Thinking

Chapter 5: The Man Who Knew the Truth

The photograph felt heavier than paper.

Adrian Miller held it between his fingers, staring at the stranger’s face.

A man with dark hair.

A serious expression.

Someone who looked ordinary.

But ordinary people didn’t appear in hidden files connected to the biggest secret of someone’s life.

“Who is he?”” Adrian asked.

Officer Ramirez sat across from him.

“His name is Ethan Cole.””

The name meant nothing.

And somehow, that made it worse.

Adrian looked back at the photograph.

“Was he involved with Vanessa?””

“We don’t know yet.””

“But he was at our house.””

“According to the records, yes.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“When?””

“Two days before Caleb was born.””

The room felt smaller.

For five years, Adrian had believed he knew the story of his own family.

He remembered that week.

The hospital visits.

The fear.

The excitement.

The moment he first held Caleb.

He remembered Vanessa crying when the doctor placed their baby in her arms.

He remembered thinking he had never been happier.

Now every memory had a shadow.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me about him?”” Adrian asked.

Officer Ramirez looked at the file.

“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””

Adrian flipped through the documents.

There were old phone records.

A visitor log.

A handwritten note.

One sentence caught his attention.

*Ethan believes the child may be his.*

Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.

“He knew?””

Officer Ramirez nodded.

“It appears so.””

“So Vanessa knew too.””

“We need to confirm the timeline.””

Adrian stood.

“No.””

The officer looked at him.

“No?””

“I don’t need a timeline to know someone lied to me.””

His voice wasn’t loud.

It didn’t need to be.

The pain underneath it was enough.

That evening, Adrian returned home later than usual.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that came after something broke and everyone was pretending the pieces were still together.

He found Caleb sitting on the living room floor, building a tower with wooden blocks.

When Caleb saw him, his face immediately changed.

“Daddy.””

Adrian smiled softly.

“Hey, buddy.””

Caleb looked at him carefully.

“Are you leaving?””

Adrian sat down beside him.

“No.””

“Promise?””

Adrian nodded.

“I promise.””

Caleb pushed a block onto the tower.

“Even if I’m not your real son?””

Adrian felt the pain return.

He took the block from Caleb’s hand.

“Listen to me.””

The boy looked up.

“You are my son.””

“But Grandma said—”

“I know what Grandma said.””

Adrian paused.

“And Grandma was wrong to make you feel that way.””

Caleb looked down.

“Did I make you sad?””

Adrian shook his head immediately.

“No.””

“Did I ruin things?””

“No.””

“Mommy said…”

Adrian stopped him gently.

“Your job is to be a kid.””

Caleb blinked.

“My job?””

“Yes.””

“What do I do?””

“You play. You laugh. You learn. You make a mess sometimes.””

A tiny smile appeared.

“I make lots of messes.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“I know.””

Caleb looked relieved.

For a moment, they were just father and son again.

Then Adrian noticed something.

A small drawing on the floor.

A picture Caleb had made.

There were three people.

A tall man.

A small boy.

And a woman standing far away.

Adrian picked it up.

“Who is this?””

Caleb pointed.

“That’s me.””

“And this is Daddy?””

Caleb nodded.

Adrian pointed to the woman.

“Mommy?””

Caleb became quiet.

“No.””

Adrian looked closer.

“Who is she?””

Caleb whispered.

“Grandma.””

Adrian stared at the drawing.

Margaret was standing away from the family.

Not beside them.

Not holding hands.

Far away.

“Why did you draw Grandma like that?””

Caleb shrugged.

“She doesn’t like hugs.””

The answer was innocent.

But it hurt.

Because children didn’t create distance without a reason.

They learned it.

The next morning, Vanessa asked Adrian to talk privately.

They stood in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where they had celebrated birthdays.

Made pancakes.

Argued over small things.

Now it felt unfamiliar.

“I want to explain,” Vanessa said.

Adrian looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She took a breath.

“Ethan and I knew each other before you.””

“Were you together?””

“No.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Vanessa looked away.

“We were close.””

Adrian waited.

“He found out about the pregnancy.””

“And?””

“He wanted to be involved.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“But he disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I told him to stay away.””

“Why?””

“Because I had chosen you.””

The words should have made him feel something.

But they didn’t.

Not anymore.

“You chose me after knowing there was another possibility.””

“Yes.””

“You chose me because I was convenient.””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I loved you.””

Adrian looked at her.

“I believed you loved me too.””

“I did.””

“Then why did you take away my choice?””

Vanessa had no answer.

That was the worst part.

Later that day, Officer Ramirez called Adrian.

“We found Ethan Cole.””

Adrian immediately stood.

“Where?””

“He’s alive.””

The words shocked him.

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s mind raced.

“But Vanessa said he died.””

There was a pause.

A long one.

“Mr. Miller…”

The officer’s voice became serious.

“We need you to come in.””

Adrian arrived twenty minutes later.

Ethan Cole was sitting in an interview room.

Older than the photograph.

Tired.

His hands were folded on the table.

When Adrian entered, Ethan looked up.

And the expression on his face said everything.

He knew exactly who Adrian was.

“You’re Caleb’s father,” Ethan said.

Adrian stopped.

The sentence bothered him.

Not because it was cruel.

Because Ethan said it like a fact.

“Yes.””

Ethan looked down.

“I always wondered if I would meet you.””

Adrian sat across from him.

“Vanessa told me you died.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“She told you that?””

“Yes.””

He let out a quiet laugh.

Not amused.

Just hurt.

“She told everyone what she needed them to believe.””

Adrian stared.

“What happened?””

Ethan looked through the glass window.

“When Vanessa found out she was pregnant, she was scared.””

“She didn’t tell me.””

“I know.””

“You knew about me?””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“Then why didn’t you come?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because Vanessa asked me not to.””

“And you listened?””

“I thought she was protecting Caleb.””

Adrian leaned forward.

“But she wasn’t.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“She was protecting herself.””

Silence filled the room.

Then Ethan said something Adrian didn’t expect.

“I tried to contact her after Caleb was born.””

“When?””

“Three months later.””

“What happened?””

Ethan looked away.

“She told me Caleb was yours.””

Adrian frowned.

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to.””

Ethan swallowed.

“Then two years ago, I found out the truth.””

Adrian froze.

“How?””

Ethan reached into his jacket and placed a small envelope on the table.

“I received this.””

Adrian opened it.

Inside was a copy of a document.

A DNA test.

The name at the top was Caleb Miller.

The results were clear.

Adrian stared.

His hands shook.

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“I found out I was Caleb’s biological father.””

Adrian looked up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Ethan’s eyes were filled with regret.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

“With what?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then he answered.

“She said if I came near Caleb, she would tell everyone I abandoned him.””

Adrian stared at him.

“And you stayed away?””

“I thought I was protecting him.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly Adrian understood something.

There were many people who had failed Caleb.

Some through cruelty.

Some through fear.

Some through silence.

But the question that mattered most was still unanswered.

Why had Vanessa and Margaret pushed Caleb away?

Why had they wanted Adrian to doubt his own son?

Before Adrian left, Ethan stopped him.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

Adrian turned.

Ethan looked serious.

“The day Caleb was put outside…”

Adrian froze.

“What about it?””

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Vanessa wasn’t trying to punish Caleb.””

A cold feeling moved through Adrian.

“Then what was she trying to do?””

May you like

Ethan looked directly at him.

“She was trying to make you leave.””
