Thinking

Chapter 8: The House That Burned Twice

The darkness lasted only three seconds.

But three seconds was enough.

Enough for fear to enter.

Enough for someone to move.

Enough for everything to change.

The first thing I heard was Emma screaming.

“Daddy!””

Then Vanessa’s voice.

“Ryan!””

I reached out blindly.

My hand hit the wall.

The bedroom was completely dark.

No lights.

No television.

No moonlight through the curtains.

Nothing.

Then something crashed downstairs.

Glass breaking.

Someone shouting.

The police had arrived.

Or someone wanted us to think they had.

“Everyone stay together,” I whispered.

I could barely hear my own voice.

Vanessa grabbed my hand.

“I have Emma.””

“Where is Richard?””

No answer.

That scared me.

Because Richard had been standing right in front of us.

Then the emergency lights flickered on.

A weak red glow filled the hallway.

And Richard was gone.

I stared at the empty space where he had been.

“He left.””

Vanessa looked around.

“How?””

I didn’t know.

But I knew one thing.

A man like Richard didn’t disappear by accident.

He disappeared because he had a plan.

The sound of footsteps came from downstairs.

Multiple footsteps.

Heavy.

Organized.

Someone called out.

“Ryan Mitchell?””

My stomach tightened.

The voice sounded official.

But after everything that happened tonight, I trusted nothing.

“Who is that?”” Vanessa whispered.

I shook my head.

“No idea.””

The voice came again.

“Mr. Mitchell, this is Detective Harris. We need everyone to come downstairs.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Detective?””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Why would the police be here already?””

She didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Richard had planned this.

I moved toward the bedroom door.

Vanessa stopped me.

“Ryan.””

I looked back.

She was holding Emma’s hand.

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked completely helpless.

Not because she was weak.

Because she was finally out of lies.

“I’m sorry.””

The words caught me off guard.

I didn’t know what to say.

“For what?””

She looked at me.

“For making you part of this.””

I stared at her.

“You didn’t make me.””

A bitter smile crossed her face.

“I did.””

Then she looked at Emma.

“I brought you into a life built on secrets.””

Emma squeezed her hand.

“You saved me.””

Vanessa started crying.

A child forgiving an adult was something I never expected to see.

And somehow, it hurt more.

A knock came from downstairs.

“Mr. Mitchell?””

The voice was louder.

Impatient.

I walked to the stairs.

“Stay here.””

Vanessa nodded.

I moved slowly down.

Every step felt heavier.

The living room was different.

Wrong.

The front door was open.

Cold air moved through the house.

Two people stood near the entrance.

A man and a woman.

Both wearing police uniforms.

The woman stepped forward.

“Ryan Mitchell?””

“Yes.””

She showed a badge.

“Detective Harris.””

I looked at the badge.

Then at her face.

Something felt wrong.

“What happened?””

She glanced upstairs.

“We received a report about a missing child.””

My expression changed.

“A report?””

“Yes.””

“From who?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough.

“Who reported it?””

The detective looked toward the hallway.

Then back at me.

“Richard Carter.””

Of course.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was exactly what I expected.

“He called you?””

“Yes.””

“And what did he say?””

The detective watched me carefully.

“He said you discovered evidence connected to an old kidnapping.””

I almost laughed again.

“He said that?””

She nodded.

I looked around.

At my house.

At the room where Emma had been hidden.

At the people who came after Richard vanished.

“He’s trying to frame me.””

The detective’s expression didn’t change.

“Is that what happened?””

“Yes.””

“Then explain.””

I wanted to.

I wanted to tell her everything.

The wall.

The box.

Sarah.

Richard.

But then I saw something.

A tiny movement.

The other officer standing near the door.

He wasn’t watching me.

He was watching upstairs.

Toward Emma.

And there was no curiosity in his eyes.

There was recognition.

I immediately knew.

He wasn’t here to help.

I stepped backward.

“Who is he?””

Detective Harris looked confused.

“Who?””

I pointed.

“The other officer.””

She turned.

The man’s expression changed instantly.

Only slightly.

But enough.

He reached inside his jacket.

