Chapter 6: The Plan Hidden Behind the Pain

Adrian couldn’t move.

Ethan’s words stayed in his mind like a warning alarm.

*She was trying to make you leave.*

Not Caleb.

Not the house.

Him.

For several seconds, Adrian just stood there outside the interview room, staring through the glass window at the man who had spent years away from his own son.

A man who had lost five years.

A man who had been silent.

A man who was still somehow telling Adrian the truth.

“What do you mean?”” Adrian finally asked.

Ethan looked down.

“I mean Vanessa wanted you gone.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed you were the only thing stopping her from controlling everything.””

Adrian’s face tightened.

“Controlling what?””

Ethan sighed.

“Caleb. The money. The house. The image.””

The words sounded impossible.

But after everything Adrian had seen, impossible was becoming familiar.

“You’re saying she planned this?””

“I’m saying she was desperate.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No,” Ethan admitted.

“It’s not.””

Adrian looked away.

He wanted to reject it.

He wanted to say Vanessa couldn’t be that person.

The woman who laughed with him.

The woman who held his hand in the hospital.

The woman who promised they would grow old together.

But then he remembered Caleb sitting alone in a doghouse.

And the way Vanessa had looked at the camera footage.

Not shocked.

Not heartbroken.

Caught.

“What happened two years ago?”” Adrian asked.

Ethan hesitated.

“Two years ago, Vanessa found out I had evidence.””

“What evidence?””

“Proof that I was Caleb’s biological father.””

Adrian stared.

“And that scared her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan leaned back.

“Because if the truth came out, everything would change.””

Adrian’s voice became cold.

“It should have.””

Ethan nodded.

“I agree.””

The two men sat in silence.

Two fathers connected by the same child.

But separated by years of secrets.

Finally, Adrian stood.

“Where did you get the DNA test?””

Ethan looked at him.

“From a private clinic.””

“Who ordered it?””

“I did.””

“Without Vanessa knowing?””

“Yes.””

Adrian looked toward the door.

“Why now?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Because I saw the news.””

“What news?””

“About Caleb.””

Adrian froze.

“The story about him being found outside?””

“Yes.””

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“I knew something was wrong.””

Adrian looked at him.

“How?””

“Because Vanessa used to threaten me with one thing.””

“What?””

Ethan’s voice lowered.

“She said if she ever lost control, she would make everyone believe Caleb was the problem.””

Adrian felt anger rising.

“He’s a child.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You don’t understand. He’s not a problem to solve.””

Ethan looked at him.

“I know that better than anyone.””

The words carried pain.

And Adrian believed him.

Not because Ethan was innocent.

But because he saw something familiar.

Regret.

When Adrian returned home, the lights were off.

He found Vanessa sitting alone at the kitchen table.

She looked exhausted.

“You talked to him.””

It wasn’t a question.

Adrian placed the keys on the counter.

“Yes.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I knew this would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“You would hear his side.””

Adrian stared.

“You mean the truth?””

Vanessa looked up.

“Not everything is that simple.””

“No?””

“No.””

She stood.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“You’re right.””

The words surprised her.

“I don’t know what you went through.””

He stepped closer.

“But I know what Caleb went through.””

Vanessa looked away.

“He was scared.””

“He was angry.””

“He was five.””

That stopped her.

Adrian continued.

“He thought you didn’t want him.””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“I never wanted that.””

“Then why did you make him feel it?””

Vanessa sat back down.

“I was overwhelmed.””

“Again with that.””

“Because it’s true.””

Adrian shook his head.

“No. It’s an explanation. Not an excuse.””

The silence between them grew.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Do you hate me?””

Adrian looked at her.

And the hardest part was that he didn’t know the answer.

Because hate would have been easier.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

The sentence hurt her.

But it was honest.

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Can you forgive me?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

Because forgiveness required something he no longer had.

Trust.

The next day, Adrian received a message from Officer Ramirez.

*We found more footage. You need to see this.*

Adrian drove straight to the station.

When he arrived, Officer Ramirez was waiting.

“There’s something you need to understand.””

Adrian looked at the screen.

“What is it?””

“The camera recorded more than we thought.””

The officer pressed play.

The footage showed the backyard again.

But this time, it was from three days before Caleb was found.

Vanessa and Margaret were standing near the patio.

Their voices were clear.

Margaret spoke first.

“She’s becoming suspicious.””

Vanessa looked nervous.

“Adrian?””

“Yes.””

“He keeps asking questions.””

Margaret shook her head.

“Then stop giving him reasons to ask.””

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

The footage continued.

Vanessa sat down.

“I don’t want to hurt Caleb.””

Margaret replied immediately.

“Then stop acting like he matters more than your future.””

Adrian froze.

Margaret continued.

“You need Adrian gone.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“He’s Caleb’s father.””

Margaret’s expression remained cold.

“He believes he is.””

The room became silent.

Adrian stared at the screen.

There it was.

The cruelty.

The plan.

The manipulation.

But then Vanessa said something unexpected.

“I can’t do that.””

Margaret looked at her.

“You already started.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

The older woman stepped closer.

“You let him believe the child was his. You let him build a life around a lie.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I loved him.””

Margaret answered:

“Love makes people weak.””

Adrian looked away.

The footage continued.

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Once Adrian leaves, everything becomes easier.””

“What about Caleb?””

“He’ll adjust.””

Adrian clenched his fists.

No.

Not Caleb.

Never Caleb.

Then the video changed.

A new angle appeared.

The backyard.

The doghouse.

The morning Caleb was found.

Adrian watched as Vanessa walked outside.

But this time, he noticed something.

She wasn’t alone.

Someone else was there.

Standing near the fence.

Watching.

A man.

Adrian leaned closer.

“Who is that?””

Officer Ramirez paused the video.

The image was blurry.

But clear enough.

A tall figure.

A familiar shape.

Then the officer enhanced the frame.

Adrian’s heart dropped.

Because he recognized him.

Not Ethan.

Not a stranger.

Someone else.

Someone who had been in their home many times.

Someone Vanessa trusted.

Officer Ramirez looked at Adrian.

“We’re trying to confirm his identity.””

Adrian couldn’t take his eyes off the screen.

Because the person standing in the backyard that morning…

May you like

was Caleb’s therapist.

Dr. Nathan Reed.
