Thinking

Chapter 14: The Last Lie

I knew I shouldn’t have gone alone.

Every warning in my head told me that.

Detective Harris told me.

My attorney told me.

Ethan told me.

But after eight years of lies, I needed answers.

The location was an abandoned warehouse outside the city.

A place where people went when they didn’t want to be found.

I parked my car.

For a moment, I stayed inside.

Thinking.

Then I saw him.

Robert.

Standing near the entrance.

I stepped out.

“You.””

He looked exhausted.

“I knew you would come.””

I kept my distance.

“You helped her escape.””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than a lie.

“Why?””

“Because I owed her.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You owed her?””

Robert looked at me.

“You don’t know everything.””

“Everyone says that.””

I stepped closer.

“I’m tired of hearing that.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice rose.

“My wife died. My father betrayed me. My son carried trauma for years. And everyone keeps saying they understand.””

Robert looked down.

“I was a coward.””

“Yes.””

“I know.””

He reached into his jacket.

I immediately stepped back.

“Relax.””

He pulled out an envelope.

“I saved this.””

“What is it?””

“Insurance.””

I took it.

Inside was a handwritten note.

From Claire.

My blood ran cold.

“How did you get this?””

“After your father died, Claire gave it to me.””

“Why?””

“Because she thought I was loyal.””

I opened it.

The message was short.

If anything happens, Robert knows what to do.

I looked up.

“She planned everything.””

Robert nodded.

“But there’s more.””

He looked toward the road.

“She wasn’t leaving because she was scared.””

“Then why?””

“Because she was preparing.””

“For what?””

He hesitated.

“Taking Ethan.””

My blood froze.

“What?””

Robert looked at me.

“She knows Ethan is the only person who can connect her to Sarah’s death.””

“She wants to silence him.””

“Yes.””

My phone rang.

Detective Harris.

I answered.

“Where are you?””

I hesitated.

Then:

“With Robert.””

Silence.

“David, leave immediately.””

“Why?””

“Because we tracked Claire’s movements.””

My stomach tightened.

“She isn’t out of the country.””

“What?””

“She never got on the plane.””

I looked around.

“Where is she?””

The detective’s voice became urgent.

“She’s nearby.””

My blood ran cold.

A sound came from behind the warehouse.

A door opening.

Robert turned.

His face changed.

“No.””

I looked.

Claire stepped into the light.

She wasn’t running.

She wasn’t afraid.

She was calm.

“You always were too trusting, David.””

I felt anger.

“You used my son.””

She looked at me.

“I protected myself.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You destroyed everyone around you.””

Her face hardened.

“You think Sarah was innocent?””

I stared at her.

“Don’t.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“You never knew the truth about your perfect wife.””

I said nothing.

“Sarah was going to leave you.””

A pause.

“She had someone else.””

I almost laughed.

“Another lie?””

Claire smiled.

“Ask Ethan.””

My heart sank.

Again.

Always Ethan.

“You’re still trying to hurt him.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m trying to make you see.””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a document.

“What is that?””

“Something Sarah signed.””

I didn’t take it.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because this time, it’s real.””

She threw it toward me.

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the page.

A divorce agreement.

Unsigned.

A draft.

Nothing more.

“She considered leaving.””

I looked at Claire.

“She considered it.””

“Yes.””

“Because of you.””

Her smile disappeared.

“You really think everything was my fault?””

I stepped closer.

“Yes.””

For the first time, Claire looked wounded.

Then her expression changed.

Cold again.

“Fine.””

She looked toward the warehouse entrance.

“Bring him out.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

A figure stepped forward.

A young man.

I didn’t recognize him.

Then Claire spoke.

“Your son’s old friend.””

The young man looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I frowned.

“Who are you?””

He looked at Ethan’s name on his phone.

Then at me.

“I’m the person who was there the night Sarah died.””

My blood ran cold.

Another witness.

Another secret.

Claire smiled.

“Now you’ll finally know.””

The young man took a breath.

“I saw what happened.””

I stepped forward.

“What happened?””

He looked terrified.

Then said:

“Sarah wasn’t killed by Claire.””

May you like

The world stopped.

“She was killed by someone else.””
