Chapter 14: The Person Who Chose Silence

I drove home faster than I ever had.

Not recklessly.

Not dangerously.

Just with a desperate need to see the evidence myself.

Because somewhere in my mind, I was still hoping this was another misunderstanding.

Another missing piece.

Another explanation that would make everything simple again.

But simplicity had left my life years ago.

When I entered the house, Denise was sitting at the dining table.

The same table where our marriage had started breaking apart.

Now covered with documents.

Receipts.

Bank statements.

Old records.

Maya was there too.

And so was Claire.

I stopped.

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

Because Claire looked at me.

And I saw something familiar.

The same eyes as Angela.

Not exactly.

But enough.

She looked nervous.

Like she wasn't sure she belonged.

I understood that feeling.

Because Maya had felt the same way.

"Marcus," Denise said softly.

I nodded.

Then I looked at Claire.

"I'm sorry.""

Her eyebrows pulled together.

"For what?""

"For not knowing.""

She looked down.

"That's not your fault.""

The fact that she said that almost broke me.

Because she was a stranger.

And she was already kinder to me than I had been to myself.

I sat down.

"What did you find?""

Denise pushed the documents toward me.

"The account was created eighteen years ago.""

I looked.

"That was before Maya was born.""

She nodded.

"The payments to Rachel started after Claire was born.""

I looked through the records.

Everything was there.

Dates.

Amounts.

Transfers.

And the authorization.

My signature.

But something was wrong.

I studied it.

Then I noticed.

The signature was close.

Very close.

But not mine.

The curve on the M was different.

The ending stroke was wrong.

"This is forged.""

Everyone looked at me.

"I never signed this.""

Denise nodded.

"I thought so.""

I looked at Claire.

"Did your mother know?""

She shook her head.

"She always said someone was helping us.""

"Who?""

"She didn't know.""

I stood.

"Rachel is alive?""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

"Where?""

She looked uncomfortable.

"She doesn't want to meet you.""

That hurt.

But I understood.

After eighteen years of secrets, trust didn't appear overnight.

"What about Ethan?""

Denise looked away.

"He knows.""

I turned.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"He knows who did this.""

My anger returned.

"Then why hasn't he told me?""

Before anyone answered, my phone rang.

Ethan.

I answered immediately.

"Tell me.""

Silence.

Then:

"You found the records.""

"Yes.""

Another pause.

"I hoped you wouldn't have to.""

"Who?""

Ethan sighed.

"Marcus...""

"Who?""

His voice dropped.

"Your mother.""

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had been pulled out of my lungs.

"My mother?""

"She knew about Claire.""

"No.""

"She found out before Angela.""

"Why?""

"Because your father told her.""

I gripped the phone.

"And she hid it?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Ethan's answer came quietly.

"Because she thought she was protecting you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone says that.""

"I know.""

"No. She destroyed everything.""

Ethan didn't argue.

"She was scared.""

"Of what?""

"That you would leave.""

I frowned.

"Leave who?""

"Your marriage.""

I froze.

Ethan continued.

"Your mother believed if you knew about Claire, you would spend your life trying to fix the past.""

"And?""

"And she thought Angela couldn't survive another emotional burden.""

I closed my eyes.

"She decided for everyone.""

"Yes.""

I looked at Maya.

Then Claire.

Two daughters.

Two lives affected by one person's choice.

"Where is my mother?""

Ethan was quiet.

"Marcus.""

"Where?""

"She wants to talk.""

I found my mother sitting alone in her house.

Older.

Smaller.

Nothing like the woman who raised me.

When she opened the door, she immediately started crying.

"You know.""

I stepped inside.

"Yes.""

She closed her eyes.

"I knew this day would come.""

I looked around.

The house was full of memories.

My childhood.

My father's things.

My past.

"Why?""

She sat down.

"Because I was afraid.""

"That's not enough.""

"I know.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

For the first time, my mother didn't try to justify herself.

"I found out about Claire after your father died.""

"How?""

"Rachel contacted me.""

"Why you?""

"Because she knew I loved you.""

I laughed softly.

"And you thought hiding my daughter proved that?""

"No.""

She cried.

"I thought I was saving you.""

"Saving me from what?""

She looked at me.

"From becoming your father.""

That stopped me.

"What?""

"Your father spent his whole life trying to fix mistakes he couldn't undo.""

She wiped her eyes.

"I watched him destroy himself.""

I stared.

"And you thought I would do the same.""

"Yes.""

The honesty hurt.

"But you didn't understand something.""

I stepped closer.

"You took away my choice.""

She looked down.

"I know.""

"You took away Claire's father.""

A tear fell.

"I know.""

"You took away Angela's chance to tell me.""

"I know.""

"And you took away Maya's chance to grow up in a family where nobody was hiding.""

My mother's face collapsed.

"I know.""

The room was silent.

Then she reached into a drawer.

She pulled out a small box.

"I kept this.""

"What is it?""

She handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

My father.

Rachel.

A baby.

Claire.

And on the back, a note.

Written by my father.

"Marcus deserves the truth when he is ready.""

I closed my eyes.

Because everyone had been waiting for me to be ready.

But nobody asked whether I was ready to lose nine years.

I stood.

"I need to go.""

My mother grabbed my hand.

"Marcus.""

I looked back.

"I'm sorry.""

I nodded.

"I believe you are.""

Then I left.

Because forgiveness was possible.

But pretending nothing happened wasn't.

When I returned home, Maya was waiting.

She looked at me.

"Did you find out?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Are you angry?""

I thought about it.

"Yes.""

She looked down.

"At everyone?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

I looked at both my daughters.

"At the years we lost.""

And then Maya did something I didn't expect.

She walked over.

And hugged Claire.

A sister she had met less than a day ago.

A sister who represented another secret.

Another wound.

But maybe...

another chance.

Then Claire's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face changed.

"What?""

She looked at me.

"My mom found something.""

"What?""

Claire looked terrified.

"She said the person who forged your signature wasn't your mother.""

I stepped closer.

"Then who was it?""

Claire looked at the screen.

May you like

And whispered:

"It was someone still living in this house.""
