Chapter 11: The Promise That Became a Lie

I waited until morning to confront Denise.

Not because I wanted to be calm.

Because I didn't trust myself angry.

When she walked into the kitchen, she immediately knew something was wrong.

"What happened?""

I placed the letter on the table.

Her face changed.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough for me to see recognition.

"You know Rachel?""

Silence.

"Denise.""

She sat down slowly.

"I was hoping you would never find that.""

My chest tightened.

"Find what?""

She looked at the letter.

"The truth.""

I laughed quietly.

"The truth seems to be something everyone knows except me.""

She looked hurt.

"Marcus—"

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I need answers.""

She nodded.

"I know.""

"How long did you know about Claire?""

Denise looked down.

"I found out after Angela.""

My jaw tightened.

"After?""

"Yes.""

"Then why does Rachel's letter mention you?""

Her eyes closed.

Because she knew she couldn't avoid it.

"I met Rachel.""

"When?""

"Years ago.""

I stared.

"Before Angela?""

She nodded.

"Before I met you.""

My mind struggled to connect everything.

"Why?""

"Because Rachel needed someone to help her.""

"Help her with what?""

Denise looked at me.

"Claire.""

The name sounded different now.

Real.

A person.

A daughter somewhere in the world who didn't know I existed.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

She swallowed.

"Because Angela asked me not to.""

I froze.

"Angela?""

"Yes.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Marcus.""

"No.""

I stood.

"Angela knew about Claire and didn't tell me?""

Denise's eyes filled.

"She tried.""

"What?""

"She wanted to tell you.""

"Then why didn't she?""

"Because she was afraid.""

"Of what?""

Denise whispered:

"Of losing you.""

I stared at her.

"Why would she think that?""

"Because she believed if you found out, you would spend the rest of your life trying to fix everything.""

I looked away.

Because she knew me.

She knew exactly what I would do.

I would search for Claire.

I would try to make up for lost years.

I would carry another person's pain.

Like I always did.

"But that doesn't explain you.""

Denise nodded.

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

"It doesn't.""

She wiped her face.

"I failed you.""

I waited.

"I failed Maya.""

She looked toward the staircase.

"And I failed Angela's last request.""

"What was her request?""

Denise looked at me.

"She told me to protect Maya from becoming invisible.""

The words hurt.

Because Denise knew.

She knew the exact wound.

And still she allowed it.

"I don't understand.""

"I thought I could handle everything.""

She shook her head.

"But then you started treating Tasha and Lily like they were your own.""

I frowned.

"That was wrong?""

"No.""

She cried quietly.

"That was beautiful.""

"Then what happened?""

"I started comparing.""

"Comparing what?""

"My daughters had their biological father.""

She looked at me.

"Maya had you.""

I stared.

"That's what this was about?""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"It started that way.""

Her voice broke.

"Then it became something uglier.""

"What?""

"Resentment.""

The honesty was painful.

"But not toward Maya.""

She looked down.

"Toward Angela.""

I didn't speak.

"Every time I saw you love Maya, I saw proof that Angela would always be the most important woman in your heart.""

I stared at her.

"Denise.""

"I know.""

She nodded.

"It was unfair.""

A long silence followed.

Then I asked the question I needed answered.

"Did you know where Claire is?""

Denise hesitated.

And that hesitation answered before her words did.

"You do.""

She whispered:

"Yes.""

The room went cold.

"Where?""

"I can't tell you.""

I stared.

"What?""

"Because I promised.""

"To who?""

Her eyes filled with fear.

"Claire's mother.""

I stepped back.

"Rachel?""

She nodded.

"Why?""

"Because Claire doesn't know.""

"Doesn't know what?""

Denise looked at me.

"That you exist.""

I felt something crack inside me.

A daughter.

A person.

Someone who had lived sixteen years without knowing her father.

And I was standing there arguing about secrets.

"How old is she?""

Denise whispered:

"Sixteen.""

I closed my eyes.

Sixteen.

The same age as Maya.

Two daughters.

Same age.

Two completely different lives.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A girl's voice came through.

"Is this Marcus?""

My heart stopped.

"Yes.""

Silence.

Then:

"My name is Claire.""

I couldn't breathe.

Behind me, Denise covered her mouth.

May you like

And the girl said the words that changed everything.

"I think you're my father.""
