“You made me think I was losing my mind.””
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
“I know.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I hate myself for it every day.””
Another knock.
The woman outside laughed softly.
“Vanessa, don’t make this difficult.””
Emma immediately covered her ears.
I noticed something.
She wasn’t just scared of the woman.
She knew her.
She remembered her.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is she?””
My wife whispered:
“Her name is Claire.””
The name meant nothing to me.
But Emma reacted.
Her whole body stiffened.
“Claire took Mommy away.””
My heart stopped.
I looked at Emma.
“What?””
She stared at the floor.
“Before the wall.””
The words were so quiet I almost missed them.
Before the wall.
That meant there was a time before this.
A time when this nightmare began.
Vanessa walked toward the stairs.
“Ryan, please.””
I didn’t move.
“What happened to Emma’s mother?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Then back at me.
“Her name was Sarah.””
The woman outside knocked again.
“Vanessa.””
My wife closed her eyes.
“Sarah was my sister.””
The room felt smaller.
I stared at her.
“Your sister?””
She nodded.
“Emma is my niece.””
I looked at the little girl.
She was watching me carefully.
Waiting to see what I would do.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
She swallowed.
“Of losing you.””
I almost laughed.
The sound would have been cruel.
But I couldn’t stop myself.
“You thought telling me the truth would make me leave?””
“Yes.””
“So you decided to hide a child instead?””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From Claire?””
Vanessa nodded.
The woman outside suddenly spoke louder.
“Ryan?””
My body went rigid.
How did she know my name?
Vanessa grabbed my hand.
“Don’t answer.””
I stared at the door.
“Why does she know who I am?””
No response.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at me.
“She’s been watching us.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“For how long?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
The woman outside knocked one more time.
Then something slid beneath the door.
A photograph.
I walked toward it.
“Ryan, don’t.””
But I was already picking it up.
It was an old picture.
A family photo.
A woman I didn’t recognize stood in the middle.
She had dark hair and tired eyes.
Beside her was a young Emma.
And beside them…
Vanessa.
The three of them were smiling.
On the back of the photograph was writing.
*You can’t erase family.*
My fingers tightened around it.
“Vanessa.””
She didn’t respond.
“Who is Claire?””
My wife looked at the door.
“She was Sarah’s best friend.””
“Was?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Before Sarah died.””
The house went silent.
I looked at Emma.
“Your mother is dead?””
The little girl nodded.
“She told me to run.””
My throat tightened.
“What?””
Emma looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“She said Claire was bad.””
Vanessa sat down on the stairs.
Her face was broken.
“She was right.””
I turned toward her.
“Tell me everything.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Six years ago, Sarah called me in the middle of the night.””
The woman outside interrupted.
“Vanessa.””
Nobody moved.
My wife continued.
“She was crying. She said Claire had been taking money from her. She said Claire was dangerous.””
I looked at the door.
“Why didn’t she call the police?””
“She tried.””
“And?””
Vanessa looked at Emma.
“Claire convinced everyone Sarah was unstable.””
My stomach twisted.
“She made people believe her?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was good at making people doubt Sarah.””
Another knock.
This one was gentle.
Almost friendly.
“Ryan,” Claire called.
“You don’t know what Vanessa has done.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked back at me.
For the first time, I saw something that bothered me.
Not guilt.
Not fear.
Regret.
Like she knew she had made mistakes.
But she also knew Claire was telling the truth about one thing.
Vanessa had done something.
The door handle moved.
Someone was trying to open it.
I stepped back.
“Did you lock it?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Deadbolt.””
The handle stopped.
Then Claire sighed.
“Vanessa, you always were dramatic.””
Emma grabbed my hand.
“She talks nice before she gets angry.””
The words were simple.
But they told me everything.
A child doesn’t learn that from one bad day.
She learns it from experience.
I moved Emma toward the stairs.
“Go upstairs.””
She looked terrified.
“No.””
“Emma.””
“She’ll find me.””
“I won’t let her.””
It was the first promise I made to her.
And I meant it.
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
Vanessa followed us upstairs.
As we reached the hallway, I stopped.
“Where is the entrance to the wall?””
She looked confused.
“What?””
“The passage.””
Her face changed.
“You need to know?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if someone comes looking for her, I want to know every place she can hide.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she slowly walked toward the bedroom.
Behind the closet.
She pushed aside the wooden panel.
The narrow passage appeared.
I looked inside.
It was longer than I expected.
Not just a small space.
It stretched behind the walls.
Like someone had built a secret hallway through our house.
My skin crawled.
“How long does this go?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Through the whole first floor.””
I looked at her.
“Who built this?””
She didn’t answer.
That silence was terrifying.
Before I could ask again, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One photo appeared.
My hands went cold.
It was a picture of me.
Taken yesterday.
Standing outside my house.
I looked at the timestamp.
2:17 p.m.
I had been alone.
Or I thought I had.
A second message appeared.
*You should ask your wife why she really kept Emma hidden.*
Then another.
*Because the girl in the wall is not the only secret in that house.*
I looked up.
Vanessa was staring at my phone.
She knew.
“Ryan…”
I held the phone up.
“What else haven’t you told me?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, we heard a sound downstairs.
The front door.
Opening.
Slowly.
Vanessa’s face went completely white.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“You said it was locked.””
“It was.””
A shadow moved across the hallway floor below.
Someone had entered our house.
Emma grabbed my hand.
And whispered the words that made my blood run cold.
“Daddy…”
I turned.
She was staring at the person coming up the stairs.
“It’s not Claire.””
My heart stopped.
“Then who is it?””
May you like
Emma’s lips trembled.
“The person who put me in the wall.””
