Chapter 8: The Recording That Changed Everything
Nobody moved.
The recording continued playing.
Static.
Then Claire’s voice again.
“You should have stayed out of my life, Sarah.””
My hands clenched.
Sarah’s voice came next.
“You’re threatening me.””
“I’m warning you.””
“You’re destroying your own family.””
A short laugh.
“You don’t understand. I deserve what you have.””
I looked at Margaret.
She lowered her eyes.
The truth was finally speaking.
Not through accusations.
Not through rumors.
Through the voice of the woman who had been gone for years.
Sarah.
“What do you want from me?””
Claire answered immediately.
“You know what I want.””
“The money?””
“The security.””
“You think David will give you everything?””
“He will when you’re gone.””
The room became ice cold.
Ethan covered his mouth.
I reached over and stopped the recording.
I couldn’t listen anymore.
Not because I didn’t believe it.
Because I did.
And that was worse.
For years, I had defended Claire.
For years, I had told myself she loved Ethan.
That she was part of our family.
But she had entered our lives carrying a secret.
A plan.
A hatred.
“Where did you get this?”” I asked Margaret.
“Sarah gave it to me.””
“Before she died?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
The older woman looked ashamed.
“Because Claire threatened me too.””
My expression changed.
“She knew?””
“She came to my house after Sarah died.””
“What did she say?””
Margaret looked down.
“She told me nobody would believe an old woman over the grieving husband.””
I felt sick.
“She manipulated everyone.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was staring at the floor.
“I’m sorry, Dad.””
I turned toward him.
“For what?””
“For not telling you.””
I sat beside him.
“Ethan, you were nine.””
“But I knew something was wrong.””
“You were a child.””
“I should have protected Mom.””
“No.””
My voice became firm.
“You were not supposed to protect adults.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“You were supposed to be protected.””
For the first time in years, my son let himself cry.
Not the quiet tears he had hidden.
Real tears.
The kind that came from carrying too much for too long.
Margaret waited until he calmed down.
Then she said:
“There’s one more thing you need to know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Claire didn’t just want the house.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“She wanted control of your father’s company.””
I frowned.
“My father’s company?””
“Yes.””
“But she wasn’t involved in the business.””
Margaret looked at me.
“Not officially.””
She reached into her bag.
Another document.
I opened it.
My father’s signature.
Again.
This time, a partnership agreement.
With Claire listed as a silent investor.
I stared at the page.
“How?””
Margaret sighed.
“Your father was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of being exposed.””
I looked up.
“By Sarah?””
“Yes.””
The betrayal felt endless.
My father.
My wife.
Two people I trusted.
Both hiding things from me.
But one question remained.
“If Claire had all this, why wait?””
Margaret looked at me.
“Because she needed you.””
“Needed me?””
“She needed you to inherit everything.””
I understood.
A marriage.
A house.
A family.
It was all part of a plan.
Claire didn’t just want my father’s money.
She wanted mine.
My phone suddenly rang.
I looked at the screen.
Claire.
Everyone went silent.
I answered.
“Why are you calling?””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Because I know you have the recording.””
My grip tightened.
“How?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Margaret was never as careful as she thought.””
I looked at the woman sitting across from me.
Claire continued.
“David, you need to listen carefully.””
“I’m listening.””
“You think you found the truth.””
“I did.””
“No.””
Her voice became colder.
“You found a story.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Ethan has been lying to you.””
My eyes moved toward my son.
Claire continued.
“There’s one thing he never told you.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then she said:
“The night Sarah died, Ethan wasn’t upstairs.””
My blood ran cold.
“He was in the car.””
The room disappeared.
I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.
“That’s impossible.””
“Ask him.””
I looked at Ethan.
He looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not angry.
Terrified.
Claire whispered:
“Ask your son what really happened after he heard the crash.””
Then she hung up.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, I turned toward Ethan.
“Is it true?””
He closed his eyes.
May you like
And slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
