Thinking

Chapter 5: The Marriage Built on a Lie

I couldn’t move.

Richard’s words kept repeating in my head.

*The first time Vanessa met you, she already knew exactly who you were.*

The man standing in my hallway had spent years manipulating people.

I knew that.

I knew he was dangerous.

But somehow, that sentence hurt more than everything else.

Because it wasn’t a threat.

It was a question.

A question I was afraid to answer.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Ryan…”

“No.””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

She looked down.

“Please let me explain.””

Richard gave a quiet laugh.

“Explain?””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

For the first time, her anger showed.

Real anger.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Hatred.

Richard only smiled.

“You still think you can control this.””

I stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Both of them looked at me.

I pointed at Richard.

“You don’t get to stand in my house and tell me anything like you’re the victim.””

Then I looked at Vanessa.

“And you don’t get to keep hiding things.””

The silence afterward was painful.

Because they both knew I was right.

I looked at the bedroom floor.

“The box.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Ryan.””

“Where is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Where?””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Under the floorboard.””

I stared at her.

“You knew it was there this whole time?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“How many secrets are there?””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I don’t know anymore.””

That answer frightened me.

More than a lie would have.

I walked into the bedroom.

The room that was supposed to be ours.

The room where we had whispered about our future.

Where we brought Lily home for the first time.

Where I thought I knew my wife.

I looked at the floor.

“How?””

Vanessa followed slowly.

“Sarah hid it before she died.””

I turned.

“Your sister hid evidence under our bedroom?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She knew Richard would search everywhere else.””

“And she trusted you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you keep it from me?””

Vanessa looked away.

Richard appeared at the bedroom doorway.

“She didn’t keep it from you.””

I looked at him.

“Leave.””

He ignored me.

“She used it.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Richard smiled.

“Ask your wife why she married you.””

My chest tightened.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me.””

She stayed silent.

That silence was becoming unbearable.

“Tell me!””

My voice echoed through the room.

Lily, standing near the hallway, jumped.

I immediately regretted shouting.

I lowered my voice.

“Please.””

Vanessa looked at Emma.

Then at me.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

She sat on the edge of the bed.

“I met you eight months before we got married.””

“I know.””

“You think you know.””

Her words hurt.

Because they sounded like Richard.

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“When I met you, I was looking for someone.””

I stared at her.

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked at Emma.

“Someone who could help me protect her.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found your name in Sarah’s notes.””

The room went silent.

“My name?””

“She wrote about you.””

I shook my head.

“I never met Sarah.””

“No.””

Vanessa looked down.

“But Sarah knew you.””

I felt dizzy.

“How?””

“She had been following Richard’s financial records.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that have to do with me?””

Vanessa looked at Richard.

“Everything.””

Richard leaned against the doorframe.

“Finally.””

I ignored him.

“Vanessa.””

She whispered:

“Your father worked for my father.””

The room stopped.

I stared.

“What?””

“My father owned the company where your father worked.””

I felt something inside me shift.

“My father died when I was twelve.””

“I know.””

“How?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Because Sarah investigated it.””

The words came slowly.

Like every sentence hurt.

“Your father didn’t die in a random accident.””

I stopped breathing.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I’m saying Richard was involved.””

The room became silent.

Even Richard stopped smiling.

I looked at him.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

That was the first time I saw him hesitate.

And that was enough.

I stepped back.

“No.””

My mind searched for another explanation.

Any explanation.

“My father’s death was investigated.””

Vanessa nodded.

“By people Richard controlled.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

I looked at Lily.

At Emma.

At the house.

Everything I thought was separate suddenly connected.

My wife.

Her family.

My past.

This house.

The wall.

The box.

The reason she chose me.

“What was in the box?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

“Of everything.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You don’t want to open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face hardened.

“Because once you know the truth, you can’t go back.””

I stared at the man who had entered my home like he owned it.

Then I grabbed the tool box from the closet.

Vanessa watched me.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

I knelt beside the floorboard.

“I spent six years believing my wife was honest.””

My hands shook as I removed the loose wood.

“I spent three weeks believing I was going crazy.””

I pulled up the floorboard.

“And now I’m supposed to be afraid of the truth?””

Inside the hidden space was a small metal box.

Old.

Rusty.

Covered in dust.

Emma gasped.

“That’s it.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Richard’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Panic.

I pulled the box out.

It was heavier than I expected.

A small lock hung from the front.

Vanessa whispered:

“Sarah’s key is inside.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She gave it to me.””

“Where is it?””

She reached into her necklace.

A tiny silver key hung from the chain.

I stared.

“You carried it all these years?””

She nodded.

“Every day.””

“Why?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because I was waiting for the courage to open it.””

Richard suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast for a man his age.

He reached toward the box.

I pulled it away.

Vanessa stepped in front of him.

“No.””

Richard stopped.

His face changed.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.””

Vanessa’s voice was cold.

“For once, I do.””

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Everyone froze.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

A small recorder.

And an envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not Emma’s.

Mine.

My hands went cold.

I looked at Vanessa.

“When did Sarah write this?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

But it destroyed everything.

*Ryan Mitchell, if you are reading this, it means Vanessa found you.*

I looked up.

Vanessa started crying.

I read the next line.

*I’m sorry she lied to you. She believed it was the only way to keep you alive.*

My eyes moved down.

And then I saw the final sentence.

The sentence that made my entire body go numb.

*Because the man you call your father did not die in an accident. He died because he discovered what Richard was doing to children like Emma.*

I slowly lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

Then the recorder inside the box suddenly turned on.

A woman’s voice filled the bedroom.

Sarah’s voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

“Vanessa… if you’re hearing this, it means I didn’t make it.””

Vanessa collapsed onto the floor.

The recording continued.

“And if Ryan is there with you…”

A pause.

Then:

“Please tell him the truth.””

My hand tightened around the recorder.

Sarah’s voice became quieter.

“Tell him he was never chosen because of his family.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

“Tell him…”

Static filled the room.

Then Sarah said the words that made Richard take a step backward.

“Tell him his father wasn’t the only person who survived that night.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Then Emma whispered:

“Daddy…”

I turned toward her.

She was staring at Richard.

May you like

And she said:

“He knows where my mommy is.””
