Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Promise
I didn't sleep.
Not even for a minute.
I sat in my home office until sunrise, staring at old photographs.
Angela smiling at Maya's first birthday.
Angela holding Maya's hand on her first day of school.
Angela standing beside me before everything changed.
I had spent years protecting Maya from losing her mother twice.
First to death.
Then to memory.
But now Denise had opened a door I had locked long ago.
And behind it was a question I never thought I would ask.
What really happened before Angela died?
At seven in the morning, Maya walked into the kitchen.
She looked exhausted.
Like she had slept even less than I had.
"Morning, Dad.""
I forced a smile.
"Morning, sweetheart.""
She poured cereal into a bowl.
The same cereal she always ate.
The cheapest one in the pantry.
I watched her.
"Maya.""
She looked up.
"Yeah?""
"Did Denise ever talk to you about your mom?""
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"Why?""
"Just answer me.""
She put the spoon down.
"Sometimes.""
"What did she say?""
Maya hesitated.
"That your mom was complicated.""
My chest tightened.
"Complicated?""
She nodded.
"She said you and Mom fought a lot.""
I stared at her.
"Did she say anything else?""
Maya looked uncomfortable.
"She said your mom wasn't always the person you remember.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
Because Denise knew Angela for less than a year.
I knew her for twelve.
Before I could ask more, Denise entered the kitchen.
She stopped when she saw us.
Her eyes moved between us.
"What are you talking about?""
I didn't answer immediately.
I wanted to hear if she would tell the truth without knowing what I knew.
"Your conversation with Tasha last night.""
Her face changed.
Just for a second.
Then she recovered.
"You were listening?""
"I heard enough.""
Denise sighed.
"Marcus.""
"No.""
I stood.
"Not today.""
She stared at me.
"You don't want to do this.""
"Do what?""
"Dig up old wounds.""
I stepped closer.
"You brought up my dead wife's name.""
Her expression hardened.
"Because you don't know everything.""
"Then tell me.""
Silence.
"Tell me what happened.""
Denise looked away.
That was the moment I knew.
There was something.
Something she had kept from me.
Something she had used.
"I met Angela before she died," Denise finally said.
I frowned.
"What?""
She looked surprised.
"You didn't know?""
"No.""
She swallowed.
"She came to my workplace once.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
"She wanted to talk.""
"About what?""
Denise didn't answer.
I felt my heart pounding.
"Denise.""
She looked at me.
"She was worried about you.""
I almost laughed.
Because that sounded impossible.
"Angela was dying. Why would she be worried about me?""
"Because she thought you were carrying too much.""
The room became quiet.
For a moment, I wondered if I was angry for the wrong reason.
Then Denise continued.
"She told me she was afraid Maya would grow up believing she wasn't enough.""
My stomach dropped.
Those words.
Those exact words.
Because they were the words Angela said to me before she died.
Take care of her.
Make sure she knows she is enough.
I looked at Denise.
"How did you know that?""
She didn't answer.
And that scared me.
Before I could push further, Maya walked in holding her backpack.
"I forgot my math book.""
She stopped.
She felt the tension immediately.
Kids always do.
Especially kids who grow up around secrets.
I softened my voice.
"Go ahead, sweetheart.""
She grabbed the book.
But before she left, Denise said something.
Something that made Maya freeze.
"Your mother knew she wasn't perfect.""
Maya slowly turned around.
I stepped between them.
"Don't.""
Denise looked at me.
"I'm just saying the truth.""
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"But you're saying it to a child who lost her mother.""
Maya looked at both of us.
Then she whispered:
"What did Mom do?""
Nobody answered.
And that was the worst answer possible.
Because silence can create a thousand fears.
Maya left.
I watched her go upstairs.
Then I turned back to Denise.
"What are you hiding?""
She sat down.
For the first time since yesterday, she looked tired.
Not angry.
Not defensive.
Tired.
"You really want to know?""
"Yes.""
She looked at the old family photo on the counter.
The one with Angela, me, and Maya.
Then she said:
"Before Angela died, she asked me to promise something.""
My entire body went still.
"What?""
Denise looked directly at me.
"She asked me to take care of Maya.""
The words hit me.
Because that was impossible.
Angela never told me she knew Denise.
Never told me they spoke.
Never told me anything.
"Why would she ask you?""
Denise's eyes filled slightly.
"Because she knew something about you that you didn't know.""
I stared.
"What?""
She took a breath.
Then she reached into the kitchen drawer.
And pulled out a small envelope.
Yellowed.
Old.
My name was written on the front.
My hands went cold.
Because I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Angela's.
Denise placed it on the table.
"I was never supposed to give this to you.""
I looked at the envelope.
"Why?""
She whispered:
"Because Angela said if you ever found out the truth, it would destroy the way you saw your entire marriage.""
I reached for it.
My fingers touched the paper.
And before I opened it, I noticed one thing.
The date written in the corner.
It was three days before Angela died.
May you like
And the last person she had written about wasn't me.
It was Denise.
