Chapter 6: The House That Was Never Hers
For eight years, I believed the house belonged to my family.
I believed it was the one thing nobody could take from us.
But now I was sitting in my office, staring at documents that suggested I had been wrong.
“The house was transferred into a separate trust,” my attorney explained.
I looked at the papers.
“Why?””
“We’re still trying to determine that.””
“Who controls it?””
A pause.
Then:
“Claire.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t move.
“She controls the house?””
“Technically, yes.””
My mind went back to every argument.
Every time Claire said things like:
“This is my home too.””
Every time she acted like Ethan was a guest.
She knew.
She had always known.
“Why would my father do that?””
My attorney sighed.
“I don’t know.””
I looked out the window.
“Find out.””
After the call ended, I sat there for a long time.
Then I went home.
Ethan was waiting.
He could tell something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I sat across from him.
“I found out something about the house.””
His expression changed.
“Are we losing it?””
I hated that his first thought was fear.
“No.””
“Dad…”
“I said no.””
I took a breath.
“But Claire knew something about it.””
“What?””
“She knew the house was connected to my father’s estate.””
Ethan looked confused.
“Why does that matter?””
“Because she may have been trying to get you out because of this.””
He looked down.
“So it really was never about me.””
“No.””
I felt anger rising.
“It was never about you.””
The next day, I went to confront Claire.
She opened the door with a calm expression.
Like she had been expecting me.
“I knew you’d come.””
I looked at her.
“Give me one reason I shouldn’t call the police and report what you’ve done.””
She smiled sadly.
“Because you don’t know the whole story.””
“I know enough.””
“No, David.””
She stepped outside and closed the door behind her.
“You know what Rachel wants you to believe.””
“And what do you want me to believe?””
“That your father loved me.””
I stared at her.
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It does.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Because my father’s choices don’t excuse yours.””
Her face hardened.
“You think I’m the villain.””
“You manipulated my son.””
“You think Ethan is innocent?””
The question stopped me.
Not because I believed her.
Because I knew she was about to reveal something.
“You keep saying that,” I said.
“Because it’s true.””
“Then prove it.””
Claire looked toward the house.
Then back at me.
“Ask Ethan about the night your father came to our house.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
She smiled.
“You thought Sarah died because of a random accident.””
I said nothing.
“She didn’t.””
The world seemed to slow down.
“What are you saying?””
Claire stepped closer.
“I’m saying Ethan knows more than he told you.””
I felt anger.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She lowered her voice.
“Ask him why he was the last person to see Sarah alive.””
I froze.
Because that was impossible.
Ethan was nine.
He had been at a neighbor’s house.
That was what I had been told.
That was what everyone had told me.
Claire watched my reaction carefully.
Then whispered:
“Your son has been protecting someone all these years.””
I wanted to walk away.
I wanted to call her a liar.
But a small part of me remembered Ethan’s face when I asked about that night.
The fear.
The hesitation.
The words:
“I don’t remember everything.””
I returned home feeling like the ground beneath me had cracked open.
Ethan was in the living room.
He looked up.
“Dad?””
I closed the door behind me.
“Ethan.””
His face changed.
“What?””
I sat down.
“I need you to tell me the truth.””
His breathing became uneven.
“About what?””
“The night Mom died.””
He looked away.
And that was when I knew.
Claire had been right about one thing.
Ethan was hiding something.
But I still didn’t know why.
Then he whispered:
“Dad…”
His voice broke.
“There’s something I never told you.””
And before he could continue, someone knocked on the front door.
Ethan went completely pale.
Because he recognized the person standing outside.
May you like
It was someone I had never expected to see again.
Someone who should have been gone from our lives forever.