Vanessa shouted from upstairs.

“Ryan!””

Everything happened at once.

The fake officer pulled something from his coat.

I grabbed the nearest object.

A wooden chair.

The man rushed forward.

Detective Harris yelled.

“Stop!””

The fake officer shoved her aside.

Vanessa came down the stairs with Emma behind her.

“Run!””

We didn’t think.

We moved.

I grabbed Emma’s hand.

We ran toward the kitchen.

The back door.

Anywhere away from him.

Behind us, shouting filled the house.

The fake officer chased us.

“Ryan!””

I turned.

He wasn’t chasing me.

He was chasing Emma.

That confirmed everything.

We reached the kitchen.

The back door was locked.

I pulled.

Nothing.

Vanessa looked around desperately.

“There.””

She pointed to the basement door.

My stomach dropped.

“The basement?””

“It connects to the old passage.””

I looked at Emma.

The basement.

The place where Vanessa found her.

The place where her nightmare began.

But we had no choice.

We opened the door.

Cold air rushed upward.

Emma froze.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Emma.””

She shook her head.

“I don’t want to go down there.””

I crouched.

“I know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But I need you to trust me.””

She looked at me.

“Like Mommy?””

I nodded.

“Like Mommy.””

Slowly, she stepped down.

We followed.

The basement smelled exactly like the passage.

Damp.

Old.

Forgotten.

Vanessa closed the door behind us.

The footsteps upstairs grew louder.

“He’ll find us.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where does this lead?””

She pointed toward the wall.

“There’s another exit.””

We moved through the basement.

Behind us, the door opened.

The fake officer entered.

“Vanessa.””

His voice echoed.

“Bring me the girl.””

Emma stopped.

Because she recognized him.

Not from fear.

From memory.

I looked at her.

“Who is he?””

Her lips trembled.

“He was there.””

“Where?””

“When Mommy disappeared.””

Vanessa went pale.

“Who is he?””

Emma whispered:

“He helped Grandpa.””

The man stepped closer.

His footsteps moved toward us.

I pushed open the hidden passage.

Inside was darkness.

We entered.

The wall closed behind us.

For several seconds, we heard nothing.

Then the man spoke.

“You can’t hide in there.””

His voice changed.

No more pretending.

No more calm.

“You never learned, Vanessa.””

We moved deeper.

The passage was narrow.

But unlike before, it didn’t feel like a prison.

It felt like a way out.

Then Emma stopped.

She looked at the wall.

“What?””

She touched the wood.

“Here.””

I moved closer.

There was a small marking carved into it.

A symbol.

The same one on the box.

Vanessa stared.

“I’ve never seen that.””

Emma whispered:

“My mommy showed me.””

She pressed the symbol.

A hidden door clicked open.

Behind it was a small room.

Inside were papers.

Photographs.

A computer.

And a newspaper clipping.

I picked it up.

The headline made my blood run cold.

*LOCAL MAN KILLED IN HOUSE FIRE. FAMILY CLAIMS ACCIDENT.*

The photograph underneath was my childhood home.

Burned to the ground.

I read the date.

Twenty years ago.

Then I saw the name.

*Daniel Mitchell.*

My father.

Vanessa stepped beside me.

“Ryan…”

I looked around the hidden room.

My childhood memories.

My father’s death.

Richard.

Sarah.

Everything.

It all connected here.

Then I noticed something on the desk.

A video recorder.

With a note attached.

My name was written on it.

I pressed play.

The screen flickered.

A man appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My father.

My knees almost gave out.

“Ryan,” he said.

“If you’re watching this, then Richard failed.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My father looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to know the truth.””

The recording continued.

“Your mother and I didn’t die because of an accident.””

A pause.

“We were trying to expose Richard.””

The screen flickered.

Then my father said the words that changed my understanding of everything.

“Ryan, Vanessa is not the only person who protected Emma.””

He leaned closer.

“Your mother did too.””

The recording stopped.

Behind us, the hidden door slowly opened.

And a familiar voice whispered:

“You finally found it.””

I turned.

Richard stood there.

Holding a gun.

May you like

And beside him…

Was Detective Harris.
