Chapter 9: The Truth Before Caleb

The name on the paper meant nothing to Adrian.

And somehow, that terrified him more than if he had recognized it.

*Dr. Samuel Voss.*

A stranger.

A doctor.

A person who had somehow been connected to Caleb’s birth.

Adrian stood in the kitchen, holding Vanessa’s letter with shaking hands.

For days, he had believed he was chasing one truth.

Now he realized there had always been another one hidden underneath.

Not just what happened to Caleb.

But how Caleb came into the world.

And why so many people had fought to keep the truth buried.

Adrian immediately called Officer Ramirez.

The officer answered on the second ring.

“Adrian?””

“You need to find someone.””

A pause.

“Who?””

“Dr. Samuel Voss.””

The name was followed by silence.

A silence that made Adrian’s stomach tighten.

“You know him?””

Officer Ramirez exhaled.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“He was mentioned in the original investigation.””

Adrian froze.

“What investigation?””

“The one before Caleb was born.””

The words hit him.

Before Caleb was born.

A part of the story everyone had ignored.

“Tell me everything.””

Officer Ramirez arrived thirty minutes later.

He carried another folder.

Another file.

Another piece of the past.

“I should have found this earlier,” he said.

Adrian looked at him.

“What is it?””

“Records from the hospital where Caleb was born.””

Adrian opened the folder.

The first page was a medical report.

The second was a consent form.

The third was a handwritten note.

He read the name again.

Dr. Samuel Voss.

“Who was he?””

Officer Ramirez sat down.

“He was a fertility specialist.””

Adrian looked up.

“What?””

“He worked with families struggling to have children.””

Adrian’s mind raced.

Vanessa had told him for years that Caleb’s birth was a miracle.

That they had almost lost hope.

That becoming parents had been the happiest moment of their lives.

But now he wondered how much of that story was real.

“Was Caleb conceived through treatment?””

“Yes.””

Adrian stared.

“Vanessa never told me.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

“That’s what we need to find out.””

Adrian continued reading.

Then he saw something.

A signature.

His eyes narrowed.

“This isn’t my signature.””

Officer Ramirez looked.

“No.””

Adrian pointed.

“My name is on this.””

The document showed Adrian Miller.

But the signature was different.

Someone had signed for him.

Someone had pretended to be him.

His hands tightened.

“Someone used my identity.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Officer Ramirez looked at the report.

“We believe it was arranged through the clinic.””

Adrian stood.

“So someone knew.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

Then answered.

“Vanessa.””

The room became silent.

Again.

Always Vanessa.

But this time, something was different.

Because Adrian suddenly understood something.

The lies weren’t created after Caleb was born.

They started before.

Years before.

When Caleb was just a possibility.

That evening, Adrian found Vanessa.

She was sitting in a small hotel room across town.

Not hiding.

Not running.

Just sitting.

Like someone who had finally run out of places to escape.

When she saw him, she didn’t look surprised.

“You found it.””

Adrian held up the folder.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I knew this day would come.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She swallowed.

“You deserve the truth.””

Adrian almost laughed.

“The truth?””

His voice was quiet.

“I spent five years believing I had it.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

He stepped closer.

“You don’t know what it feels like to find out your entire life might have been built on lies.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I was afraid.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I was.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“When we found out we might not be able to have children, I was devastated.””

Adrian remembered.

He remembered Vanessa crying in their bedroom.

He remembered promising they would be okay.

“I wanted a family,” she whispered.

“We both did.””

“Yes.””

She paused.

“And then I met Dr. Voss.””

Adrian listened.

“He offered a solution.””

“A fertility treatment?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He said there was a chance.””

“What kind of chance?””

Her silence answered before her words did.

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Vanessa.””

She looked up.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“What does that mean?””

“Dr. Voss said the process was confidential.””

Adrian stared.

“You used someone else’s DNA?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I thought it would never matter.””

That sentence destroyed something inside him.

“Never matter?””

She shook her head.

“I thought love would be enough.””

Adrian looked away.

Because the cruelest part was that she was right about one thing.

Love had been enough.

For him.

He had loved Caleb completely.

But love did not erase deception.

“Who was the donor?”” Adrian asked.

Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel Brooks.””

The name again.

The man whose existence had been hidden.

The man who had never known his son.

“So Ethan was right.””

“Yes.””

“And you knew.””

“I found out later.””

“When?””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“After Caleb was born.””

Adrian looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because by then…”

She stopped.

“By then what?””

“By then you were his father.””

The words were painful.

Because they were true.

Adrian was his father.

But he deserved the choice.

“I should have known.””

“Yes.””

“I should have decided.””

“Yes.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was selfish.””

For once, she didn’t defend herself.

She didn’t explain.

She admitted it.

And somehow, that hurt more.

“Then why try to destroy us?””

Vanessa looked confused.

“I never wanted to destroy you.””

“Your mother did.””

“She did.””

“Nathan did.””

“Yes.””

“And you let them.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“That if you learned the truth, you would leave.””

Adrian looked at her.

“And your solution was to make me leave anyway?””

Vanessa couldn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

A long silence passed.

Then Vanessa reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this yesterday.””

Adrian looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Something Dr. Voss left behind.””

“Why would he leave something?””

“Because he knew people would eventually find out.””

Adrian opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was old.

The first line made his heart stop.

*To the father who raises this child,*

Adrian continued reading.

The letter explained everything.

Dr. Voss had discovered irregularities in the clinic records years later.

He realized the donor information had been manipulated.

He realized Vanessa had been given false assurances.

But the final paragraph was what mattered.

*The child was never the mistake. The adults around him were.*

Adrian stared.

Then he saw the final sentence.

*I tried to tell Vanessa the truth, but someone stopped me.*

Adrian looked up.

“Someone stopped him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That’s why I disappeared.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“Because I found out who.””

Adrian felt a chill.

“Who?””

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“It wasn’t my mother.””

“It wasn’t Nathan.””

“Then who?””

She looked directly at him.

“The person who paid Dr. Voss to change the records.””

Adrian waited.

Vanessa whispered the name.

And this time…

Adrian knew it.

Because it was someone who had been part of his life for years.

Someone he had trusted.

Someone who had been standing beside his family all along.

“Adrian…”

Her voice broke.

“The person who erased the truth about Caleb…”

May you like

A pause.

“…was your own brother.””
