The Condo She Tried To Steal / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Truth Behind The Perfect Family

The police report was filed before sunset.

Marcus insisted.

I argued.

Not because I didn’t believe him.

Because part of me still wanted this to be a misunderstanding.

A terrible mistake.

A family conflict that had gone too far.

But the note destroyed that hope.

Someone had threatened me.

Someone had broken into my home.

Someone had taken the things that connected me to Richard.

This was no longer about a condo.

It was about control.

The next morning, Marcus arrived at my hotel with coffee and a folder.

“You didn’t sleep.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at him.

“Neither did you.””

He smiled slightly.

“Fair enough.””

I took the folder.

“What’s inside?””

“Information about Evan Cross.””

I opened it.

His background was surprisingly ordinary.

Too ordinary.

A few real estate jobs.

A few consulting companies.

A few addresses.

Nothing that explained why someone like him would risk committing fraud.

Then I saw the photograph.

A younger Evan.

Standing beside Harper.

My stomach dropped.

“When was this taken?””

“Seven years ago.””

Before Harper married Caleb.

I looked at Marcus.

“She knew him before?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“That’s what we’re investigating.””

I felt something shift inside me.

The story I thought I knew was changing.

Harper wasn’t just a selfish daughter-in-law.

She had a history.

A hidden one.

My phone rang.

Caleb.

I stared at the screen.

Marcus watched me.

“You don’t have to answer.””

I did anyway.

“Hello.””

“Mom.””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.””

“About what?””

“About Harper.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where are you?””

“Outside your hotel.””

I looked through the window.

A few seconds later, I saw him standing near the entrance.

Alone.

I almost didn’t go downstairs.

Almost.

But I did.

When I stepped outside, Caleb looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like the last few days had aged him.

“Mom.””

I didn’t hug him.

I couldn’t.

“What do you want?””

He swallowed.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

“Finally.””

The word hurt him.

Good.

It needed to.

“I knew Harper was looking into the condo.””

I stared at him.

“How long?””

“Months.””

“Months?””

“I thought she was trying to convince you to move closer to us.””

“And the fake papers?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“I swear.””

I studied his face.

For the first time, I wondered how much of my son I actually knew.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

He looked down.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I was losing everything.””

His voice cracked.

“My business was failing. I was scared. Harper said if we had security, everything would be okay.””

“Security?””

He nodded.

“She made it sound like you were going to help us anyway.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“I spent my entire life helping you.””

“I know.””

“And you were waiting for more?””

His eyes filled.

“No.””

But he didn’t sound certain.

I looked away.

“Caleb, when your wife told me to leave, you didn’t even ask if I was okay.””

“I know.””

“You let me walk out.””

“I know.””

He wiped his face.

“I was wrong.””

Maybe he was.

But being wrong didn’t erase what happened.

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed.

Marcus.

I answered.

“What happened?””

“Eleanor, I need you to come back.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then:

“We found the person who accessed your records.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Someone inside your family.””

I looked at Caleb.

He saw my expression.

“What is it?””

I didn’t answer.

Because at that moment, I realized something.

The person who betrayed me wasn’t only trying to steal my home.

They were trying to destroy the relationship between me and my son.

And they had gotten closer than anyone understood.

When I arrived back at the condo, Marcus was standing beside the dining table.

There was a laptop open.

A stack of printed emails.

And one final document.

“Eleanor,” he said.

“What did you find?””

He looked at Caleb.

Then at me.

“The person who accessed your financial information wasn’t Harper.””

The room went silent.

I felt my heart stop.

“Then who?””

Marcus slowly turned the laptop toward me.

On the screen was an email chain.

And the sender’s name appeared at the top.

May you like

A name I never expected to see.

Richard Bennett.
