Chapter 7: The Therapist Who Knew Too Much
Adrian stared at the frozen image on the screen.
The man standing near the fence.
The man watching Caleb.
The man who had spent hours sitting across from his son, asking him questions, telling him everything was safe.
Dr. Nathan Reed.
Caleb’s therapist.
For a moment, Adrian couldn’t speak.
Because his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
Nathan had been the person Vanessa recommended after Caleb started having nightmares two years earlier.
“He’s patient,” Vanessa had said.
“He understands children.””
“He’ll help Caleb open up.””
Adrian remembered shaking Nathan’s hand.
He remembered trusting him.
Now that trust felt like another thing that had been taken from him.
“How long has he known?”” Adrian asked.
Officer Ramirez looked at the screen.
“That’s what we need to find out.””
Adrian turned.
“Need to find out?””
His voice rose.
“He was standing in my backyard while my son was outside alone.””
“I understand.””
“No, you don’t.””
The officer stayed quiet.
Adrian pointed at the screen.
“That man was supposed to protect my child.””
“And if he was involved, we will investigate.””
Adrian looked back at the image.
The truth was becoming more complicated with every answer.
Vanessa.
Margaret.
Ethan.
Now Nathan.
Too many people had pieces of Caleb’s life.
And somehow, the one person everyone ignored was the child himself.
The next morning, Nathan Reed arrived at the police station.
He walked in wearing a gray suit and carrying a leather folder.
Calm.
Professional.
Exactly the way Adrian remembered him.
And that made him even more angry.
Because people who hurt others rarely looked like villains.
Sometimes they looked like the person everyone trusted.
Nathan saw Adrian sitting in the waiting area.
His expression changed slightly.
“Adrian.””
Adrian stood.
“Dr. Reed.””
The two men stared at each other.
Nathan looked uncomfortable.
“I heard about the footage.””
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
“Funny.””
Nathan frowned.
“Why?””
“Because you were there.””
A pause.
Nathan looked away.
Just for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
“You were in my backyard.””
“I was concerned about Caleb.””
“You were watching him.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then explain.””
Nathan remained silent.
Officer Ramirez stepped out.
“Dr. Reed, we’ll speak in the interview room.””
Nathan nodded.
But before he walked away, he looked at Adrian.
“I never wanted Caleb hurt.””
Adrian stared.
“That’s an interesting thing to say.””
“What?””
“I didn’t ask if you wanted him hurt.””
Nathan said nothing.
Because Adrian had noticed something.
Every person connected to this situation kept saying the same thing.
They didn’t want to hurt Caleb.
But Caleb was hurt anyway.
Inside the interview room, Nathan sat across from Officer Ramirez.
Adrian watched through the glass.
“What did he say?”” Adrian asked.
The officer answered.
“He admitted he was at the house.””
“Why?””
“He said Vanessa called him.””
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Of course she did.
“About what?””
“He said she was having trouble controlling the situation.””
Adrian looked confused.
“Controlling what?””
Officer Ramirez watched the interview.
“That’s what we’re asking.””
Nathan’s hands moved nervously.
A small crack in his calm appearance.
Then he said something that changed everything.
“I was trying to help Vanessa leave.””
Adrian felt a chill.
“Leave?””
The officer leaned forward.
“Leave Adrian?””
Nathan nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nathan looked down.
“Because Vanessa told me Adrian was dangerous.””
The room went silent.
Adrian stared.
Dangerous.
The word felt impossible.
He had spent five years protecting his son.
Working.
Providing.
Being there.
Now someone was claiming he was the threat.
“What did she tell you?”” Officer Ramirez asked.
Nathan took a breath.
“She said Adrian was controlling. That he was obsessed with Caleb. That he would never accept losing him.””
Adrian almost laughed.
But there was nothing funny about it.
“She lied.””
Nathan looked up.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“You believe she lied?””
Nathan nodded slowly.
“I do now.””
Officer Ramirez asked:
“Why now?””
Nathan looked through the glass.
At Adrian.
“Because I met Caleb.””
The sentence was quiet.
“But I made a mistake.””
Adrian listened.
“What mistake?””
Nathan looked down.
“I believed Vanessa’s version before I listened to the child.””
That sentence stayed with Adrian.
Because it was exactly what everyone had done.
They listened to adults.
They listened to explanations.
They listened to excuses.
Nobody listened to Caleb.
“What happened in the backyard?”” Officer Ramirez asked.
Nathan closed his eyes.
“I was supposed to talk to Vanessa.””
“About?””
“Leaving.””
Adrian’s hands tightened.
“Leaving with Caleb?””
Nathan nodded.
“Yes.””
The room became still.
“You were helping her take my son?””
Nathan immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I thought I was helping a mother escape a bad situation.””
Adrian stared.
“And when did you realize you were wrong?””
Nathan looked broken.
“When I saw Caleb.””
“What about him?””
“He wasn’t afraid of Adrian.””
A pause.
“He was afraid of everyone else.””
Those words hit Adrian harder than he expected.
Because they were true.
Nathan continued.
“I saw him sitting there.””
“In the doghouse?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“I knew something wasn’t right.””
“Why didn’t you stop it?””
Nathan looked away.
The guilt was obvious.
“Because I had already decided what I believed.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s not an answer.””
“No.””
Nathan swallowed.
“It’s the truth.””
Later that afternoon, Adrian returned home.
Caleb was drawing at the kitchen table.
When Adrian walked in, the boy looked up.
“Daddy.””
Adrian smiled.
“Hey, buddy.””
Caleb looked at his face.
“Are you sad?””
Adrian sat beside him.
“A little.””
“Because of me?””
Adrian immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“Because I’m not…”
He stopped.
He couldn’t finish the sentence.
Adrian knew what he was about to say.
Not real.
Not enough.
Not his.
Adrian took the drawing paper.
“What are you making?””
Caleb looked down.
“A family picture.””
Adrian looked.
There were four people this time.
Adrian.
Caleb.
Vanessa.
And another person.
“Who is that?””
Caleb hesitated.
“Someone Mommy talked about.””
Adrian’s heart tightened.
“Who?””
The boy whispered:
“Uncle Nathan.””
Adrian looked at the picture.
“Why did you draw him?””
Caleb shrugged.
“He said he understood me.””
Adrian paused.
“What did he understand?””
Caleb’s eyes became serious.
“He said sometimes people have to choose the family they really belong with.””
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
“Did he say that to you?””
Caleb nodded.
“When?””
The boy looked toward the stairs.
“Before I went outside.””
Adrian froze.
“Caleb…”
The child hugged his blanket.
“He came that morning.””
Adrian’s breathing changed.
“Did Uncle Nathan tell Mommy to put you there?””
Caleb shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what did he do?””
The boy became quiet.
Then he whispered:
“He told Mommy she needed to make Daddy believe I didn’t love him.””
Adrian felt the room disappear.
“What?””
Caleb looked scared.
“He said if Daddy thought I didn’t want him anymore…”
The boy’s voice trembled.
“He would leave by himself.””
Adrian stood slowly.
Because now the entire plan made sense.
They didn’t want to prove Adrian wasn’t Caleb’s father.
They wanted Adrian to believe he wasn’t wanted.
They wanted him to walk away.
But there was one thing nobody had expected.
Caleb still loved him.
That evening, Officer Ramirez called again.
This time, his voice was urgent.
“Adrian, we found something on Nathan Reed’s computer.””
“What?””
“A file.””
“About Caleb?””
A pause.
“Yes.””
Adrian waited.
“What kind of file?””
The officer answered carefully.
“A plan.””
Adrian’s heart sank.
“What plan?””
The officer looked at the documents.
“A plan describing exactly how to separate a child from his father.””
Adrian went silent.
Then the officer added one more thing.
“The file wasn’t created by Nathan.””
Adrian frowned.
“Then who created it?””
The answer came slowly.
May you like
And it was the last person Adrian expected.
“Vanessa Miller.””
